Come to URCAD on Wednesday, April 25, where Physics major Peter Braunschweig will present his research “Urban Heat Islands and the Great American Eclipse” in the UC Ballroom at 10 a.m.
The urban heat island effect is a phenomenon in which, due to human activity, cities exhibit higher temperatures than their surroundings, especially at night. The goal of this study is to determine whether the heat island effect is similarly pronounced during a total solar eclipse. During the “Great American Eclipse” on August 21, 2017, surface temperature data was collected from weather stations across Missouri, focusing on the city of St. Louis and the surrounding area.
