<ThumbnailAltText>A graphic flyer for a graduate student outing at Dave & Buster's, organized by UMBC OGSL and GSA.

The top of the flyer features the UMBC OGSL and GSA logos. Below these, a large, stylized illustration of a purple handheld gaming device serves as a frame for the main title: "GRAD OUTING: DAVE & BUSTER'S" in a pixelated, retro-gaming font.

Key event details are listed in the center and bottom sections:

Date: SAT, APRIL 4

Call to Action: RSVP TODAY!

Context: "We're taking the Graduate Student Appreciation Week celebration off-campus!"

Perks: A blue jagged speech bubble on the right side reads "FOOD PROVIDED".

Contact Info: For more information, users are directed to email Mitchell Everett at meverett1@umbc.edu.

The background is a deep blue, decorated with light purple geometric shapes and two additional gaming controllers at the bottom corners. The overall design uses a pixel-art and vaporwave-inspired aesthetic with purple, blue, and white accents.</ThumbnailAltText>

The Dresher Center's CURRENTS: Humanities Work Now lunchtime series showcases exciting new work in the humanities in a dynamic and inter-disciplinary setting.

Keeping the Girls in Stitches: Seventeenth-Century Women’s Embroidery as Biblical Commentary

Michele Osherow, Associate Professor, English
Spring 2026 Residential Faculty Fellow

This research considers ways early modern women used their needles to engage with biblical text and characters, offering up alternative readings of narratives and challenging dominant interpretations head-on. Women’s embroidered pictures of the Bible were not bound to scriptural accuracy; they freely inserted characters into stitched scenes or juxtaposed narratives: what emerges is a stunning complexity of material very much in keeping with the textual intricacies of the Bible itself. I’ll demonstrate this with a few focused examples, showing how the needlework riffs on biblical narrative, religious commentary, and addresses social and political interests.
