UMBC Recognized with Regional NRHH Building Block Award

<Tagline>Award represents most improved chapter in region</Tagline>

Every year, schools from six states in the central Atlantic region gather together at the No Frills Business Conference to recognize the most outstanding amongst them. This year, UMBC was one of those outstanding schools.

The Central Atlantic Affiliate for College and University Residence Halls (or CAACURH) presents a number of awards every year to residence hall associations, National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH) chapters, and individuals within those organizations for exceptional efforts to improve the quality of on-campus life. At the 2011 No Frills Conference at the Miami University of Ohio, UMBC's Chapter of NRHH submitted a bid for the Regional NRHH Building Block of the Year award. This award is presented to the one NRHH Chapter within Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, the District of Columbia, and Qatar that has made the most improvements to its structure and involvement on campus and beyond. Despite being up against two competing bids, UMBC was announced as the winner of this award Saturday night.

UMBC's NRHH Chapter has made significant improvements over the course of the last semester, including:

A new website, available at http://www.umbc.edu/rsa/nrhh

Increased publicity through myUMBC

Increased involvement at regional conferences through presentations

Increased service opportunities, including the Adopt-a-Family program conducted in November and December

Increased numbers of Of The Month nominations; increased quality of those nominations; and increased numbers of Regional and National award winners

Improvements to the Chapter Constitution and planned addition of bylaws

Increased membership (applications for this semester open March 6th!)

Improved relationship with the Resident Student Association

...and much more. With this victory at the Regional Level, UMBC now has the opportunity to bid for the national award, at the annual conference for the National Association of College & University Residence Halls, Inc., hosted this year at the Western Illinois University in late May.

For more information about what UMBC NRHH has achieved this past year, see the attached bid.

NRHH President Lauren Hartsky elected to Regional office

<Tagline>Elected Saturday as Regional Associate Director for NRHH</Tagline>

Every year at its annual No Frills Business Conference, the Central Atlantic Affiliate of College and University Residence Halls elects its Regional Board of Directors for the next academic year. At this year's conference hosted at the Miami University of Ohio, UMBC NRHH President Lauren Hartsky successfully bid for the position of Associate Director for NRHH and Recognition.

The Central Atlantic Affiliate of College and University Residence Halls (or CAACURH) is one of eight regions within the National Association for College and University Residence Halls, Inc. (NACURH), the largest student-run organization in the world. The CAACURH region includes schools from Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, West Virginia, Ohio, the District of Columbia, and Qatar, and provides support for residence hall associations (such as UMBC's Resident Student Association) and chapters of the National Residence Hall Honorary by providing lines of communication between schools and recognizing individuals and organizations for the work they do.

Lauren is currently President of UMBC's NRHH Chapter. A Resident Assistant since Fall of 2008, Lauren was inducted into NRHH in Fall 2008 for her outstanding service in her first semester as an RA and to the Resident Student Association, where she served as the organizing chair for Midnight Breakfast and represented UMBC at the annual CAACURH Regional Conference at Stevenson University. Lauren was elected Secretary of the Chapter in Spring 2009, and has served on the Chapter's executive board ever since.

As Regional Associate Director for NRHH, Lauren will be responsible for coordinating resources, communication, and programs between the dozens of NRHH Chapters within the CAACURH region. This includes chairing the Regional OTM Committee, which reviews Of The Month award nominations submitted by member schools for recognition at the regional level. Lauren will also serve on NACURH's and NRHH's National Board of Directors, allowing her to influence the direction of the Honorary across the country and world.

The last time UMBC hosted a member of the Regional Board of Directors was in the 2007-2008 academic year, when Randy Lawrence served as Regional Communications Coordinator for Special Projects. This is the first time that UMBC has hosted a member of the National Board of Directors.

At the conference on Saturday, Lauren was also awarded a Cougar Pride Pin. This pin, named after the regional mascot, Campbell the Cougar, is awarded by current members of the Regional Board of Directors in recognition of outstanding service and dedication to the region. Lauren received her pin from the current holder of her new office, Vicki Forcina of the University of Toledo, in thanks for the dedication Lauren has shown to the CAACURH region and its NRHH chapters.

On behalf of the National Residence Hall Honorary, congratulations to Lauren, and the best of luck in your new position!

(Attached is Lauren's bid for the AD-NRHH position, which was presented to the Regional Boardroom this weekend)

Make Your Own Bulgogi (Korean BBQ)

Hey everyone! I have to go back to my roots when it comes to the winter time. I get to be home with my family, make great food, and well, Asian cuisine has to be at the top of my favorites list! I am Chinese and growing up, I always had rice or noodles with family style dishes to eat with them and honestly, there are times when all I crave is rice paired with delicious meats and vegetables. Though I am not Korean (but I love their cuisine), I’ve always wanted to try making Korean BBQ at home and I did! If you’ve ever been to Honey Pig or Shin Chon (both are on Rt. 40- Baltimore National Pike), it’s that style of cooking in your very own kitchen! It’s very simple and a great way to satisfy that rice craving. No more dialing for take out, try this recipe at home or in your apartment!

Bulgogi- Korean marinated beef with onions

Makes 4-6 servings Prep time: 10 minutes

Marinade time: at least 30 minutes

Cook time: 10-15 minutes

Be sure to look out for my tips along the way! They will be starred (*)

Ingredients:

½ – ¾ lb of beef tenderloin or beef rib eye (sliced thin)

*You can find this at H-MART or LOTTE (both on Rt. 40- right off of exit 15B on 695) or if you find a great cut of meat in your local market, ask your butcher to slice it thin for you! If you don’t like red meat, you can substitute this dish with chicken.

1 medium sized yellow onion or half a jumbo yellow onion, sliced (see picture below)

3 cloves of garlic, minced

Half of a Fuji apple, diced

*You may substitute the apple with Asian pear, a whole kiwi, ¼ of a mango, or a small chunk of pineapple. The fruit helps tenderize and break down the meat while adding sweetness to it- trust me, it’s a must!

5 Tbsp of soy sauce (see picture below)

*Available at all local grocery markets- specialty/international foods aisle

2 Tbsp of rice vinegar (see picture below)

*Available at all local grocery markets- specialty/international foods aisle

3 Tbsp of sesame oil (see picture below)

*Available at all local grocery markets- specialty/international foods aisle

2 Tbsp of Chinese cooking wine (see picture below)

*Available at H-MART, LOTTE or any Asian specialty foods market

1 Tbsp of salt

3 Tbsp of sugar

4 pieces of ginger root, sliced (optional)

*If you enjoy the flavor of ginger, go ahead and mince it and incorporate it with the marinade!

¼ cup of scallions, diced (optional)

¼ cup of chopped cilantro (optional)

All the sauces used for the bulgogi marinade!

Directions:

1. In a large mixing bowl, combine all above ingredients together. Reserve half the scallions and all of the cilantro for the very end.

2. Using your hands, mix the ingredients together, making sure that all of the marinade is coating all of the meat and onions.

3. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let it stand in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.

*The longer the marinade sits, the better it gets. I recommend preparing the marinade and combining it well in advance. For example, prepare it the night before and letting it stand in the refrigerator overnight imparts a lot of flavor into the meat. I chose to make it in the morning and letting it marinade all day (about 5-7 hours).

The meat after 5-7 hours of marinating in the fridge!

4. Take the bowl out of the refrigerator and let it stand for about 10-15 minutes prior to cooking.

*This allows the meat to come to room temperature— super cold meat on super hot skillet shocks the meat and ends up in tough bulgogi!

5. While letting the meat rest at room temperature, heat a large, non-stick skillet to medium-high heat. Coat the skillet with a light colored oil (such as canola, vegetable, or sunflower oil).

Coating the skillet with canola oil

6. Sear the meat and onion mixture for about 10 minutes until all pieces are cooked through—brown and slightly charred on all sides. The onions should still have a bit of a bite to them!

* I recommend using tongs to cook the meat and onions.

Dropping the meat and onion mixture into the hot pan

I can’t wait!

Almost DONE! =)

7. Serve with rice, green leaf lettuce (to wrap your bulgogi in!), and your favorite vegetables. Enjoy!

Cartoon of the Day: Booming prospects

The changing events in Egypt will likely have historic implications both for the country itself and the Middle East in general.

For decades, this tense and very combustible region of the world has been grappling with a dangerous standoff between Israel and Arab states. Egypt has been central solving the problems between the two warring sides for 3 reasons:

It is the most populous Arab state

It borders on Israel

Though it fought wars with Israel in the past, it has a peace treaty with the country today.

While uncertainty rocks the region, the hope of long term peace is on hold, as the cartoon above points out (cartoon by KAL).

Hopefully, the tense situation will resolve for the benefit of Egyptian citizens…and in time for all the citizens of the Middle East.

C U Later, C-SPAN

Believe it or not, there are some people who actually watch C-SPAN.

A few of us at USDemocrazy are included, so there were mixed emotions when we heard they missed an opportunity to make their coverage just a little bit more exciting.

Since the mid 1990s, the network has been trying to gain approval to use their own cameras in a new place on Capitol Hill. The House of Representatives does not allow C-SPAN to record its gatherings. Last week, Rep. John Boehner became the latest Speaker of the House to deny C-SPAN’s request:

I believe the American people — and the dignity and decorum of the United States House of Representatives — are best served by the current system of televised proceedings provided by the House Recording Studio

The video broadcast currently shown by C-SPAN comes from cameras operated by Congress itself. This setup only allows certain angles and avoids showing the reactions of Representatives when their colleagues are speaking. In the past, members of Congress have disagreed over the use of the cameras.

Every Speaker since Newt Gingrich has banned C-SPAN from using their own equipment in the chamber. There was a clear sense of frustration in the network’s statement on the most recent rejection:

We’re disappointed to learn that despite 32 years of experience with televising its sessions and in an age of ubiquitous cameras in political life, the House of Representatives has chosen not to allow C-SPAN’s cameras into its chamber to cover its sessions

Where do you stand on cameras in Congress?

BALTIMORE (Feb. 7, 2011) — Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) [NYSE: SAI] and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) today announced plans for a statewide cyber competition and conference designed to attract more students and young professionals to pursue careers in cybersecurity. The Maryland Cyber Challenge and Conference (MDC3), to be held Oct. 21-22, 2011, will strengthen Maryland’s position as a cybersecurity leader by bringing teams of current and prospective cybersecurity professionals together to develop the skills and techniques needed to protect vital information systems.

Founders of the event include SAIC, UMBC, the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA), the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development (DBED), and the Tech Council of Maryland (TCM).

“I am so proud to join in celebrating the first-ever Maryland Cyber Challenge and Conference,” said Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley. “Our State is poised to lead the way in cybersecurity. From our world-class facilities, federal agencies and military commands that are engaged in cybersecurity work to our vibrant and growing private sector and talented universities, we are uniquely positioned to lead the way to protect and defend the nation’s digital infrastructure. I’d like to thank SAIC and UMBC for recognizing the importance of preparing the next generation for the jobs of the future.”

Orientation sessions for teams in each of three divisions — high school, collegiate and industry and government professionals — will be held at UMBC in March and April. Two qualifying rounds will be conducted online using SAIC’s Cyber Network Exercise System (CyberNEXS), a scalable training, exercise and certification system.

“SAIC is thrilled to be a co-founder of the inaugural MDC3,” said Larry Cox, SAIC senior vice president and business unit general manager. “This is an opportunity to attract students and young professionals to cyber-oriented degree programs and careers, expanding Maryland’s reach as a leader in cybersecurity innovation.”

The final rounds of the challenge will be held at the conference as part of Maryland’s activities to recognize National Cyber Security Awareness Month. High school teams will compete in a cyber defense challenge, while collegiate and professional teams will go head-to-head in a “capture the flag” scenario. Winners of each division will receive their trophies and awards at a formal ceremony at UMBC.

“Maryland colleges and universities have a critical role to play in preparing students for careers in cybersecurity and related fields,” said UMBC President Freeman Hrabowski. "This event will support those efforts by encouraging the development of valuable cybersecurity skills in a competitive setting.”

The October cyber conference will feature exhibitor booths, keynote speeches and workshops conducted by nationally recognized industry leaders.

“NCSA is proud to be a co-founder of this event,” said Michael Kaiser, NCSA executive director. “The nation is in need of a new generation of cybersecurity professionals. This challenge is an excellent way to inspire young people to pursue careers, and perhaps ignite a new passion for, protecting our valuable digital assets.”

During MDC3, students and young professionals will have an opportunity to network with cybersecurity leaders while learning about careers in cyber technology. The conference agenda will be oriented toward students, parents, and professionals from academia, industry and government.

“DBED is pleased to team with SAIC and UMBC to prepare today’s students for tomorrow’s jobs,” said Maryland Secretary of Business & Economic Development Christian S. Johansson, adding, “We launched CyberMaryland last year to position our state as the epicenter for cybersecurity and this effort demonstrates that everything cyber happens right here in Maryland.”

“For more than a year, the Tech Council of Maryland (TCM) has been engaged with the cybersecurity industry, our members and our partners in Maryland to produce a series of events and conversations through the CyberMaryland Forum,” said Renée M. Winsky, TCM CEO. “Working with SAIC and others on MDC3 only furthers the breadth and opportunity for Maryland’s bourgeoning cybersecurity industry.”
