    <Title>Teaching Circle: Active Learning and In-class Assessment in the Age of AI</Title>

          <div class="html-content"><p>UMBC's <a href="https://mathstat.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><strong>Department of Mathematics and Statistics</strong></a> will hold a teaching circle series on "Active Learning and In-class Assessment in the Age of AI", moderated by Professor <a href="https://manilsuri.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><strong>Manil Suri</strong></a>. The sessions will explore the pedagogical pitfalls and possibilities that new AI systems have opened up, with a focus on Math 200 and 300 level undergraduate courses.</p><p>The first session will be held 12-1pm on Monday, October 27, in 409 Sondheim Hall, with subsequent sessions on <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/mathweb/events/147182" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><strong>November 10</strong></a> and <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/mathweb/events/147183" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><strong>December 8</strong></a>.     <Title>HS student William Gao a finalist in Regeneron Talent Search</Title>

          <div class="html-content"><div><span>William Gao, a senior in the Centennial High School, was selected as one of the 40 finalists in the 2024 <a href="https://www.societyforscience.org/regeneron-sts/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><strong>Regeneron Science Talent Search</strong></a> from among more than 2,000 entrants. Each finalist was awarded a $25,000 prize.</span></div><div><div><br></div><div>William was mentored by UMBC <a href="https://userpages.umbc.edu/~yihuang/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><strong>Professor Yi Huang</strong></a>, an Associate Professor of Mathematics and Statistics. Their research led to the development of an artificial intelligence-driven, resource-efficient, mobile diagnostic system to identify cancerous regions in patient tumor samples which is described in an article in Cancer Informatics:</div><div><br></div></div><blockquote><div><div>Gao W, Wang D, Huang Y, <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38033362/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Designing a Deep Learning-Driven Resource-Efficient Diagnostic System for Metastatic Breast Cancer: Reducing Long Delays of Clinical Diagnosis and Improving Patient Survival in Developing Countries</a>, Cancer Informatics 2023;22.</div></div></blockquote><div><div><br></div><div>Finalists will participate in a week-long competition in March 2024, during which they will undergo a rigorous judging process that goes beyond their own research to encompass other scientific disciplines and compete for more than $1.8 million in awards.</div></div></div>
