Researcher of the Week: Elisabeth Kan

  <Tagline>Investigating the HIV host cell</Tagline>

Elisabeth Kan is a Biological Sciences B.S. Major, and Emergency Health Services Minor who will graduate in May, 2020. She recently received a UMBC Travel Award to present her research at ABRCMS in Anaheim, California.

Title of your research project: Elucidating the Structure of the HIV-1 5′ Leader Through a Paramagnetically Tagged Reporter Protein

Describe your project: The project I am working on uses metal bound complexes in nuclear magnetic resonance to study how HIV’s viral material is structured. Understanding the underlying structure will in turn provide us with crucial information about the assembly and function of HIV in the host cell.

Who is your mentor(s) for your project? Dr. Michael F. Summers Chemistry & Biochemistry Department. I found this mentor through other undergraduate researchers who spoke very highly of Dr. Summers and the research conducted in his lab. I chose Dr. Summers because I was very interested in retrovirus research from a Genetics course I took my sophomore year.

How did you become interested in this project? I work very closely under the mentorship of post-doc, Dr. Jonathan Catazaro and two other undergraduate students, Faith Davis and Claudia Walker. I became interested in this project through my mentor as he was working on novel ways to use NMR with larger RNA constructs.

What has been the hardest part about your research/What was the most unexpected thing about being a researcher? The hardest part about our research is trying to reproduce our data. There are so many unexpected variables to our project and since we are working with larger RNA constructs, it’s hard to pinpoint what may have gone wrong with our experiments. Although it has been challenging, I really enjoy trying to problem solve and come up with new solutions whenever our data is inconclusive.

What has been the most rewarding part? The most rewarding part about the research we are doing is being able to take part in problem solving and developing solutions to our inconclusive results. I really enjoy being able to try out different experimental conditions and every so often seeing that it works!

How will you disseminate your research? Next week I will be giving an oral presentation at ABRCMS which is the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students. I also plan on presenting at URCAD in the spring.

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research? If you’re considering getting involved in research, make sure that you rotate in the PI’s laboratory and get to know the students working in the lab. They make a big difference in your lab experience and it is important to find a place that has a nurturing educational environment.

What are your career goals? I aspire to be a physician who specializes in internal medicine or pediatrics.

Researcher of the Week: Emily Godfrey

  <Tagline>Choreographing her Passions Through Dance</Tagline>

Emily Godfrey is a Dance major with a minor in Psychology, who will graduate in May, 2020. She is a URA Scholar and a Linehan Artists Scholar. She performed her piece, "stoP ActiNg hysterICal” at last year's URCAD, and will present again this year.

Title of your research project:
Contemporary Choreographic Perspectives

Describe your project:
My project is to research performance and choreographic techniques from various contemporary/modern companies and utilizes that information to create my Senior Capstone Work, a twelve-minute dance performed by four dancers. Over the summer, I studied with the Paul Taylor Modern Dance Company (founded in 1954) and the Peridance Contemporary Dance Company (founded in 1984). This winter, I will be studying abroad with Ann Sofie Clemmensen to Denmark to research international contemporary techniques.

Who is your mentor(s) for your project?
Professor Carol Hess is the chair of the dance department and has mentored me throughout my university experience, offering guidance from course work to compositional ideas. I have a very trusting relationship with her and I really value her advice and input.

How did you become interested in this project?
I wanted to gather as much research and experience in the process of creating my senior capstone work. I wanted to continue my dance technique training while jumping in to a company lifestyle to gain a better understanding of the career I was pursuing. I learned of the Paul Taylor Modern Dance Company through a UMBC faculty member, Constance Dinapoli, and I discovered the work of the Peridance Contemporary Dance Company when a UMBC alumni became an apprentice there.
Those companies, though vastly different in style, carry choreographic ideas and themes that captured my attention.

What has been the hardest part about your research/what was the most unexpected thing about being a researcher?
A natural change in creating a new choreographic work is translating my artistic vision to my dancers while allowing their own artistry and interpretation. All the dancers I am working with are inexperienced learning movement created by a student choreographer and performing in the modern-contemporary genre. During the process of creating the work, I had to take my time and have patience explaining the different movement styles because what was natural to me was foreign to them. Another challenge, while expected was nevertheless difficult, was working within a constrained amount of time, to complete and premier the work.

What has been the most rewarding part?
The work premiered November 8th and 9th, and when I was able to watch the piece in full performance mode, I felt fulfilled. I had been focusing on tiny (but important) details and giving my cast reminders right before the show, unsure if they would be able to embody everything. Watching the piece and hearing the audiences reaction, everyone taking their own meaning but the movement still resonating within them, was the most rewarding.

How will you disseminate your research?
I plan to present my research at URCAD 2020 by premiering my senior capstone piece again. Prior to the next performance, I plan to look over the piece and discuss with my mentor any changes or adjustments I can make.

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research?

Research derives from your passion(s), the need to explore, discover, and create. The work is never quite done, but that is what makes the research thrilling. For myself, dance is forever evolving and changing, and I know that there will always be new inspiration and the need to share my creative outlook.

What are your career goals?
After I graduate in Spring 2020, I plan to work with a professional dance company under contract while still creating pieces to gain a choreographic fellowship.

Researcher of the Week: Anna Feerick

  <Tagline>Have a Teflon pan? Anna's research predicts carcinogens!</Tagline>

Anna Feerick is earning a B.S. in Chemistry, with an Environmental Science Minor. She will graduate in May 2020, and is a two-time Undergraduate Research Award Scholar, 2018-2019 and 2019-2020.

Title of your research project: Novel passive sampling method for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances

Describe your project: Per- and polyfloroalkyl substances (PFAS) are extremely stable molecules present in a variety of consumer products (e.g. Teflon, nonstick coating, flameproof materials) and are predicted carcinogens. The goal of this project is to investigate a passive sampling method to determine concentrations of prioritized PFAS in environmental samples.

Who is your mentor(s) for your project?

My mentors are Dr. Lee Blaney and Dr. Ke He in the Chemical, Biochemical, and Environmental engineering department. I was introduced to Dr. Blaney through Dr. Tara Carpenter in the chemistry department. Dr. He is a postdoctoral research who is has continued working in the lab after obtaining his PhD. I chose these individuals because they are working towards positive change within the environment, something I also aspire to do.

How did you become interested in this project?

My interest in this project stems from my previous work on contaminates within the Chesapeake Bay. I began learning about other contaminants and their health effects. PFAS are one of the more troubling groups of compounds due to their pervasiveness and health effects. This impassioned me to work with this group of chemicals.

What has been the hardest part about your research/What was the most unexpected thing about being a researcher?

The hardest part is developing a new idea. Problems are easy to find. Effective solutions are not.

What has been the most rewarding part?

Seeing my progress both personal and project wise. I have developed new research skills and have the opportunity to solve a larger problem.

How will you disseminate your research?

I will be presenting my research at URCAD and the ACS national conference in March.

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research?

Ask early and don’t be afraid to test out a new field in undergraduate.

What are your career goals?

I am hoping to be accepted into graduate school this March and will begin working on my Ph.D. this time next fall!

Researcher of the Week: Ashley Majekodunmi

<Tagline>From the headlines! Immune responses to E-Cigarettes</Tagline>

Olufolake Majekodunmi is a Biological Sciences major, a URA Scholar, and a MARC U*STAR Scholar who will graduate in May, 2021.

Title of your research project: Behavioral and Physiological Effects of E-cigarette Flavorings in TRPM5 and TRPM5-KO Mice: Altered Taste Preference and Immune Response

Describe your project: My project is to examine inflammatory responses in the taste cells of mice models after exposure to e-juices through the process of immunostaining.

Who is your mentor(s) for your project?

My mentor is Dr. Weihong Lin and Dr. Tatsuya Ogura of the Biological Sciences Department. After my freshman year, I wanted to get involved with research, so I emailed Dr. Lin and luckily, she was open to me joining her lab. I chose their lab because I was interested in the effects of drugs on the physiological parts of the body. My mentors are very supportive and they are always there when I need help.

How did you become interested in this project?

In my first year in the lab, I performed behavioral tests. I studied the effect of e-cigarette flavorings and their masking ability on nicotine-containing fluid with mice models. We saw the masking ability in the flavor menthol. After that experience, I was very interested in the effects of e-cigarette exposure on the tongue.

What has been the hardest part about your research/What was the most unexpected thing about being a researcher?

The hardest part so far has been the cutting and embedding of tissue samples. It’s very easy to make a mistake, however I was able to overcome this with the guidance of my mentors.

What has been the most rewarding part?

I believe research is discovering the unknown and I get to help solve that unknown problem. I find the process of that discovery rewarding because the challenges and failures along the way make it worthwhile.

How will you disseminate your research?

I will present my research at URCAD and hopefully publish a paper in the future.

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research?

Find a research area that interests you and don’t be afraid to ask questions. I had so many questions when I first entered the lab and I was too afraid to ask my mentors. There is nothing wrong with asking questions.

What are your career goals?

My career goal is to obtain a Ph.D. in pharmacology and become a biomedical scientist.
