How to Strategically Build Your Network

    <Tagline>Learn a beginner-friendly way to expand your connections</Tagline>

Now that spring break is behind us, it’s time to think of
          the next big thing: graduation.

Graduation comes with a lot of feelings, maybe even anxiety
or dread. This could be the result of many things, but you don’t have to tackle
it alone. The Career Center is here to support you with your next steps.

Did you know that your network is your net worth? What this
means is that having an extensive network could be the key to shiny job prospects.
But where do you even start?

Answer: alumni networks.

Here are a couple of suggestions for how you can tap into
          the alumni resource:

          Retrievers
Connect. This professional networking platform is just for UMBC
students and alumni. Once you join, you’ll be able to speak to alumni directly
through email and video chat, ask them about their experiences, and gain access
to a broad network of professionals.
Alumni volunteers are ready and available to help students just like
          you.

          LinkedIn.
On the UMBC LinkedIn page, you’ll have access to 79,000+ alumni, right at
your fingertips. You can conduct a search on your career field of interest to
find professionals in that field that you can reach out to. You can also see
where alumni are employed, as well as the skills they have in order to do their
work. You could be just one DM away from finding an alumni contact to help you
          with your career.

The alumni network is a resource worth exploring. Not only
do they have shared experiences with you as a UMBC student, but they’ve also
“been there” when it comes to the job market and can provide useful insight.
Don’t wait, reach out to an alum today.

Looking to network with alumni in real-time? Join the Career

Intern of the Week: Iverson Scarlett

  <Tagline>Check out Iverson's internship!</Tagline>

    Name: Iverson Scarlett

Pronouns: He/Him

Semester of Internship: Spring 2024

Major: Information Systems

Current Class Level: Senior

This semester I completed a(n)...: Research Experience

Internship, Co-op, or Research Site (Company/Organization Name): SONG Lab

Location of the Organization (City, State): Catonsville, MD

Title of position: Machine Learning Researcher

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities:
As a participant in this research project, I am contributing to an exciting and important area at the intersection of two cutting-edge fields: explainable artificial intelligence (AI) and digital forensics. This has the potential to shape how we approach and conduct forensic investigations in the digital age, where vast amounts of data and complex AI systems are increasingly involved.

The core focus of my research is to explore how we can make the decision-making processes and inner workings of AI systems more transparent and interpretable, especially in the context of digital forensics. This is crucial because AI algorithms, while powerful, can sometimes act as ""black boxes,"" providing results without explaining the reasoning behind them. In sensitive domains like law enforcement and legal proceedings, understanding the rationale and logic behind AI-generated conclusions is essential for maintaining trust, accountability, and admissibility of evidence.

Through my research, we investigate various explainable AI techniques and their applicability to different stages of the digital forensics process, such as data acquisition, analysis, and reporting. This involves analyzing methods like LIME, SHAP, and Grad-CAM, and understanding how they can provide human-interpretable explanations for AI-based forensic analysis.

My day-to-day tasks include:
Conducting an extensive literature review on explainable AI techniques, digital forensics processes, and the intersection of these two areas. Identify key challenges, open research questions, and potential opportunities.
Developing an outline and initial structure for the position paper.
Exploring and analyzing different explainable AI methods and their applicability to digital forensics use cases. Investigation of how explainable AI could enhance various stages of the digital forensics process, such as data acquisition, analysis, and reporting.
Researching real-world case studies or examples where explainable AI has been used (or could be used) to improve forensic analysis, provide transparency, and enhance human-AI collaboration.
Identifying potential ethical, legal, and social implications of using explainable AI in digital forensics.
Developing well-reasoned arguments and defensible positions on the role of explainable AI in this domain.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?
I heard about this position through my IS advisor, and I was notified that I could attend the 2023 IS Student Research Outreach on 11/28. Students and faculty at the Department of Information Systems conduct exciting and frontier research in many areas. This event provided a platform to explain how to conduct research and highlight research opportunities to students. The event mainly targeted undergraduates at the IS department. Undergraduates at other departments and graduate students who want to start research with IS faculty were also welcome to attend.

What resources did you use to find your current experience?
Networking events (UMBC Connects, Info Sessions, Arts With a Purpose, etc.), LinkedIn or other social media

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?
One of the highlights of my internship experience has been the chance to immerse myself in the cutting-edge fields of explainable artificial intelligence (AI) and its applications in cybersecurity. This intersection is teeming with innovation and offers groundbreaking ways to bolster our digital defenses in an era where cyber threats are increasingly sophisticated.

As an undergraduate student with a fervent interest in machine learning, diving into this research has been incredibly fulfilling. It has been an eye-opening journey to see firsthand how the principles of AI can be applied to develop robust cybersecurity solutions. My excitement lies in exploring how to make these AI systems not just powerful, but also transparent and accountable. Given the critical role of cybersecurity in protecting our digital lives, the significance of building trust in AI systems cannot be overstated.

This experience has also prompted me to consider the broader implications of my work. Ethical considerations, such as bias in AI or the privacy of data, are crucial challenges we must navigate. Addressing these issues has been intellectually stimulating and has underscored the importance of developing technology with a conscience.

Most importantly, being part of this pioneering research project as an undergraduate has reinforced my determination to carve out a career at the intersection of machine learning and cybersecurity. The possibility of my work influencing the future of cybersecurity practices, making digital spaces safer and more reliable, is incredibly motivating. It’s a reminder of the tangible impact that my chosen field of study can have on society.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?
I believe as an undergraduate researcher I believe that my work can contribute to laying the foundation for future advancements in this field. By exploring the intersection of explainable AI and digital forensics, I was able to identify key challenges, opportunities, and potential research directions that can guide and inspire future scholars and professionals in this domain. The focus on the ethical, legal, and social implications of using explainable AI in digital forensics is particularly impactful. As an undergraduate researcher, bringing my perspective could contribute to shaping the responsible development and deployment of these technologies. I believe Digital forensics plays a crucial role in cybersecurity investigations, law enforcement, and the prosecution of cybercrimes. Research conducted in this area can indirectly contribute to enhancing the capabilities of these fields by proposing methods for more reliable, trustworthy, and interpretable AI-driven forensic analyses, ultimately aiding in the fight against cybercrime and the protection of digital assets.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?
Make good connections. Engage in on-campus clubs and activities that focus on your major and your own career goals. Try to reach out to faculty who have engaged in research projects or even one of your peers and create connections there as well. I feel like there are a lot of opportunities to engage in research on campus which could help you gain experience for future internships and full time positions.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.
I am grateful to have this position as it opened eyes to endless possibilities and integration between technologies that can help change the world for the better.

Informational Interviewing 101

<Tagline>Learn more about your profession of choice.</Tagline>

We're almost halfway through the semester. Do you know what you're doing career-wise?

If you're still trying to figure that out, informational interviews are a helpful way to learn more about your options and gain valuable insights for the job hunt. You'll be the one driving the conversation and asking questions, so it's important to know what you’re seeking and having a solid list of questions ready.

Here are some examples of questions you can ask:

What led you to your current job role?

What's a typical workday for you?

What skills are important for this role?

What advice do you have for finding a job in this field?

Are there other professionals you would recommend I speak to?

Do your homework on the company and professional you're speaking to as well. You want to make sure that the questions you have planned are relevant to the position AND give you what you need. You also need to make sure you have a good idea of what your strengths and weaknesses are so you could make an informed decision about the career field.

For the interview itself, keep the conversation open and ask follow-up questions as needed. Make sure that both you and the professional are comfortable, and that you have enough questions to fill the time allotted, typically about 20 minutes max.

Then, once you complete the informational interview (and send a thank you email!) you'll need to think about the responses and what you’ve learned. Did the interview provide a job option you think you'd like? Do you need to up-level your skills in any way? Are the challenges doable for you? Try to do about three informational interviews for each career field you're exploring. At the end of each one, simply ask, “Is there anyone else you’d recommend I speak to about this?”

By taking the time to prepare informational interviews, you’ll have what you need to make your next job market moves. And if you want an opportunity to meet working professionals in real-time, sign up for the DCSA Virtual Information Session on March 13th from 5-6 PM.

I regularly confirm qualifications including education, experience, certificates, and licenses. To gather or verify information, this calls for careful record-keeping and communication with educational institutions, licensing boards, and certifying authorities. I am in charge of keeping thorough records of all credentials, adding up-to-date information to databases and software programs, and keeping an eye on adherence to organizational and legal requirements.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?
My internship as a credentialing specialist was acquired through a unique method that involved a LinkedIn connection and previous work experience. My employer and I first connected on LinkedIn. I got to know her when I worked with her at my previous job. I kept in touch with my employer professionally after we connected on LinkedIn by engaging in part in conversations about healthcare and credentialing. My future employer mentioned the internship possibility for credentialing work within their organization at some time during our professional engagement. I expressed interest in applying for the role as soon as I learned about the internship opportunity. After reviewing my application, my employer scheduled an interview virtually to further assess my qualifications, skills, and fit for the role. I was given an offer for the internship after the interview procedure. I accepted the offer and started getting ready for the internship after going over the agreements and talking about any important specifics.

What resources did you use to find your current experience?
LinkedIn or other social media

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?
The areas of my job and company that I have liked the most are the chances for further education, the cooperative team atmosphere, and the assistance with career development. I feel fulfilled and satisfied with my work generally because of these factors.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?
Through my efforts, I have improved provider satisfaction, facilitated effective processes, ensured compliance, and contributed to organizational success.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?
Seek guidance, insights, and internship possibilities from instructors, former students, family friends, and other acquaintances. One useful tool for locating internship opportunities is networking.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.
My internship as a credentialing specialist has been a precious opportunity that has helped the essential healthcare industry and given me possibilities for practical learning. Getting credit for my internship not only confirms that my efforts are being recognized academically for practical abilities, but it also honors my hard work. Working with the Career Center has been helpful. They have provided me with direction and encouragement as I've traveled through my career.

How to Succeed in Speed Networking

<Tagline>Follow these tips to be a master networker at the next event</Tagline>

The day you've been
    preparing for has arrived.

The doors open, and you get in line. You have your
padfolio and resume in hand. Your outfit is wrinkle free and freshly pressed.

You're ready to go
except there's one problem. You have NO IDEA what you want to say.

Does this sound familiar? Here are five tips so you don't find yourself unprepared for a speed networking event ever again.

Make a Good First Impression. Confidently approach the employer, give good eye
contact (and a firm handshake if you're comfortable with it), and introduce
yourself with a lot of energy and enthusiasm.

Prepare Your Elevator Pitch. This is an important part of your conversation,
so make it count! You'll be telling the employer who you are, what you do, and
what you are hoping for in the interaction. If you want to know more specifics
about what goes into the elevator pitch, you can check out this post
    here.

Focus
    on Relationships. Remember
why you are at this speed networking event: to meet employers and build
relationships. By keeping the conversation relationship-centered and focusing
on a true give-and-take process, you're guaranteed to have a more positive
    experience by helping each other.

Ask Good Questions. Because speed networking is fast-paced by
nature, you might find yourself talking about yourself too much and missing out
on the opportunity to make a meaningful connection. To avoid this from
happening, be ready with a few good questions in mind so that it's a two-way
    conversation. Here are some informational
interview questions to help you get started.

Go in with a Goal in Mind. In order to
assess the quality of the conversation, ask yourself what you'd like to
accomplish by the end of the event. Are you looking for a full-time career
opportunity? A part-time internship? Or informal mentorship? Use the goal you've set to help drive your experience.

Keep these tips in your back pocket and you'll walk away
from the next speed networking event feeling optimistic and encouraged. Need a
place to practice? Check out the CAHSS Career
Connection Social happening on Thursday, March 7 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM.
