[RESPOT] Relationships Unfiltered: The Good, the Bad, and the Toxic
Is it okay to ask your partner to not be friends with people you are not comfortable with?
How should you handle it when your partner gets defensive or emotional when you try to give them feedback?
How can I make sure I'm respecting my partner's boundaries?
Can I trust relationship advice from influencers on social media?
It is common to feel confused about topics like boundaries, expectations, and communication. Relationships are complicated! Bring your questions and join a discussion with UMBC students, faculty, and staff.
We'll start with an activity where you tell us - is this red or green flag behavior? Then, we'll shift into a Q&A with our panelists.

"Without Fear" Theme Overview:
As young people in this era, we face tremendous uncertainty and fear about the environments around us. It feels like we've inherited a responsibility to a world whose problems we didn't make. As if our futures have been co-opted by systems that don't have our best interest in mind. As artists, we are limited by time, money, and resources. We worry about whether making art will allow us to survive, when the whole purpose is to enjoy just making art.
So we ask: If fear no longer limited you, how would you imagine, build, or live in the future? Who are you without limitation, without fear?
Registration for Spring 2026 is just around the corner which means that you will want to plan to meet with your assigned major advisor in order to discuss your academic plan and to remove your advising hold.
Keep in mind that advising is MANDATORY every semester and must be completed prior to registration for the upcoming term.
Check your myUMBC email (sent today -- October 2nd) for your advisor assignment and further instructions. Subject Line: "IMPORTANT: Advising Assignment for **SPRING 2026** Registration." Updated advising assignments can also be found on your myUMBC profile.

Newly or recently declared life science majors who do not have a listed advisor assignment should contact
CNMSAdvising@umbc.edu for support.
Most importantly, please follow any instructions provided by your assigned advisor regarding their procedure for scheduling an advising appointment and the deadlines that they set. Most faculty advisors begin offering advising appointments closer to the release of the spring schedule (October 20th).
The Office for Academic & Pre-Professional Advising has openings available for Winter Orientation Advisors! Advisors meet with incoming undergraduate students VIRTUALLY during the month of January in one-on-one sessions to plan out and register for classes. No previous experience is required, and we will provide all training necessary!
Besides compensation, this is a rare chance for graduate students to gain professional and interpersonal experience. Depending on your field, your time as a student may not open you up to many client-facing interactions, and this is a pathway to gaining that experience. If you are considering a career in academia, meanwhile, advising experience is highly sought-after in faculty openings.
Advisors are eligible to be compensated at the rate of $100 per afternoon session and $50 per evening or morning session, with the opportunity to work several sessions during the month. Although there are only a few days during which help is needed in January, advisors in good standing may be invited back to participate in our much larger Summer program afterwards. Participants are also eligible to earn the Orientation Advisor microcredential! See more info here:

Compressed gas safety
All,
We had several tanks of gas topple in the storage cage last evening. As I am continuing to work with environmental safety about proper storage and identification, it was apparent that numerous tanks of CO2 were returned to the storage cage with out their enclosure caps. Neither the warehouse or the distributors will take tanks back with out the top it came supplied with. Your laboratories will accrue demurrage charges until the lids are provided.
These caps weigh 5 to 8 pounds a piece, they are not trash. Not only are these important for your labs finances, moving tanks around the building without having the valves protected is a serious safety issue.

Spring 2026 Registration - Advising
Appointment Information for Current Students:
Recently, all current UMBC students received notification of an "Advising Hold" on their UMBC account.
Students must meet with an advisor to have the hold lifted in order to register
for Spring courses.
Spring Registration for undergraduate
students will run October 28 - November 14. Your
specific date will be based on the number of credits you have earned. Students
should plan to meet with an advisor a few weeks before their earliest
registration time.
Please read below for more information on how to receive advising clearance:
Computer Science and Engineering Pre-Majors:
Pre-Majors and all first semester transfer students
should schedule an advising appointment with their COEIT advisor. Your COEIT advisor is listed on your
myUMBC Profile. Please click on your advisor's name to access your their appointment calendar.
Computer Science and Engineering Full Majors:All Computer Science, Computer Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering students who have passed their gateway in the last year have been assigned a staff advisor and should have received an email recently titled "Important Spring 2026 Advising Information." Please follow the directions in that email.
All post-gateway Chemical Engineering students as well as post-gateway Mechanical Engineering students previously assigned a faculty advisor, and post-gateway CSEE students who chose to remain with their faculty advisor should reach our to their faculty advisor for advising. Faculty advisor information is available on your
myUMBC Profile.
Information Systems & BTA Majors:
All IS & BTA new freshmen (started in Fall 2025) have a COEIT advisor listed in their
myUMBC Profile
. You should schedule an appointment with that advisor.
All IS & BTA transfers students and returning students can consult the IS/BTA Advising Information here.
TL;DR: Please reach out to the COEIT advisor listed on your
myUMBC Profile if you have any questions about how to get advising clearance for the Spring semester. If you don't have an advisor listed please reach out to
coeitadvising@umbc.edu.
If you are changing your major to a major outside the
College of Engineering and Information Technology, please contact the
respective department of your new major for advising appointment instructions. Please
remember to complete a Declaration
of Major form for your new major.
Winter 2026 Session
Winter registration will begin October 13. Students do not need to meet with an advisor
prior to registering for winter courses unless they have questions or concerns.
If you intend to take a course off-campus during the winter, a Verification
of Transferability Form is required in advance of
taking the course.
New Students Admitted for the Spring Semester:
Newly admitted students for the Spring semester may not
register for courses until Winter Orientation. Please sign up for Orientation here.
