Language as personal and communal expression: an interactive zine-making workshop

Dr. Joyhanna Jung Yoo and Shengxiao "Sole" Yu will lead participants through an exploration of their personal relationship to their heritage language(s). The workshop will ask participants to reflect on the relationship of language in their lives as it pertains to identity, family, thought, and more. The workshop aims to bring together students and broader community members to think about the connections between issues of language to broader community and social concerns.

Thursday, October 23, 2025
2-4pm
Location: CADVC Gallery, Fine Arts 105

Attendance is capped at 25 participants. Priority will be given to students.

About the speakers:

Joyhanna "Joy" Yoo (she/they) is a linguistic anthropologist whose work examines the circulation of Korean popular cultural genres with fieldwork based in Seoul, Mexico City, and Los Angeles. Their research examines the meanings generated by language as it pertains to race and gender when cultural genres circulate. Joy has also published on Asian American racialization and linguistic appropriation in mediatized contexts. Her newer work examines the relationship between language loss, grief, and Korean diasporic belonging. They are especially passionate about student-centered teaching, mentorship, and student advocacy.

Shengxiao Yu, known by her nickname Sole, is a speaker, facilitator, writer, and social justice educator. She is the creator of Nectar, a space where she provides political education for the community through giving keynote speeches, facilitating workshops, and providing thought leadership. In 2024, Sole served as the activist-in-residence at the Asian American Studies Center at the University of California, Los Angeles. In this capacity, Sole conducted research to more deeply understand the AAPI electoral landscape and the role of mis- and disinformation. Sole is a writer for the Xin Sheng Project, a platform combating misinformation in the Chinese diaspora community by publishing in-language, progressive articles that shift perspectives and build intergenerational power. As a generation 1.5 Asian American, Sole is also working to build community among her fellow Asian Americans in order to build socio-political power and to lift up her lineage. Sole is inspired by BIPOC activists, grassroots community leaders, and all the intersectional movement ancestors who have paved the way.

||

This event is part of the Reframing Global Asias Conversation Series. For the conversation series this fall, the Global Asias Initiative is hosting guest speakers Shengxiao "Sole" Yu and Dr. Joyhanna Jung Yoo for a series of workshops & lectures.

Writing Histories of Reproductive Healthcare Now

Carole McCann, Professor, Gender, Women's, + Sexuality Studies
Fall 2025 Dresher Center Residential Faculty Fellow

Planned Parenthood of Maryland (PPMD) is a fascinating site for considering complexities of US reproductive healthcare history. Founded in 1927, PPMD was the first affiliate established in a racially and religiously segregated southern state. Yet it always served both Black and white women, while its volunteers, doctors, and donors were largely drawn from Baltimore's Jewish community. This talk will consider the question of what it means to write about the history of reproductive health organizations in the current moment. Dr. McCann is particularly interested in thinking through how the ongoing attacks on reproductive rights and health providers might inform interpretation of the last time this work and organization was excluded from mainstream medicine and social welfare. In addition, she will consider the problem of limited archives: What do we lose when social justice organizations are so busy doing the work, they do not preserve their records of the work? What strategies can help us find traces in them in the historical record? And what preservation work might we owe to the history of our time?

UNAPOLOGETIC: Street Art as Activism and Liberation

Johanna Toruño is a Salvadoran-born, community-taught visual artist who uses the streets as a public platform and gallery. Raised in San Salvador until being displaced to the US at age 10, she is inspired by her experiences growing up in the aftermath of the civil war to use poster work as a medium to self-express and center a queer migrant lens. As she explains, “political art is the people’s art as it has been used for many generations.” In this talk, Toruño will discuss how she utilizes street art as a tool of resistance.

Her bold imagery and statements, often adorned in lush florals, celebrate queer, working class, and immigrant communities. Through her work, Toruño challenges social norms and centers messages of self-reflection and self-acceptance. Using a soft aesthetic with colors that remind her of home, Toruño brings storytelling and a chance for her audience to re-learn and decolonize their own self to accessible spaces. Her political and social messages highlight topics of reimagining norms, and the joy of holding space for collective liberation. Johanna is a TED speaker and lecturer at Universities like Stanford, Princeton, Columbia, and others. Johanna's work has been featured in The New York Times, Teen Vogue, NPR, Nylon, and more. Johanna lives and works in Los Angeles with her partner and 2 dogs. If she's not wheat pasting, she's cooking.

We break everyone out into randomized small groups of around 4 or 5 people, give them a discussion prompt, and give them about 20 minutes or so to discuss in their randomized groups. We will do multiple rounds of small group discussion with different groups and different prompts. This gives everyone an opportunity to meet new people and hear a variety of voices and perspectives throughout the night. Finally, we will end the night with a special guest Q&A!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latine/x Heritage Month!

 <Tagline>Honoring Our Hispanic & Latine/x Communities</Tagline>

Celebrating Hispanic and Latine/x Heritage Month at UMBC

During National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 to October 15), we recognize the contributions and celebrate the vibrant presence of Hispanic and Latine/x Americans in the United States. At UMBC and The Mosaic Center, we honor the heritage, resilience, and cultural richness of these communities, and uplift the stories that have shaped and continue to shape our national identity.

Our Hispanic and Latine/x communities have profoundly and positively influenced our country through their deep-rooted commitments to family, faith, hard work, and service. They have enriched our shared culture through centuries-old traditions and the vibrant, multiethnic, multicultural customs they carry, which continue to evolve.

So why does Hispanic Heritage Month begin in the middle of September?
The celebration begins on September 15, which marks the independence anniversaries of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In the days that follow, Mexico (September 16), Chile (September 18), and Belize (September 21) also commemorate their independence. In addition to national independence celebrations, this month also includes days that honor cultural heritage and indigenous roots. October 12 is observed in various parts of Latin America as a day to recognize and reflect on the region’s rich cultural diversity. It is known as the “Day of Respect for Cultural Diversity” in Argentina and the “Day of Decolonization” in Bolivia, reminding us of the importance of honoring Indigenous histories and continuing efforts toward justice and representation.

Understanding Terms: Hispanic vs. Latino/a/e/x
The term Hispanic generally refers to people from Spanish-speaking countries, including those with heritage from Spain. Latino, Latina, Latine, or Latinx refer to people with cultural and/or ancestral ties to Latin America and the Caribbean, regardless of language, and typically do not include Spain. Some may identify with one term, both, or neither, and it’s important to respect and affirm individual identities across the diaspora.

Curious about the term Latinx? Learn more here or here.

The Power of Community

This month is not only about celebration, it’s also about connection. At a time when many of our communities, especially our Latine/x & Hispanic community, continue to face threats, erasure, and growing feelings of unsafety, being in community is essential. Celebrating and engaging in community together is a powerful form of resistance, healing, and joy. It is through shared spaces that we find strength, validation, and the opportunity to uplift one another.

We encourage all members of the UMBC community to come together, whether by attending events, sharing stories, or supporting identity-based spaces. If you are looking for community, you are not alone. The Mosaic Center and Student Belonging offer intentional spaces for belonging, cultural heritage events, and opportunities for dialogue and celebration throughout the year.
