Marylanders attitudes toward AI Reults of a poll of 810 Maryland adults

UMBC's Institute of Politics released the third and final part of their recent poll of 810 Maryland adults with the results of a set of questions on "Attitudes toward artificial intelligence". 

Maryland Matters has a good overview of the results, which it summarized as "Nearly all Marylanders responding to a new poll said they are aware of artificial intelligence — and they have concerns." As an example, the piece notes that "81% are concerned about the spread of misinformation and political propaganda because of AI."

As a requirement of the Maryland AI Act (SB 818 of 2024), the State and University System of Maryland may require UMBC to be aware of all AI uses, programs, projects, and their associated risks. Help us stay ahead of the regulatory curve in the quickly evolving intersection of artificial intelligence and higher education. UMBC faculty should mail Anupam Joshi, UMBC's chief AI officer, and copy to Kyle Pokorny with a brief description of their AI use that is not a research project.

The university's AI working group, in coordination with University Communications and Marketing, has created an Artificial Intelligence at UMBC logo that should be used on all projects and programs moving forward. The goal is to create a common identity across UMBC's myriad AI efforts. The Maryland Center for Computing Education (MCCE) will hold a free one-day event at UMBC on Saturday, June 21, 2025, focused on AI in all levels of education. The Future Ready Maryland AI Summit is unique for all PreK-12 and higher education stakeholders, as it features student voices, opportunities, and educational resources for Maryland educators, school districts, colleges, and universities.

Federal and industry partners are invited to share educational opportunities for students, including internships, apprenticeships, and certification pathways. Potential supporters should complete this interest form, and those interested in presenting should use the Call for Proposals form.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) signed an executive order calling for the state to develop guardrails to protect residents from the risk of bias and discrimination as artificial intelligence becomes increasingly useful and common, though the order did not specify how the government intends to use AI in the future.

Moore's executive order establishes an AI subcabinet to ensure that state agencies follow a set of principles guiding the ethical and productive use of AI technologies. The subcabinet will also be tasked with identifying opportunities AI could offer to recruit or expand businesses, providing a needed jolt to the state's sluggish economy. Maryland officials on Monday additionally announced plans to modernize the state's digital infrastructure, expand access to online resources and combat cybersecurity threats.
