Researcher of the Week: Briana Yancy

<Tagline>Working with a mentor outside your major can have rewards!</Tagline>

List any Scholars/Honors programs you are a part of: Meyerhoff Scholar 27 Cohort, URA Scholar

Title of your research project: Nest Site Characteristics of the Bahama Oriole: Habitat Requirements of a Critically Endangered Species

Describe your project: My project examines the nest site characteristics of the Bahama Oriole. I am interested in determining the habitat requirements of this critically endangered species in order to make suggestions for national parks and protected areas.

Who is your mentor(s) for your project? Why did you choose them? My mentor is Dr. Kevin Omland, UMBC Biology Department. My mentor was my Biology 142 teacher and I chose him because I felt like his research projects and my interests aligned well. At the time I did not know of a lot of people whose research focused on conservation and I have always had an interest in birds.

How did you become interested in this project? I became interested in this project because of my passion for conservation and research. I had also never gotten the opportunity to travel much or do any field work but I knew that was something I was interested in.

What has been the hardest part about your research/what was the most unexpected thing about being a researcher? The hardest part about my research was the travel. I was not used to going far away, especially without my parents. My anxiety tried to get the best of me but my lab family helped to support me and make me feel okay.

What has been the most rewarding part? The most rewarding part is the outreach and effect on the community in the Bahamas this project has had. Every year we run into people who have our cards or have heard of us and want to help. They end up showing us nests or giving us valuable information about the birds and they always like to learn more about the project and how we are doing.

How will you disseminate your research? I will present at URCAD in April.

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research? My advice to other students about getting involved in research is to get started as early as you can and do not be afraid to work in a lab that follows your interests but not necessarily your major. At first I thought I might not be able to work in a biology lab because my major is environmental science but I fit in perfectly.

What are your career goals? My career goals are to go to a masters program where I can combine my three passions: research, animal care and education. I want to work with institutions, zoo, and aquariums in order to improve facilities, introduce more conservation programs of endangered species and habitat restoration while greatly increasing community engagement.

The Diversity Summer Internship Program at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health has an opening for a fall internship (minimum of 10 hours/week) supporting the Day at the Market initiative based in the Department of Environmental Health and Engineering and The Johns Hopkins Institute for Clinical and Translational Research.

The Day at the Market is a multifaceted program of outreach and engagement sponsored by the Johns Hopkins East Baltimore campus. The program takes place at the Northeast Market the first Tuesday as well as every second and last Wednesday of every month. The Northeast Market is where Johns Hopkins meets the community and is an important venue where Johns Hopkins can bridge the disconnect regarding the lack of access to resources and information. Our Johns Hopkins faculty, staff, students and researchers participate in Market Day and use this program as a learning tool for being a better partner with the community, as a dissemination vehicle to return what they have learned to the community, and as a means to deepen interactions with community partners and members. The goals of the initiative include providing patrons with pertinent educational materials, answers to questions from experts, and services or resources that will help them make positive behavioral changes for health.

The iOme (I OWE ME) Challenge is a national competition operated by The Women’s Institute for a Secure Retirement (WISER) to raise awareness
among college students about the impact of financial security in retirement on the social and economic
well being of our society. Students from across the country respond to the annual iOme Challenge
question in the form of a policy and research paper and a promotional video. A blue ribbon panel judges
the submissions and selects the winning team.

This year, students were asked to imagine that they have been invited by Congress to join a Special
Bipartisan Task Force to address the nation's growing retirement crisis. Their task was to develop ideas
and solutions for increasing retirement savings opportunities for millennials.

Evan’s essay, Rethinking Millennial Retirement: Policy Recommendations for a Gig Economy,
“demonstrated great policy depth, a keen understanding of the challenges millennials face, and creativity
in devising solutions that are achievable for this age cohort” said David Wegge, Interim Dean of Schneider School of Business and Economics, St. Norbert College, one of the founders of the competition, and a member of the judging panel.

Cindy Hounsell, President of Women’s Institute for a Secure Retirement, sponsor of the competition said,
“We are impressed by Mr. Avila’s response to the more complicated challenges and deterrents millennials
face in preparing for their future retirement. We look forward to his presentation and policy discussion at
    our upcoming symposium.”

As the winner, Mr. Avila will present his paper at a symposium on Capitol Hill and have an opportunity to discuss it with public policymakers. The faculty advisor for the project, Professor Douglas J. Lamdin, department of Economics at UMBC, will also attend and participate in the panel. The symposium, "The
Millennial Perspective: An Intergenerational Discussion on Retirement Solutions" will be held on June 20, 2018 and is sponsored by WISER. A keynote speaker, panels of experts and congressional staff
leaders will also discuss current issues and legislative proposals. A reception will follow honoring the
    iOme Challenge winner.

Congratulations, Evan!
