Islam-o-phobia: The burning issue

This kind of sounds like a joke:

What do you get when you mix a bad moustache, a Koran, some matches and The Internet?

You get riots and death…and this is no joke.

The moustache belongs to The crazy Pastor Terry Jones of Florida. Some months ago his congregation threatened to burn a Koran as a protest against the violent nature of the religion (see our previous coverage of it here).

His inflammatory flaming stunt was halted when outcry and pleas from many ( includingThe Pope) helped to change his limited mind.

Then, recently it was learned his equally kooky kongregation decided to burn a Koran in a less public ceremony.

When the word of the incident was revealed, Muslims worldwide were outraged.

Then, a group of unfriendly religious radicals in Afghanistan started trouble. The Taliban used the Koran-burning as a rallying cry for anti-west protests.

For the past 3 days angry mobs have protested the burning resulting in deadly riots. On Friday 9 people were killed and 80 injured in Afghanistan when rioters stormed a UN compound.

Now the protests and violence has continued.

So here’s our question… who is to blame?

Do you blame Terry Jones and his followers for this irresponsible behavior? Or maybe it’s the Taliban who are inciting the citizens in Afghanistan to blame the west as a whole for the actions of a few? Or are the rioters to blame for the results of their action? Or a combination of them all?

Please share your thoughts!

UMBC's Collin Wojciechowski Named USM Student Regent

UMBC sophomore Collin Wojciechowski (Real People Profile here) is going to be taking on some huge responsibilities in the coming year. In a state university system with 13 institutions, 168,000 students and an operating budget of over $4 billion, he's going to be the one student with a voice and a vote on the official governing board. Collin has been appointed by Governor O’Malley to be the University System of Maryland's Student Regent for 2011-2012.

The Regents have tremendous power to support and improve higher education in this state. Their decisions on matters including tuition and fees, the hiring of university presidents and the creation of new schools and programs will affect students for generations. Having the Student Regent position filled by a UMBC student creates opportunities for all other UMBC students to share their concerns and priorities with somebody with a voice and a vote where it counts.

Collin will be the third UMBC student to serve in the role. Phil Shockley (2003-2004) and Josh Michael (2008-2009) also served while they were UMBC undergraduates.

Collin is an approachable, self-deprecating person who has devoted himself to studying, writing about and helping to shape state policy. In high school he served as the student member of his county Board of Education. At UMBC he's a Sondheim Scholar, SGA's Director of Government and Community Affairs, and Opinion Editor of The Retriever Weekly. Last fall he was a student in the course on social change I teach with Delana Gregg (that's POLI 205/AMST 205/SOCY 205, for those of you about to start registering for fall 2011 courses). He's going to be a great ambassador and resource for UMBC. Congratulations, Collin!

Correspondence Comedy

We here at USdemocrazy enjoy a good laugh, and we were surprised to see that congress does too.

Wednesday was the Congressional Correspondence Dinner in Washington. Congressmen stand up and try their hand at comedy (Their specialty is self parody)

The dinner is an annual event dedicated to honoring the media and those who cover Congress.

The star of the dinner was The Daily Show’s Senior Black Correspondent Larry Wilmore.

Congressman Anthony Wiener (D-NY) gave the humor a shot, and yes it is pronounced the way you think. He talked about his name and his coarse interview skills.

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) tested out the mic. Even though he didn’t get the loudest applause you just gotta remember Washington is tough crowed. Here it is:

It’s always a flip to have politicians make us laugh rather than cry. How do you think they did?
