  <Title>Deadline Extended - M.O.S.T. High-impact OER Grant Program</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p>The deadline to submit a proposal for the Maryland Open Source Textbook (M.O.S.T.) initiative <strong><a href="https://usmd.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4ce992e3f6db63c7af9c28afd&amp;id=afe56f4374&amp;e=b59123cf2b" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">2019 High-impact OER Mini-Grant Program</a> has been extended by one week to Friday, March 22, 2019.  </strong>Learn more about the Mini-Grant Program below, <a href="https://usmd.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4ce992e3f6db63c7af9c28afd&amp;id=ef98af7ccd&amp;e=b59123cf2b" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">review the planning document and application questions</a>, and <a href="https://usmd.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4ce992e3f6db63c7af9c28afd&amp;id=c7de63f407&amp;e=b59123cf2b" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">submit a proposal through the online application</a>.<br><br>M.O.S.T. is pleased to announce the call for proposals for the 2019 High-impact OER Mini-Grant Program to strategically support Maryland public higher education institutions’ efforts to increase access, affordability, and achievement for students through the incorporation of open educational resources (OER) into teaching practice.  This year, the Mini-Grant Program will support projects in the following categories:</p><ul><li><strong>Adopt/Adapt OER ($500 - $1,500): </strong>Targets OER adoption in a high enrollment course for which high-quality OER content already exists.</li><li><strong>Scale OER ($1,500 - $2,500):</strong> Targets projects with a vision, plan, and commitment to develop an OER pathway.</li><li><strong><span><em>NEW for 2019! </em></span>Create OER ($1,500 - $2,500):</strong> Targets OER creation in a high-need discipline/meta-discipline to fill gaps in existing OER content.</li></ul><span>Grants will be distributed by the end of FY18-19 for Spring 2019 project planning and development and Fall 2019 OER implementation.  </span><strong>Proposals must be received by 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on Friday, March 22, 2019. </strong><p><a href="https://usmd.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4ce992e3f6db63c7af9c28afd&amp;id=34d172bb4f&amp;e=b59123cf2b" title="Watch a recording of the mini-grant program informational webinar" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Watch a recording</a> of the informational webinar and learn more about the program and previous recipients <a href="https://usmd.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4ce992e3f6db63c7af9c28afd&amp;id=d21e6d7d29&amp;e=b59123cf2b" title="2018 M.O.S.T.   <Title>Kirwan Center to Submit Proposal for Federal OER Grant</Title>

    <div class="html-content">The USM Kirwan Center for Academic Innovation is planning to submit a proposal to the Department of Education’s Applications for New Awards; Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education – Open Textbooks Pilot Program as part of the Maryland Open Source Textbook (M.O.S.T.) initiative <a href="http://www.usmd.edu/cai/MOST" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">http://www.usmd.edu/cai/MOST</a><span>. </span><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>As the </span><span><a href="https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2018/07/30/2018-16264/applications-for-new-awards-fund-for-the-improvement-of-postsecondary-education-open-textbooks-pilot" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Request for Proposals</a></span><span> states, the Open Textbooks Pilot program “supports projects at institutions of higher education (IHEs) that create new open textbooks or expand their use of open textbooks while maintaining or improving instruction and student learning outcomes.”  </span><span>The RFP outlines three absolute priorities:</span><ul><li><span>Improving collaboration and dissemination through consortia arrangements; </span></li><li><span>Addressing gaps in the open textbook marketplace and bringing solutions to scale</span>; and<span> </span></li><li><span>Promoting degree completion by creating OERs across multiple courses in a program sequence. </span></li></ul><span>A competitive preference priority involves using technology-based strategies for personalized learning and continuous improvement, which the Kirwan Center plans to address as well.</span><br><span> <br></span>The Kirwan Center's initial aim through this proposal will be to identify and organize partners—two-year and four-year institutions of higher education as well as relevant industry and non-profit partners—to contribute to the curation, creation, and vetting of openly licensed, fully accessible instructional materials for healthcare programs (such as pharmacy, nursing, and the like)<strong> </strong>where little OER exists currently and, by so doing, also stand up a more systematic and sustainable development process for other high-demand, low-OER fields.</div><div><br></div><div><p><a href="https://lumenlearning.zoom.us/recording/play/y34LqxH0VyyFnBE96kCimwk-uzkEfOeQpWrvgaBDZFdf2WzTR_JDf-Nx-djelryu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Watch a recording</a> of the High-impact OER Mini-Grant informational webinar to learn more about the program.</p><p>The Kirwan Center is excited to pursue this opportunity.   <Title>USM Announces MOST Initiative High-impact OER Mini-Grants</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div>The <a href="http://www.usmd.edu/cai" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">William E. Kirwan Center for Academic Innovation</a> is pleased to announce the <a href="http://www.usmd.edu/cai/call-proposals-most-initiative-high-impact-oer-mini-grant-program" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">High-impact OER Mini-Grant Program</a>, a new funding program designed to strategically support Maryland public institutions’ efforts to adopt and scale Open Educational Resource (OER) adoption. <span>Building upon the prior success of the <a href="http://www.usmd.edu/cai/maryland-open-source-textbook-most-initiative" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">MOST initiative</a>, this new program will support individual faculty adoption of OER and OER scaling initiatives within institutions in “high-impact,” high enrollment courses for which high-quality OER already exists.</span></div><div><br></div><div>Two types of mini-grants will be awarded:</div><div><ul><li><span>Adopt/Adapt OER ($500 - $1,500)</span></li><li><span>Scaling OER ($1,500 - $2,500)</span></li></ul><span><div><div><span>In addition to grant funding for their OER adoption or scaling project, selected grantees will also receive training and technical support in Spring 2017 to assist in the implementation of their OER plans.</span></div><div><br></div></div>Eligibility requirements include:</span></div><div><ul><li><span><strong>Adopt/Adapt OER Mini-Grants ($500 - $1,500)</strong></span></li><ul><li><span>Faculty commitment to teach at least one section of a “high-impact” course using OER during the Fall 2017 semester. Adoption in more than one section is encouraged.</span></li><li><span>Targeting OER adoption in an eligible high enrollment course with existing high-quality OER content.</span></li><li><span>Reducing students’ course materials costs to $40 or less</span></li></ul><li><span><strong>Scaling OER Mini-Grants ($1,500 - $2,500)</strong></span></li><ul><li><span>Scaling of OER to at least four sections of a “high impact” course during the Fall 2017 semester to reduce students’ cost of course materials to $40 or less.</span></li><li><span>Targeting OER adoption in an eligible high enrollment course with existing high-quality OER content.</span></li><li><span>Institutional and/or departmental support and collaboration with multiple instructors, instructional designers, librarians, and support staff preferred.</span></li></ul></ul></div><div><span>Informational webinars will be conducted February 13 - 22, 2017, to provide more details about the program and the application process. </span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>To apply for a mini-grant, applicants must complete a High-impact OER Mini-Grant Program Application and submit it to <a href="mailto:cai@usmd.edu">cai@usmd.edu</a> by 5 PM on Wednesday, March 8, 2017. </span><span>The Mini-Grant Planning Document and the application, which provides additional information and details about the program, is attached to this announcement. Would you like to immerse others in some aspect of game playing?           <div class="html-content"><div><span>Join instructional designers, faculty, and academic leaders from across the University System of Maryland in exploring how games and gamification can reinvigorate courses, boost student engagement, and enhance student learning. </span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>The University of Maryland University College (UMUC) and the Kirwan Center for Academic Innovation at the University System of Maryland are pleased to cosponsor a working symposium entitled <strong>“New Designs for Learning: Games and Gamification,” on Thursday, September 29, 2016 at the College Park Marriott Hotel &amp; Conference Center.</strong></span></div><div><br></div><div>The Symposium promises to be a forum where participants can explore what is meant by gamification and game design thinking, discover the research behind the movement to gamify learning, and test out ways to gamify their own content and approaches to course design. The keynote address and a featured workshop will be offered by <a href="http://karlkapp.com" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Dr. Karl Kapp</a>, an Instructional Technology Graduate Professor at Bloomsburg University.
