Registration for 2026 Country-to-Country CTF is open!

The International Cyber Security – Center of Excellence (INCS-CoE) is once again inviting students to participate in the 2025 international, Country-to-Country (C2C) Capture the Flag (CTF) competition.

The final round of the competition will take place at the University of  Indonesia (UI), Bali, from 10–14 August 2026.

As the team is ramping things up as we move into the meat of fall semester, I wanted to let you all know about a few returning opportunities.

Windows and Linux Workshops Returning this semester, our Windows- and Linux-specific meetings will focus on a variety of active cyber defense-focused topics, including system administration basics, forensics, threat hunting, and more! This year, all of our workshops will take place on Tuesdays from 7:15 to 8:15PM in a room TBD, starting on September 16 and running until December 2. This semester, we will be alternating weeks for workshops as follows:
September 16 - First Windows workshop
September 23 - First Linux workshop
September 30 - Second Windows workshop
October 7 - Second Linux workshop
... and so on. I hope to see you there!

Team Entry Form For those interested in competing, this is the single best way to stay in the loop with competition signups and tryouts. By filling out this form, you gain access to the CyberDawgs team server, and intermittent training exercises, resources, and sign-ups to compete in CTF and Red vs. Blue competitions with your fellow team members. Anyone can join, regardless of academic major, class standing, or any of that (I'm a History major)!

Welcome Back, CyberDawgs! I hope everyone has had a great start to the semester! We have a lot planned for this semester hope you all are as excited to get started as we are!! 


Club Meetings Our meetings will occur every Monday Night from 7:15 PM to 8:15 PM in a Room TBD and via Webex:https://umbc.webex.com/meet/CyberDawgs. Everyone is welcome, regardless of whether you're well-versed in cybersecurity or new to the field. Our First Meeting is Monday, September 15; we can’t wait to see you all there! 


CyberPaws CTF A new CTF challenge will be released at the end of each meeting. Keep your eyes on ⁠old-challenge-releases. They will be fun, beginner-friendly, and designed to help you build your skills. At the start of each meeting, we will walk through the previous week's challenge. There will be tech prizes for the top 3 solvers. 


Hacker Trivia Returning for its second semester, [VP] Alex H and [T] Michael M will be hosting hacker trivia night on September 22! Club members will be split into teams to answer questions from a wide variety of cyber-related trivia categories. 


Cyber Movie Night 

We will hold a movie night during our November 10th Club Meeting as a break from the technical jargon. We offer free pizza, popcorn, and drinks. This will be a great chance to hang out with fellow club members and relax from the stress of school. The movie is TBD. 


Cyber Defense Exercise (CDE) 

Our Cyber Defense Exercise (CDE) will be on Saturday, October 4. CDE is a Red/Blue competition open to all UMBC students. It is a great way to experience a competitive environment while learning about cybersecurity. Registration information will be out soon.


End-of-Semester Celebration

At the final club meeting on December 8th, all students are invited to take a break before exams. We provide free pizza, drinks, candy, music, and games. We will also announce winners of our CyberPaws CTF and hand out prizes!

FIRETALKS
On Monday, May 5th, the club leadership will hand the meeting over to club members for a “FireTalks” meeting! Participants will prepare and present a 10-minute talk on a technical topic of their choosing! The talks will be back-to-back, rapid-fire style!

There will be a prize for the best one! We only have time for 8 participants, so if you’re interested, sign up ASAP! The deadline to sign up will be Sunday, May 4th, at 11:59 PM.

Tryouts will be held this Friday and Saturday! YOU ONLY HAVE TO ATTEND ONE TRY-OUT DATE.

Tryouts are primarily used to determine placement on competition teams. However, tryouts are also a great opportunity to learn and test skills, so give it a shot; even if you feel you might not get placed, you don’t know unless you try! Tryouts will be held this Friday and Saturday! YOU ONLY HAVE TO ATTEND ONE TRY-OUT DATE.

Tryouts are primarily used to determine placement on travel competition teams. However, tryouts are also a great opportunity to learn and test skills, so give it a shot; even if you feel you might not get placed, you don’t know unless you try!

Preparing For Tryouts
If this is your first time doing Tryouts, you might have some questions about how to prepare and succeed. Below are some resources to help you get familiar and ready for tryouts: TryHackMe Learning Paths/Modules/Rooms:
This list is non exhaustive and some of materials are not relevant for tryouts, but it is all helpful in the long run!

Final Thoughts
The most important skills of tryouts will be detecting vulnerabilities, incident response, and documentation. Also, remember Tryouts are open-note, Google, and AI. But don’t come without unprepared. Create and bring a checklist!
