UMBC Professor John Schumacher will lead this session. Dr. Schumacher is the Director of the Public Health Research Center (PHRC) of CAHSS and a Professor in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Public Health (SAPH). He is also currently serving as a University System of Maryland Generative AI Pedagogy Fellow 2025-2026.

Google Gemini on Wednesday, October 1, from 12-1pm EDT, to discover how it can enhance your work and support your role in UMBC's evolving digital learning ecosystem.
Gemini is the generative AI chatbot that runs Google's family of multimodal AI models. It offers powerful capabilities for academic research, teaching, and learning. This session introduces Gemini's core features, including the
Deep Research tool for generating source-based summaries and citations, and the
Canvas tool for organizing ideas and collaborating visually. Google is currently offering students access to the Gemini 2.5 Pro plan free for one year, but you must
register for the program by October 6, 2025.
The session will highlight how Gemini can support research discovery, instructional planning, and AI-enhanced learning activities. Participants will explore prompt strategies for academic use, learn about practical applications in the classroom or library, and consider ethical considerations when using AI in educational settings. Whether you're developing a research guide, planning a course, or helping students explore topics more deeply, Google Gemini offers a flexible and accessible entry point into generative AI.

Google offers US college students free access to its top AI models for the next 14 months
Google is making its top AI models available free for US college students from now until the end of the 2025-26 academic year.The offer includes free access to Gemini Advanced, NotebookLM Plus, Whisk, and 2TB of Google storage. Students must sign up by June 30, 2025, verify their student status, and reverify their student status in the Fall of 2025 to continue for the 2025-26 academic year.
Note that students will have to use this when on a personal Gmail account, not their UMBC Gmail account. This means you are subject to the terms and conditions Google has decided, not the ones the state and UMBC have worked out, which protect your personal data and limit its use in training. If you do not cancel, you will be charged when the free trial offer ends on August 31, 2026.

Expanded set of AI tools for the UMBC community
UMBC’s Division of Information Technology announced the expanded availability of powerful AI tools to support the UMBC community in teaching, learning, research, and productivity.
All UMBC accounts now have access to the free version of Google Gemini, which has a wide range of AI-powered features that can assist with writing, brainstorming, and information-gathering tasks. The Gemini suite also includes the new notebookLM system that helps users understand and organize information from uploaded documents. It can also generate audio overviews of that information and Gemini’s Deep Research tool. Paid licenses for Gemini Advanced will be available in some cases.
All UMBC accounts now have default access to the free version of Microsoft Copilot, which provides a model for brainstorming, email generation, and more. Paid licenses for Copilot Pro that allow integration with the Microsoft 365 suite (Word, Excel, Teams, …) are available in some cases.
UMBC now has a local instance of Amplify, an innovative AI tool developed by Vanderbilt University that provides access to commercial AI models hosted within UMBC's secure cloud environment, including from OpenAI, such as GPT-4o or o1 series, Meta Llama, or Anthropic Claude models. Access to UMBC's Amplify is available to faculty and staff upon submission of an access request.
