Smoothies, Shakes, and Floats at Gelahto

Gelahto has just rolled out a new series of delicious smoothies, shakes, and floats. I had the chance to sample some of the flavors thanks to Mark Tarkanick and Brittany from Chartwells.

First of all, what is “gelato,” you ask? Gelato is Italian ice cream “prepared from all natural fresh ingredients” (Info poster next to Gelahto). There are two categories: Fruit flavors and cream flavors. The water-based fruit flavors contain absolutely no dairy and are considered “true sorbettos.” The cream flavors are dairy-based and made with whole milk.

Now, let’s start the sampling!

Rootbeer Float Gelato

First up is the All American Favorite. This rootbeer float has the foam you are looking for! Made with vanilla gelato, you can top it with the rootbeer from the soda fountain to create your own frothy treat.

Creamsicle Gelato

Remember those orange Popsicles from your childhood summertime? Now enjoy it in float form with the Creamsicle! This orange Fanta flavored float is also based with vanilla gelato. Bring on the summer!

Berry Coke Gelato

For all of you fruit-in-your-soda lovers, the Berry Coke float is the perfect choice. This smooth blend is wild-berry gelato mixed with Coke for a drink that is sure to satisfy your thirst.

A Refreshing Kiss

This Sprite and lemon sorbetto mix lives up to its title: Refreshing Kiss. This blend is accented by the lemonade flavor. Another summertime treat!

Strawberry Sorbetto Lemonade

Did I mention you can create your own flavors? Any flavor you see can be blended to order. This popular request is strawberry and lemon gelato mixed with lemon sorbetto. The fruit-punch flavor is very smooth and a delight to drink.

That’s it for the Floats, now on to the Shakes!

The Monkey Monster Shake

The Monkey Monster: a thick chocolate shake complete with a fresh banana blended right in. My favorite sample of the day (I’m a chocoholic); this is one of the most popular items from the new menu. Chocolate lovers rejoice!

Strawberry Shake

Another made-to-order blend, the Strawberry Shake is a smooth, creamy mix made with real strawberries. Don’t limit yourself to the menu! Anything you crave can be blended for a treat unique to your desires.

And finally, the Smoothies:

Wildberry Smoothie

Need some fruit in your life? Try the Wildberry Smoothie. With a strong kick of fruit, this blend will leave you thirsting for more!

Raspberry Lemon Smoothie

Raspberry Lemon rounds out the sampling session. This pink blend is a another summer-inspired mix, starring the sorbetto lemonade complemented by real raspberries.

So, stop by Gelahto, say “hello” to Brittany, and treat yourself to a satisfying treat! With the wide range of flavors, you can customize the perfect mix you’re searching for.

Hello Brittany!

Thank you Brittany for preparing the samples, and Mark Tarkanick for setting up the session!

The Face Value of Facebook

How much is Facebook worth to you? If you are like millions of other folks around the world it is worth a few minutes of your time each day.

To the Financial giant Goldman Sachs it is worth a little more… in fact about $50 billion more (yes, that is Billion with a B).

At that price, Facebook would be worth more than Ebay and TimeWarner.

Sachs recently invested a hefty sum of money in the Internet giant raising speculation that Facebook might be preparing to go “Public”. Currently Facebook is a private company headed by founder and Time magazine 2010 Man of the year Mark Zuckerberg.

If the owners of Facebook decide to go public and sell shares of the company, Goldman Sachs and Zuckerberg would be poised to add billions to their already sizeable wealth.

But how could Facebook be worth so much? True, a good portion of web surfers are spending (wasting?)copious hours on the site.

But how can the owners of the site monetize Facebook without driving away visitors?

If you were Mark Zuckerberg, what would you do?

"Ace of Cupcakes" wins National Award

<Tagline>Erickson RA Patricia Orrence wins National Of The Month</Tagline>

Resident Assistants around UMBC are required to hold events for their residents and communities on a regular basis as part of their jobs. Every now and then, however, one of these programs is so extraordinary it stands well above the rest.

On November 12th, Erickson RA Patricia Orrence held "Ace of Cupcakes", a program aimed at residents of her floor to help advertise for the annual EBI Benchmarking Survey. This survey is conducted by Residential Life to identify student needs, departmental strengths and weaknesses, and to track changes in those areas over time. However, getting residents to take this survey is notoriously difficult, despite the numerous incentives offered by Residential Life. An RA in her second year, Patricia was aware of this and wanted to ensure that her residents were willing to come to the program. Ask any college student, and the one thing that ensures they will come to an event is free food, and especially free dessert. However, Patricia was conscious of the fact that several of her residents were on restricted diets, including a number of vegetarians and vegans. To incorporate all of these needs, "Ace of Cupcakes" included vegan cupcakes, specially made to avoid using any animal products, and homemade vegan fondant icing, which attendees could use to decorate their own cupcakes. Patricia also provided exotic teas for other refreshment.

The program was a resounding success amongst staff and students, and was particularly enjoyed by vegan students, who are frequently unable to find desserts that fit within their diets. As a result of the effort Patricia put into incorporating the dietary needs of the Erickson community, this program received several awards, first from the UMBC Chapter of the National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH) and then from the Central Atlantic Affiliate of College & University Residence Halls, as Campus and Regional Social Program of the Month for November.

Monday night, it was announced that Ace of Cupcakes had been recognized once more as the National Social Program of November by the National Association of College & University Residence Halls, Inc. (NACURH), the largest student-run organization in the world. NACURH and its affiliated service organization, NRHH, include schools from across the United States, Canada, Mexico, Qatar, Australia, and Hong Kong, making this accomplishment truly amazing. National Awards of this sort have rarely been given to UMBC, this being only the tenth in the school's history and the second this year.

On behalf of the National Residence Hall Honorary and the National Association of College & University Residence Halls, congratulations to Patricia Orrence for an outstanding program.

To learn more about the "Ace of Cupcakes" program, read the award nomination at http://otms.nrhh.org/otm_program.php3?otmid=119171&vid=t2aj1mx53ebqzggj . genetic and/or environmental factors (such as Down syndrome or car
accident injuries, respectively) can be traumatizing. This is especially
true with children because they are expected to cope with so much at
a young age. Therapy sessions can be intense and draining for
patients and can take a toll on their psychological state. MT, which
promotes wellness in individuals by offering therapeutic benefits to
the mind through the use of musical involvements, can help offset the
psychological fatigue associated with PT. I plan on researching the
specific types of physical disabilities for the children at the
schools/institutions, so I can better understand the limitations and
hazards of each disability. I also plan on attending educational
workshops based on music, education, and therapy so that I may work
under licensed therapists with both clinical and work experience. I wish
to create innovative therapy techniques to incorporate music into
therapy sessions by utilizing kinesthetic techniques to respond to
sounds, creating group exercises to heighten social skills, and
encouraging patients to compose and perform songs to help relieve
stress and stimulate their minds. The goal of my research is to
examine whether or not the combined use of PT and MT in therapy
sessions is positively correlated with the patient’s mental and
          physical well-being.

To find out more about Megha's research and to view her q&a session, click the URL below!

Environmentalists are out to DESTROY YOU!!!

When we recently saw a DVD titled “Resisting the Green Dragon,” we were thought it had to be a bad 1980’s Kung-Fu movie.

We were wrong… it was MUCH WORSE than an 80’s Kung-Fu movie…

This 12-piece DVD set comes from a coalition of religious groups, including Right Wing Watch.

It battles with the newest demon to threaten the world as we know it: ENVIRONMENTALSTS!!!!

Check out this bit from the press release:

“One of the greatest threats to society and the church today is the multifaceted environmentalist movement,” says Cornwall Alliance founder and national spokesman Dr. E. Calvin Beisner. “There isn’t an aspect of life that it doesn’t seek to force into its own mold.”

Essentially, this series intends to dispel “rumors” of climate change and delegitimize “radical environmentalists”.

Evidently Right Wing Watch thinks environmentalists intend not to save the planet but to (insert scary music here) destroy the Bible and Christianity as we know it!!!

We at US Democrazy are huge supporters of democracy, and enjoy a robust discussion on issues of the day.

But we also think crazy contributors to this discussion should be challenged vigorously.

Do you think “Resisting the Green Dragon” is a little on the crazy-side?
