This is the official mailing list for all news, updates, resources and announcements related to SistaCare, a self-care and community-building group open to all undergraduate and graduate Black/Africana women (e.g. trans, cis) and femmes, regardless of their gender expression.

This Listserv will be composed of primarily staff and faculty partners, as well as select student and alumni leaders that facilitate outreach across campus on behalf of our shared work at i3b.
Space Usage and Sign-In Process
We are delighted to see our spaces being used by students to study, connect, pray, meditate, and build community. In order to keep up with who is using our spaces, we are moving from paper sign-in sheets to UMBC ID card readers. Just like other events and programs on campus, UMBC ID cards will be scanned at entry for The Mosaic and Pride Centers, and The Gathering Space for Spiritual Well-Being. Collecting student and visitor data will support our assessment practices, and help us make funding decisions regarding supplies, prayer space and other needs. All data collected will be maintained confidentially within the UMBC Rex system. If a student or guest does not have a UMBC ID card, paper sign-in sheets will be available.
UMBC COVID Protocols and i3b Spaces
We will have surgical masks available in all three i3b spaces and expect that all students, staff, and visitors wear their masks for the entirety of their visit unless they are actively eating or drinking. In order to keep all students and staff comfortable and as safe as possible, please remember that proper mask-wearing is required at all times. Those not in compliance will be asked to leave.

Interact Dialogues – September 5 – October 18, 2021
TheInteract Dialogues Program, is an experience designed for first year and transfer students to learn and practice skills to become inclusive leaders and engaged community members. Each dialogue group is facilitated by Resident Assistants and past Interact participants. You will meet in-person small groups for a short, weekly session to learn foundational dialogues skills, and to practice empathetic and generous listening, cross-cultural storytelling, and critical self-reflection. Participating in Interact also makes you eligible to apply for our IDEAL internship peer facilitators program! For more information or to sign up, email us atinteract@umbc.edu.

Transitioning into college is not always easy… especially if you are first in your family to attend, if you are a part of a marginalized community, or if you regularly find yourself with more questions than answers. Don’t worry, we are here to help! Initiatives for Identity, Inclusion & Belonging (i3b) has partnered with the Academic Success Center to bring you three sessions that focus on helping you develop the skills and tools you need to experience first year success! Sessions will take place virtually on October 19 and 26 and November 2 from 5:00-6:30 p.m. Not only will we explore academic success skills and principles, we will also explore tools for navigating issues of discrimination, bias and microaggressions within academic spaces, and focus on the many ways our identities are assets within the college environment. To Our Queer and Trancestors: Time Traveling
Pride Month 2021
At Lavender Celebration this year, I shared that every day we create LGBTQ+ futures and that this is a declaration and imagining of new realities. Our very existence is a declaration and a celebration. I want us to spend some time in the past as well - to time travel this Pride Month. Let’s honor the folx who have come before us and added to the imagining of Queer and Trans futures. Our Queer and Trancestors who imagined new time and new realities, who imagined and resisted and fought for new realities. Take the time to honor them, know them and thank them.

To those who lived and loved in time past with the hopes of times to come.

The spirituality of queerness
A force field of
unconditional love
The first flower to bloom in
A post-apocalyptic heart
Our claim to liberation
Is in deciphering
shadows
Queerness is a dance
A choreography between shame and pleasure
I have grown accustomed to their wandering eyes
The essence of my being tickles
Their blushed cheeks
I love unapologetically
In the name of the ancestors who had to love in secret
What does it mean for us to be a good descendant? How can we honor the legacies that have come before us, while paving the way for a time to come? How can we be the time travelers of the imagining and working towards a different time and space? All of these questions are for us to make the time to reflect and honor this Pride Month and beyond. And to remember that we too, in time, will be Queer and Trancestors.
