Towards Multilingual Evaluations of Knowledge for Large Language Models

Contemporary language models (LMs) support dozens of languages, promising to broaden information access for global users. However, existing multilingual evaluations largely study factual recall tasks, failing to address knowledge-intensive tasks shaped by the uneven coverage and different perspectives of knowledge across languages. This dissertation investigates how LMs handle such tasks by examining their internal parametric knowledge and their use of externally-provided contextual knowledge. In the first part, I introduce benchmarks for complex reasoning and territorial disputes, and find that LM responses on both tasks exhibit a lack of cross-lingual robustness, outputting inconsistent answers to underlying queries written in different languages. I then show that lightweight methods of leveraging program code and persona-based prompting can mitigate these issues.

In the second part, I explore the retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) setting, which combines LM's internal parametric knowledge with contextual knowledge from external knowledge bases (KBs). Focusing on the territorial disputes task, I show that while RAG over single-language or single-source KBs has mixed effects on robustness, retrieving over multilingual and multi-source KBs — Wikipedia, as well as a large-scale dataset of state media articles I collected — substantially boosts robustness. Together, these findings highlight the need for LMs that can navigate, and assist users in navigating, the real-world distribution of knowledge across languages and sources. This is a practice dissertation talk, and your feedback would be greatly appreciated!

This first session of the FDC series on AI and teaching introduces the basics of generative AI and its implications for teaching and learning. It focuses on AI literacy by examining what these tools are, what they can and cannot do, basic prompting, ethical and responsible use, and how they may impact classroom practice. Faculty will see short demos of ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and have time for Q&A.

Distributed ledger technologies (DLTs) continue to face significant security challenges. While attackers constantly adapt their strategies, governance mechanisms often remain static. Our work addresses this critical gap by introducing a framework for self-defending ledgers, where nodes enforce ledger security through adaptive governance driven by multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) grounded in game-theoretic principles. We model DLT consensus as a repeated Bayesian game, in which participants hold probabilistic beliefs about peer behavior, allowing agents to make strategic decisions under partial observability of adversarial actions. Our framework enables nodes to model, detect, and respond to a wide range of malicious behaviors, including bribery, selfish mining, equivocation, Sybil attacks, and collusive voting, by continuously updating Bayesian trust beliefs and governance policies based on network observations. We formally prove that networks with an honest majority reach stable equilibria and provide bounds on adversarial influence. Experiments across five major protocols show that agents effectively identify attacks with high accuracy while substantially reducing adversarial success. This work demonstrates the potential of game-theoretic MARL to provide robust, self-adaptive security in varied DLT environments, paving the way for resilient and autonomous ledger governance.

Md Tariqul Islam 'Pavel' is an assistant professor of cybersecurity in UMBC's Department of Information Systems. His research centers on the security, efficiency, and fault-tolerance of distributed computing systems, with a strong emphasis on blockchain, cloud, and vehicular networks. He develops formal models, algorithms, and protocols that address critical vulnerabilities in decentralized ecosystems, spanning inter-blockchain communication, smart contract migration, and trustworthy governance. His work combines cryptography, game theory, and system design to build scalable, resilient infrastructures. He earned his PhD and MS from the University of Kentucky and BS from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Gemini is the generative AI chatbot that runs Google's family of multimodal AI models. It offers powerful capabilities for academic research, teaching, and learning. This session introduces Gemini's core features, including the Deep Research tool for generating source-based summaries and citations, and the Canvas tool for organizing ideas and collaborating visually. Google is currently offering students access to the Gemini 2.5 Pro plan free for one year, but you must register for the program by October 6, 2025.

The session will highlight how Gemini can support research discovery, instructional planning, and AI-enhanced learning activities. Participants will explore prompt strategies for academic use, learn about practical applications in the classroom or library, and consider ethical considerations when using AI in educational settings.
