Retriever Courage Response to "The Retriever" Article

Good afternoon UMBC community,

Please see the response below that Retriever Courage wrote about The Retriever's article in their newest edition. We will share any future updates when they are released. Please refer to the resources and events for Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

Dear Members of the UMBC Community,

As campus leaders working in community to prevent and address discriminatory conduct, including sexual violence and misconduct at UMBC and beyond, we feel compelled to address demeaning content published by The Retriever staff in the paper’s April 1 (April Fools’ Day) edition. While intended as satire, the content has harmed many in our community and may be viewed as creating a hostile environment that accepts and normalizes predatory sexual behavior and sexual assault.

In the context of UMBC’s commitment to inclusive excellence and community actions to create a safer and more caring campus climate for all, we are deeply concerned about discriminatory content presented in any context. The Retriever’s circulation of degrading and humiliating language about women and people who identify as LGBTQ, and its normalization of toxic masculinity, is unacceptable within UMBC’s values.

To build an inclusive community and invite dialogue around these important issues, we have reached out to The Retriever. We will engage them in conversation around the impact of language and satire as it intersects with the experience of sexual violence. We believe in taking action to create space for conversation and learning around these concerns together. In doing so we aim to build mutual understanding with the goal of making our campus community safe, inclusive, and empowering for everyone. We hope to empower others to do the same when it feels safe and appropriate to do so.

We invite all who want to stand against sexual misconduct and sexual violence to make your supportive presence felt during Sexual Assault Awareness Month by joining with us at one or more of these upcoming campus events:

Stand-Up Screening: Cameron Esposito's "Rape Jokes"
Tuesday, April 2, 6 – 8 p.m. in The Commons Sports Zone
To kick off Sexual Assault Awareness Month, the Women's Center and We Believe You are hosting a screening of Cameron Esposito's stand-up routine, “Rape Jokes.” “Rape Jokes” is a stand-up special about sexual assault from a survivor's perspective. Esposito explores how rape jokes have entered mainstream comedy and provides a powerful critique of rape culture. After the viewing, the Women's Center will have a few activities for viewers to process and react to this powerful piece, as well as an opportunity to discuss survivorship, consent, and how mainstream comedy perpetuates rape culture. This event is free but donations to RAINN, the nation's largest anti-sexual violence organization, will be accepted.

The Clothesline Project T-Shirt Making for Survivors and the Clothesline Display on April 8
Throughout all of April, opportunities to make shirts for UMBC's Clothesline Project will be made available in the Women's Center.
A message on behalf of President Hrabowski and Provost Rous

Dear Members of the UMBC Community,

This morning we woke to the tragic news of mass shootings at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. The attack, which was timed to coincide with Friday midday prayers, claimed the lives of 49 people and left 20—including children—seriously injured. Our hearts are with the victims, their families, the first responders who rushed to their aid, the people of Christchurch and New Zealand, and all those who have been affected by this senseless act.

Muslims traditionally gather for prayers at midday on Friday; this is called Jummah, or the Day of Assembly. This deadly violation of a sacred space during Jummah prayers is heartbreaking. New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said this is “one of New Zealand’s darkest days.” We in America are sadly all too familiar with escalating violence and hate targeting community spaces including mosques, synagogues, churches, schools, and campuses. We must answer all hate crimes with a renewed commitment to advancing social justice, deepening our resolve to understand diverse experiences, and honoring the benefits such differences bring to our community and to humanity.

Community members seeking to explore these issues either personally or in community are encouraged to contact the Interfaith Center at 410-455-3657 or the UMBC Counseling Center at 410-455-2472; both will be open regular hours during spring break.

President Freeman Hrabowski and Provost Philip Rous

A learning moment about International Women's Day

<Tagline>Thank you for calling in this past Friday</Tagline>

Posted on behalf of Karina, Mosaic Intern for Hispanic, Latinx, and Indigenous Student Engagement

Dear UMBC Community,

On Friday, March 8, 2019, I created a post regarding International Women's Day, except I used the word "Womyn's." Thanks to a learning moment, initiated by you- UMBC community members who read our Mosaic posts- I now know about the problematic and exclusive history behind this word for trans women. I unknowingly excluded trans women from our International Women's Day celebratory post. Nevertheless, I apologize to all whom I harmed by ignorantly using the word, "womyn."

For all who are unaware of this word's history, this is a brief overview: On July 1975, the Lesbian Connection magazine covered the Wolf Creek Womyn's Festival, run by the Women's Liberation Front. They are typically white, cis-gender, radical feminists who only welcome "females who survived girlhood." This implies that trans women are excluded from their movement, hence the exclusionary meaning in "womyn." To learn more, I encourage you to read the following posts by everydayfeminism and the Boston Globe that explain the complicated history and more recent iterations of related terms.

In any case, it is important in diversity and inclusion work to call-in folk when we intentionally or unintentionally cause harm through insensitive language or actions. In this case, I appreciate all who reached out to us to do so. I personally want to thank you for making the brave decision to call-in and for reading. If you have any further questions regarding this post or any of our LGBTQ+ resources and programming, please email us at mosaic@umbc.edu.

Sincerely,

Let's Talk: Words In Our Vocabulary We Should All Change

<Tagline>Talking about the words that we don't talk about</Tagline>

It’s no secret. We all have said things that we regret and we know were not okay in one way or another. As language changes, we tend to find new words and phrases, society makes them “trendy” and it becomes integrated into our vocabulary. Some antiquated terms that have been around for years though have problematic undertones. Most of this language does not contribute specifically to a better understanding, therefore it can be changed pretty easily. While this list is not exhaustive, here are five terms that you might use everyday and should think about changing.

Alright so I’m gonna start off with an easy one. The word “Retarded”, or abbreviated as “The R Word” is an antiquated term for Mental Retardation which is now called intellectual disabilities. When using the term to say that something is stupid, you are demeaning an entire group of people or making them seem less than. It is the same for saying that things are “gay”, find a new word. There are plenty of other ways to describe something that is annoying or frustrating. If you didn’t know before, you know now.

Let’s talking about a word commonly thrown out to mean “meeting” or “get together”. I’m talking about a “Pow Wow”. You might not think it’s offensive, but it is and it appropriates a part of indigenous culture that is sacred. You end up looking like this gif below:

Start using the word meeting, get together, or check-in. You and your coworker, Jim, meeting up for five minutes to talk about a deadline, is not a Pow Wow. Pow Wow's is an Indigenous ceremony that involves food, and traditions such as singing and dancing. Unless you are being invited to a native Pow Wow, then it's not. We should all stop using it, and encourage each other to change the language as well.

Using Mental Illnesses as a way to express your character or lifestyle is not okay, and should only be used to describe actual challenges that are faced by people affected. Organizing your desk to be productive is not you being OCD. You being upset does not necessarily mean that you are having a panic attack, again, unless you are and you know what a panic attack feels like. Do you catch my drift? They aren’t meant to be words that are dramatized ways to describe what you are feeling and it makes people that actually have challenges facing mental health, seem less legitimate. So let us reframe how we express ourselves and...

Break: Hopefully you are learning something but you also might feel overwhelmed about all these terms and feel guilt. This note is here to tell you that it is okay, and all you need to do is be better in the future and help encourage others to change their language too. You’re here to learn, and that means something. So with that, Let’s Continue!!!

Attention boys and girls, now let’s talk about Gendered Language! (Do you see what I did there?). Using gendered language can exclude a lot of people that do not identify within the binary, meaning man or woman. Using phrases such as “Hey all” can make people feel more at ease. If you have more questions about gender and identity, google the “Genderbread Person” and learn about that cookie. By using this type of language, you are reinforcing a binary culture and people may feel excluded.

This is one that is being spoken about more lately, but please use person of color (P.O.C), not “colored people” when talking about non-white folks. The term colored goes back to racist rhetoric that was used to demean and enforce segregation. Think back to old photos from the 60’s that showed segregated bathrooms, water fountains, waiting rooms and more. So by continuing to use this language, you are perpetuating the harm and othering that people of color have faced throughout their lives. History doesn't erase itself therefore...
