Teams named for American College Cricket Championship

<Tagline>UMBC and 30 other colleges to vie for the Chanderpaul Trophy</Tagline>

From DreamCricket.com:

Twenty nine US colleges and two Canadian colleges will compete in the 2011 edition of the Chanderpaul Trophy, American College Cricket announced on Friday.

In addition to the 31 contenders, two guest teams - Excelsior High School of Jamaica, and Presentation College of Trinidad & Tobago, will play games that will not count towards the championship. The teams will be split into four conferences with one of the tournament's top four seeds - University of Southern California, Auburn University, Rutgers University and North Carolina State University - playing in each conference.

The tournament, which began in 2009 with five teams quickly grew to twenty teams in 2010.

"Many new college clubs are joining American College Cricket. We are assisting in the formation of cricket clubs and developing teams at Universities all across the USA and Canada," Lloyd Jodah, ACC President, told CricInfo last summer. Those efforts appear to have paid off as evidenced by the number of teams in 2011.

The participating teams are - University of Iowa, UPenn, Rutgers, Texas Tech, Ohio State University, University of Central Florida, College of Wooster, York University (2010 champions), Texas A&M, University of Florida, Penn State, UMBC, University of Tampa, University of Minnesota, NJIT, St. Cloud State, North Carolina State, Montgomery College (2009 champions), Auburn, Florida International, McGill, George Mason, University of South Florida, Thunderbird School of Global Management, Boston University, GWU, NYU-Poly, Cleveland State, University of Southern California, University of Houston and Florida Atlantic.

The Championship will take place in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, from March 15 to 20, at the Central Broward Cricket Stadium and side fields, and at Brian Piccolo Park. For live coverage and webcasts, please visit AmericanCollegeCricket.com.

A: Last year I transfered to UMBC, and in hopes to be more involved I joined the Student Government Association. I started off as a blogger but towards the end of the semester I was asked to take on some additional responsibility, specifically being the lead on Project Black and Gold. At the time, I was a little unsure of the requirements of the project...I agreed nonetheless. In the coming weeks I found out exactly what I signed up for and asked "what did I get myself into?"

The end goal of the project was to install black and gold colored banners around campus to inspire school spirit. It turned out that Project Black and Gold was the latest incarnation of a project which had been years in the making and had failed at least two times before. Now it was up to me to make sure it didn't go down hill yet again. I found myself working with other students, administrators, an outside company, and facilities' staff to guarantee the success of the project.

To me, the hardest part of the process was the interaction with so many new people. I find myself to be a quiet person and enjoy working behind the scenes. In this case, standing on the sidelines wasn't an option so I had to embrace my role. I learned that if needed, I could take the lead and reach out to necessary people. After some nervousness, frustration, and a whole lot of new faces the banners were installed prior to Fall 2010.

Q: How have you applied what you learned?

A: This experience opened me up to a lot of new opportunities and just as many new faces. I'm less hesitant to reach out to the necessary people in dealing with projects and other tasks. It is experience I can use almost anywhere in my life whether inside or outside of the classroom.

Q: Do you have any advice you can pass along to others?

A: I'd encourage others who are introverted to reach out when it is necessary. There are times when you won't be able to get things done if you don't speak up.

Free Food Through Spring Break

If you always seem to miss out on free food, I’ve done the leg work and compiled a list of events where you can grab something to eat for free between now and spring break. If you’re like me, you don’t want to go grocery shopping anymore. And for meal plan holders, save a meal and enjoy something for free.

SEB will be hosting Breakfast and Bingo in the Sports Zone between 9 and 11pm (yes, breakfast after dinner) every other week starting Tuesday, March 1st. The future dates are March 15th, April 9th, April 19th, and May 3rd. It’s free to play and free to eat! You can also win some sweet prizes. Click here.

The Veg meeting will be held on Thursdays from 6 to 7pm in the Student Org Space starting this Thursday, March 3rd. They will be serving free food at each meeting as they discuss upcoming events such as the Worldwide Vegan Bake Sale, Meatout, and the Baltimore VegFest. Click here.

Immediately after that, the Guitar Hero Competition will kick off in the Gameroom at 7pm. Free pizza will be served, and competitors will go head-to-head and fret-for-fret trying to win tickets to a Rams Head Live concert of their choice. The Gameroom will be renting projection screens for the event. Click here.

Thursday must be the day to eat, because at 8pm Cake and Karaoke will commence in the Sports Zone. Sing a song and enjoy freshly baked cake, the perfect dessert for your veggie entree and helping of pizza from earlier! Click here.

Tuesday, March 8th is Fat Tuesday right here in Flat Tuesdays (they should just call the pub Fat Tuesday, at least for that day!). They will be celebrating their most beloved day of the year with a delicious selection of food and drinks between 7 and 9pm. Click here.

Then, right before Spring Break on March 17th, Shamrockapalooza will be serving free Irish-themed dishes in the Sports Zone between 7 and 9pm. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia will be screened and craft tables will give you the opportunity to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in style. Click here.

Stayed tuned for more updates about free grub on campus.
