Engaging Student Voices

Engaging Student Voices

Lectures on political cartooning and free speech have taken Kevin “Kal” Kallaugher—UMBC artist-in-residence and editorial cartoonist for The Economist—to dozens of campuses around the world, but none quite like UMBC. In Russia, students broke into spontaneous applause when they learned that freedom of speech protection in the U.S. Constitution enables Kallaugher to satirize political leaders without fear of reprisal. The ability to critically draw your own head of state, he argues, is true evidence of freedom of expression. At UMBC, he works with a team of bright and energized student bloggers who exercise this freedom as journalists on USDemocrazy, a news site for students, by students.

“I tell everyone about USDemocrazy and my experience here at UMBC because it fits right into that picture,” says Kallaugher. “New social media, as we know, has turned out to be an important lever to enabling societies and people to express themselves in ways they have not been able to do until now, and it’s a tool that’s worth harnessing as much as possible.”

USDemocrazy has come a long way since January 2009, when it transitioned from a map-based informational site for young people about the U.S. political system—created through Kallaugher’s leadership—to a UMBC student-authored daily news blog. “Our bloggers are now journalists and I tell them that they are empowered to walk up to anybody to ask a question,” Kallaugher says. “They’re not going to be witnessing history as it unfolds; they’re going to be partaking in history. They are going to frame the important subjects and help educate people about what’s going on.”

To-date the blog has received hundreds of thousands of views from readers in all 50 states and 130 countries, and it continues to grow. This is in large part because Kallaugher sees himself not just as an artist-in-residence, but “also an ambassador for UMBC, reaching parts of the country and the world that for the first time are getting that introduction.”

In addition to international trips—such as a 12-day visit to universities in Jordan and Lebanon and a standing-room-only talk at TEDxWarwick—Kallaugher has spoken at museums, arts events, on public radio and with technology and entertainment firms around the country. He has also begun collaborating with middle and high schools that want to utilize USDemocrazy as a tool to teach students about current events and the importance of being informed, taking advantage of the site’s accessible writing and engaging format.

Beyond their commitment to post two to three times a day, six days a week, 52 weeks a year, USDemocrazy’s student bloggers have branched out to producing original research articles and video content and live-Tweeting, covering the Colbert-Stewart Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear and the State of the Union. Senior members now mentor new bloggers on efficiently creating high quality content to meet tight deadlines. “The voice of the blog…sounds like people who are fresh and new to the news,” Kallaugher reflects, “and I think people who are fresh and new to the news themselves respond to that.”

The aims of the blog are indeed similar to Kallaugher’s own goals as editorial cartoonist for The Economist. “My job is not to make people laugh. It’s to make people think,” Kallaugher remarked in the San Francisco Examiner. “You’re trying to further the political discourse using a tool which is accessible to the masses.”

Kallaugher is excited about emerging opportunities to reach new audiences through USDemocrazy as young readers increasingly turn to online news sources. Plus, he says, working with a talented technical crew at UMBC’s Imaging Research Center and energized young writers at a moment of profound media transition is “an irresistible combination.”

Learn about KAL’s early work at UMBC through UMBC Magazine. Students and faculty interested in working with USDemocrazy can email KAL directly.

    alane@umbc.edu

The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) chess team will attempt to reassert its dominance in the collegiate chess world with a victory this weekend in the 2011 President’s Cup, known as the “Final Four of College Chess.”

The competition, to be held April 2-3 in Herndon, Va., will match the intensity of this weekend’s men’s and women’s NCAA Division I Final Four basketball championships as the UMBC Retrievers seek a third straight victory against their arch-rivals from the University of Texas at Dallas. Two other strong teams from Texas will also compete.

“These teams are more closely matched than they have ever been before,” said UMBC Chess Director Alan Sherman.

Battling weather-induced travel delays and illness, UMBC’s team placed second in December at the Pan-American Intercollegiate Team Chess Championship, losing narrowly to UT Dallas. The President’s Cup amounts to a rematch as it brings together the top four U.S. teams from that tournament: UMBC, UT Dallas, Texas Tech University and the University of Texas at Brownsville/Texas Southmost College.

UMBC’s team will be led by International Grandmaster Sergey “The Stealth” Erenburg. Grandmaster Leonid “Chief” Erenburg will play the second board, Grandmaster Giorgi Margvelashvili will play third and International Master Sasha “Plaplan” Kaplan will play fourth.

One bright spot from the December championship was the performance by UMBC’s Sabina “Sunshine” Foisor, who won all her matches — including a victory against Alejandro Ramirez, a Grandmaster and the top player at UT Dallas — as she led UMBC’s B-team to a fifth-place finish.

Foisor, a Woman Grandmaster, is first alternate at on the Final Four team, with Ricky Selzler serving as second alternate.

Supporting the UMBC team are Grandmaster Sam Palatnik, associate director, and Coach Igor Epshteyn.

UMBC has captured first place six times in the Final Four’s ten-year history, with UT Dallas prevailing the other four years. This year offers a dramatic rematch between UMBC and UTD, and a “Cinderella” opportunity for Texas Tech or Brownsville to claim their first national title.

The President's Cup is a national event sanctioned by the U.S. Chess Federation and hosted this year by Booz Allen Hamilton. The competition is open to the public and will take place in rooms 2237 and 2238 at Booz Allen Hamilton’s “One Dulles” building, 13200 Woodland Park Road in Herndon, Va. Round one and two begin at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. on April 2. The final round begins at 9 a.m. on April 3.

You can follow the chess games move by move this weekend at www.monroi.com. Information about the tournament will be posted at www.collegechess.org.

Speaking the truth about domestic violence is a step toward healing for all survivors. But when talking about violence brings shame, ambivalence, and fear, art therapy
gives survivors not only a voice, but also is a way to raise
consciousness about the profound effects of battering and all forms of
    abuse between partners.

While I have no explanation for the
psychology behind the current financial crisis, as a therapist I am
certain of one psychological effect of an economic turndown -- an
increase in domestic violence. In this time of economic uncertainty, job
loss, home foreclosures, and increased costs of living, pressures mount
in families and frayed tempers inevitably will give way to an increase
in battering and abuse. According to the National Domestic Violence Hotline,
domestic violence is a pattern of behavior in any relationship that is
used to gain or maintain power and control over an intimate partner.
Physical, sexual, emotional, economic or psychological actions or
threats of actions that influence another person may all be part of the
dynamics, including any behaviors that frighten, intimidate, terrorize,
manipulate, hurt, humiliate, blame, injure or wound another individual.

While domestic violence can happen to anyone of any race, age, sexual orientation, religion, socioeconomic status, or gender,
for the past 25 years I have worked with adult women and child
survivors and mostly those who have found refuge in shelters and safe
    houses. I suspect
that with the continuing economic rollercoaster, we will see a rise in
not only reports of domestic violence, but also a strain on these
community-based programs that help women and children leave abusive
    relationships.

Although personal safety and a violence-free life
are the first and foremost issues for anyone who is the victim of
domestic violence, the long term healing process involves recovery from
cumulative trauma, often posttraumatic stress reactions, and almost always personal shame and loss of self. Art therapy,
which formally began as a field and treatment shortly after World War
II, continues to be widely adopted to help battered women and children
deal with their physical and emotional scars. Art as a healing force
does not come easy for those whose lives have been controlled, are
accustomed to betrayal and punishment, and have learned self-hatred. But inevitably when it does, creativity and imagination restore a sense of possibility, identity,
and reconnection with parts of the self that were silenced in order to
survive the violence. While survivors often feel shame in talking about
abuse, talking about their artworks is an experience of finally coming
    home.

The tradition of art as a voice for domestic violence survivors has spawned a number of well-known programs, including the Clothesline Project,
a project to address violence against women. In 1990, visual artist
Rachel Carey-Harper, inspired by the AIDS quilt, presented the concept
of using shirts hanging on a clothesline as a way to raise
consciousness. Since doing the laundry was always considered women's
work and women often exchanged information
over backyard fences while hanging their clothes out to dry, the
concept of the clothesline became the vehicle. Each year thousands of
women now tell their stories of survival—and commemorate victims who
died from domestic violence—by using words and/or artwork to decorate a
t-shirt to be exhibited on a clothesline. And programs such as A Window Between Worlds in Venice, CA, serve as models for how art helps both women and children develop a sense of hope, possibility, and safety.

In her seminal volume, Trauma and Recovery,
Judith Herman echoes the very reason that violence must be transformed
in some way in order for recovery to begin: “Certain violations are too
terrible to utter out loud: this is the meaning of the word unspeakable
…Atrocities, however, refuse to be buried.” Domestic violence is one of
those atrocities that continues to plague lives and for its survivors,
is often too horrific to verbalize. Unfortunately, it may increase and
intensify in these weeks and months if the expected financial crises
continue. And while art is not the panacea for abuse, it is certainly a
way through it and one that not only transforms the atrocities of
violence, but also sends a powerful message that ultimately breaks the
    silence.

If you need help, please contact National Domestic Violence Hotline at http://www.ndvh.org/ or phone 1-800-799-SAFE (7233). October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
