Contrary to popular belief, stress itself is never a good thing--it is always harmful. This course will show you the difference between pressure, which spurs you into action and helps you to perform at your peak, and stress, which impedes your performance, and has long-term health implications. You will learn how to recognize stress and categorize it appropriately, learn to distinguish between job stressors, and see the benefits of recognizing stress. You will also learn about relaxing techniques and coping mechanisms to help challenge and reframe negative thinking and handle receiving constructive feedback. This is course number: PD0182

Visit the UMBC SkillSoft website for a Quick Start Guide, FAQ’s, and the link to log in to SkillPort.

For more information about SkillSoft and the Business Exploration Series courseware, click here.

To schedule a department presentation about using SkillSoft for professional development, call ext. 5-6262 or e-mail hrtraining@umbc.edu.

  <Tagline>Workplace Conflict</Tagline>

Conflict can have many causes – disagreements about who does what, or about how things are done, as well as disagreements related to personality and style. And inevitably, conflicts will arise in the workplace, so it's critical to be able to deal with them successfully. If you avoid conflict that requires quick, decisive action, or if you take an aggressive approach when you need to gain the commitment of the other person, you may make the situation worse. Unresolved conflict can intensify and hinder your productivity as you spend more time worrying about the conflict than achieving your goals. And remember, the costs of prolonged conflict can be high – negative emotions, blocked communication, and stress. But choosing the appropriate response based on the type of conflict is important. When you address conflict properly, you will experience a number of benefits: it can enhance your creativity and it can strengthen your relationships, for example. These six videos cover confronting employees, understanding the five styles of personal conflict and how to resolve those conflicts. Materials designed to support blended learning activities aligned with this course are available from the Resources Page.

• Confrontation: What’s the Best Approach: pc_bi_mgbi009
• Personal Conflict Styles: pc_bi_pabi002
• Coping with Accusations in the Workplace: pc_ch_lsch003
• Managing Conflict: pc_ch_lach009
• Manager to Manager Conflict: pc_ch_mgch003
• Conflict: Avoid, Confront, or Delay?: pc_ch_pach004

Visit the UMBC SkillSoft website for a Quick Start Guide, FAQ’s, and the link to log in to SkillPort.

For more information about SkillSoft and the Business Exploration Series courseware, click here.

To schedule a department presentation about using SkillSoft for professional development, call ext. 5-6262 or e-mail hrtraining@umbc.edu.

Preventative Measures for Protecting Your Health During Flu

With the early arrival of flu season across the country and in
Maryland, UMBC University Health Services (UHS) is urging faculty and
staff to take preventive measures to protect their health and the health
of our colleagues. Cases of influenza are expected to increase
throughout the flu season. Because flu can spread by contact with people
who are ill, UMBC Health Services staff recommend that staff and
    faculty take these precautions:
Get a flu shot. A limited number of flu shots are available at
University Health Services. UHS is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 -
5:00. Students, staff and faculty may walk in or make an appointment by
     calling 410-455-2542.
UHS accepts most major health insurance plans. Patients should bring
their UMBC IDs and Health Insurance information to University Health
Services. Flu shots also are available at local pharmacies, clinics and
    physician’s offices.

Wash hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
or use hand sanitizer frequently, especially after touching common
surfaces such as door handles. Cover your mouth when coughing or
sneezing with either a disposable tissue or a sleeve, and avoid touching
your face. Avoid contact with people who are sick. Get plenty of rest
to keep the immune system working at its best.

Monitor your health. Flu symptoms include fever with cough or sore
throat, and sometimes runny nose, body aches, headache, vomiting or
    diarrhea.

What to do if sick with the flu:

Persons with flu symptoms should stay home. Ill individuals should
limit contact with others who are not sick. Those with flu-like symptoms
should not return to class or work until they no longer have a fever (a
temperature of less than 100.5 F) for at least 24 hours without the use
     of fever-reducing medications.

Staff and faculty with the flu should utilize normal departmental
call-out procedures to report their illness. Appropriate medical
documentation may be required for absences involving multiple days. For
additional clarification regarding absences from work, faculty and
staff should contact the Human Resources Department.

Individuals should seek medical attention if they have acute symptoms
such as body aches, cough or a fever of more than 100.5. If a faculty
or staff member comes to UHS for medical care, they must bring their
health insurance cards with them; otherwise, they will be charged full
price for their visit. They should talk with a doctor about appropriate
medicine to treat flu or flu-like symptoms.

If an individual gets worse after being on the medication for three
or four days, they should come back to University Health Services or
their primary care provider to have their lungs rechecked to make sure
they have not developed a secondary infection. Those with chronic health
conditions, such as asthma, or complications should call their health
care provider or University Health Services at 410-455-2542.

Jan. SkillSoft Topic of the Month: Goals and Setting Goals

<Tagline>Identify the benefits of defining achievable goals</Tagline>

Skillsoft Topic of the Month: Goals and Setting Goals

Most achievements, great or small, begin with an important first step: setting a goal. However, the process of setting appropriate goals is often oversimplified or overlooked entirely. A well-constructed goal is challenging, yet achievable. It takes into account the abilities and resources available and requires the goal seeker to make the best use of both. Perfect for enacting New Year’s Resolutions, this course will help you examine the types of goals you can use to advance your career and personal life, learn to construct goals that are both challenging and achievable, discover how to embed the seeds of success within your goals, and explore ways to align your goals with your own priorities and the priorities of others who influence the way you use your time. This is course number pd_05_a03_bs_enus.
