We recently received the happy news that UMBC has once again—for the 16th year in a row!—been named to
ModernThink’s list of Great Colleges to Work For. In this annual survey of faculty and staff and analysis of institutional demographics, policies, and practices,
UMBC again stood out among the nearly 200 colleges and universities that participated, one of a handful to be recognized in nine out of 10 categories.
This recognition matters, and not (just) because of what it shows the outside world about UMBC—that this is a workplace where job satisfaction, pride, and faculty and staff well-being are strong, and that we are a community that values shared governance, inclusion, and belonging. Fundamentally, it matters because it is a powerful reminder for ourselves—heard in the voices of our own staff and faculty—of how truly distinctive UMBC is, and what a difference that makes.

Don't Take the Bait! How to Spot a Phishing Scam
Cybersecurity Awareness Month
Hello UMBC Community,
In the digital world, Phishing is one of the most used forms of cyber trickery where attackers impersonate trusted sources to deceive you into handing over credentials or personal information. These attacks come in various forms. Learning about them will help you not fall victim to those emails.
Phishing attacks are emails that may look like important messages but are actually crafted by cyber criminals. The good news? With the right knowledge, you can foil their tricks and keep yourself and UMBC safe. These are some tips on how you can recognize phishing emails:
Requests for Your Password: UMBC will never ask for your password. Never submit your password on Google forms or Monday.com forms. Your password is for your eyes only!
Unexpected Calendar Invitations: Watch out for calendar invites from unknown senders. Delete them and never click suspicious links inside.
Fraudulent Offers: Be wary of unsolicited offers for gift cards or jobs that are too promising. Do not send your personal or financial information to anyone who requests it over email or text. Real job postings are on Handshake only!
Unexpected Attachments or Links: Did someone send you a weird file or link you weren't expecting? Is a link in an email suspiciously short or strange-looking? If it feels off, don't click or download it.
A Sense of Urgency: Phishing emails often try to rush you into action, like claiming your account will be "deactivated" if you don't click a link immediately. Always be suspicious of urgent, high-pressure requests.
Poor Grammar and Spelling: While not always a giveaway, many phishing emails contain noticeable spelling errors or awkward phrasing.
What to do if you get a suspicious email:
If you suspect an email is a phishing attempt, do not reply, click any links, or open any attachments. Instead, forward the email immediately to the security team at security@umbc.edu. Your report helps protect everyone!

Retrievers, listen up — Six cyber scams you do not want to fall for.
Number one: Random Duo Push notifications.
If you didn't log in, don't hit accept. That's literally letting an attacker walk into your account.
Number two: Free gift cards, pianos, and tools in your inbox.
Yeah, no. If they ask you to 'send cash first,' it's a total scam. Also, your professors and the administration are not going to ask you to buy gift cards for them.
Number three: Job offers that sound like, 'Work two hours a week, get $500.'
If it's that easy, it's fake. Real jobs are on Handshake.
Number four: Phishing forms.
UMBC will never ask for your password, Duo code, social security number, or birthday through Monday.com or Google Forms. If you see that, report it faster than you sprint to class after hitting snooze.
Number five: Copy this command.
If you get an error on a website that asks you to copy a command to the Run menu, PowerShell, or Terminal, don't do it! This is an attacker trying to compromise and take control of your machine.
And number six: 'Your UMBC account is about to be deactivated.'
Your account isn't going anywhere. Don't click the link.
Stay alert online, don't get scammed.

The Meyerhoff Scholarship Program is hosting this year's second Campus Connection on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, from 11 AM–1 PM in the UC Ballroom!
Don't worry about dressing up; regular school clothes are fine.
As with the previous Campus Connects, this event is open to all STEM students, whether you're curious about summer research, exploring graduate or medical schools, or just want to learn more about opportunities at top universities. You'll have the chance to connect directly with representatives from institutions across the country and hear about their programs, research, and pathways for students at all levels. In the past, these connections have actually helped people get into certain programs, so I really encourage you to attend if you're available--you could stop by at any time and stay as long as you'd like. Also, be sure to introduce yourself (name, major, year, degree, and career interests) to representatives so they could best help you.
Following last week's REU Workshop, this is a great opportunity to ask representatives whether their universities host REU (Research Experiences for Undergraduates) programs or other ways to get involved in research.

Part I of UMBC FDC Introduction to Generative AI in Teaching Series
12-1PM ET Monday, October 6, online
This first session of the FDC series on AI and teaching introduces the basics of generative AI and its implications for teaching and learning. It focuses on AI literacy by examining what these tools are, what they can and cannot do, basic prompting, ethical and responsible use, and how they may impact classroom practice. Faculty will see short demos of ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and have time for Q&A.

The FDC is co-sponsoring the series of three workshops facilitated by John Schumacher, Professor of Sociology, Anthropology and Public Health and a USM Generative AI Pedagogy Fellow for 2025-26. Whether you have already begun exploring AI for your teaching and for student learning, are an AI-skeptic, or are somewhere in between, joining Dr. Schumacher and your UMBC colleagues for these hands-on workshops will help you to deepen your understanding of how AI works, some of the ethical concerns of AI-usage, and when and how to use which Gen AI tools. Building on Generative AI in Teaching I, this interactive session highlights applied skills and practical use cases. Faculty will practice effective prompting, explore discipline-specific scenarios, and consider assignment design strategies. Examples will touch on advanced features (custom GPTs/GEMs, Canvas Mode, Deep Research Mode, agent mode) related to teaching.
I'm Not Teaching with Generative AI, But What Do I Still Need to Know?

This session highlights what faculty need to know, even if they are not adopting AI in their own teaching. Topics include basic Gen AI literacy, a critical examination of student use of AI tools, equity and access, ethical concerns, credible sources of Gen AI information, and implications for assessment and pedagogy..
