On September 27-29, 2018, the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) hosts Shifting the Landscape: Black Architects and Planners, 1968 to Now, a symposium held in the Oprah Winfrey Theater. The symposium focuses on the activism, engagement, and impact of black architects and urban planners over the past fifty years. The event will bring together architects, planners, and scholars of the built environment. 

On the occasion of this symposium, NMAAHC’s Office of Strategic Partnerships is funding Symposium Travel Scholarships for senior-level undergraduate or graduate students to attend the full program. Applicants must be currently enrolled in a full-time academic program in architecture, design, urban planning, historic preservation, African American studies or a related field. Scholarships will provide recipients with a cash award of $1,000 to offset travel and/or lodging expenses. Please visit the Museum’s Opportunities page for application and eligibility requirements. A completed application and estimate of travel costs, along with a resume or CV and transcript are required as part of the application. Preference will be given to applicants from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and/or from outside the local Washington, DC commuting area.
