Sri Lankan Student Association is excited to offer you an opportunity to participate in our Cultivate to Educate Banquet on April 7th in the UC Ballroom!
Goal of the Event: We aim to bring awareness to social and cultural issues around the globe and here in Baltimore to show how everyone faces hardship and triumph, so we can all unite to overcome adversity and celebrate successes.
How we will do this: We will create an interactive format where hosts select a person from the audience to embody a character; the character is one person representing a different situation around the world (your org can design a unique character to represent the issue of your choosing!). Based on the situation described in the script, the person moves to a different section of the audience generally divided into under-resourced, adequate-resources, and plentiful resources. We weave the audience through different narratives so they understand personal stories from around the globe.
For the second half of the event, we have dinner and a show with different student groups performing artistic pieces such as spoken word, dance solos, or musical pieces all with a social or cultural theme.
How your org can participate:
We would love for your org to showcase an issue of unique importance to you. There are 4 ways to be involved (pick as many as your org can commit to and see the Doc below for examples!):
1) Contribute to the script:
- Your org can create a character (real or fictional) to represent a person facing a specific issue from health disparities, limited education, natural disaster recovery, etc.
- We will then work with you to write a script to create a narrative for that character to share the social issue with the audience.
2) Performance:
- If your org members have artistic pieces representing your culture or a social theme we would love to include your performance!
- Please contact William Chanmugam <wchanm1@umbc.edu> for more information.
3) Table:
- During the intermission we would like to have tables representing different student org's causes so audience members can learn more about the situations highlighted in the script.
- You could also consider having a cash box at your table to collect donations or other items.
4) Character Cards:
- Every person in the audience receives a Character Card, or a card describing a person experiencing a different situation and living condition around the world.
- If you would like to have audience members learn more about different people from your country, culture, or social situation you can write out cards explaining different individuals.
5) Other Ideas!
- We are open to any other ideas you have and would love to incorporate them into the event!
Thank you for considering being part of this event! Our org would be excited to work with you and greatly appreciates your interest. We hope to hear from you soon or see you at the interest meeting!
