JASON report on the Science of Cyber-Security

They released an 88-page report last month, Science of Cyber-Security with the following abstract:

“JASON was requested by the DoD to examine the theory and practice of cyber-security, and evaluate whether there are underlying fundamental principles that would make it possible to adopt a more scientific approach, identify what is needed in creating a science of cyber-security, and recommend specific ways in which scientific methods can be applied. Our study identified several sub-?elds of computer science that are specifically relevant and also provides some recommendations on further developing the science of cyber-security.”

The report discusses to general technical approaches to putting cyber-security on a scientific foundation. The first is based on the standard collection of frameworks and tools grounded in logic and mathematics such as cryptography, game theory, model checking and software verification. The second is grounding cyber-security on a model based on an analog to immunology in biological systems.

It concludes with some observations, recommendations and responses to nine questions that were included in their charge. One interesting observation is that cyber-security, unlike the physical sciences, involves adversaries, so its foundation will use many different tools and methods. A recommendation is that the government establish cyber-security research centers in universities and other research organizations with a “long time horizon and periodic reviews of accomplishments”.

UMBC to host largest Collegiate StarCraft Tournament

<Tagline>Collegiate Masters StarLeague (CMSL) coming Feb 12th 2011</Tagline>

Even before the overwhelming response we got for our game against UMCP we have been thinking about having a real StarCraft Tournament for UMBC. Initially it was going to be much smaller and basically only include people that knew friends who knew about the tournament, but we have quickly decided to use this opportunity to build our community and relationships within our school and with other schools. Hence the birth of the Collegiate Masters StarLeague.

The Collegiate Masters StarLeague (CMSL) will be held LIVE at UMBC on Feb 12th 2011. The CMSL will feature cash prizes all the way down to 8th place with a prize pool of $900. The event will run all day long on Saturday so we will be providing free food to everyone that comes! (8AM – 10PM)

We are currently working as hard as we possibly can to get sponsors to ensure that the event is completely free for UMBC students. Current student org sponsors include the Chinese Student Association, the Taiwanese Student Association, the Red Cross Club, and the UMBC Breakdancing club.

We have invited many area schools to come and attend our event and we have even received the support of the Collegiate StarLeague (CSL), which runs the tournament that our StarCraft II team plays in. Interested schools currently include: University of Maryland College Park, John Hopkins University, George Mason University, University of Virginia, University of Delaware, Montgomery College, and the College of William and Mary.

We have completed the majority of the rules but we still need YOUR HELP! Even with the best planning, no event can happen without people spreading the word and showing up to support!

Are you a StarCraft II Player? Do you think you are good enough to take the grand prize away? Not planning on going pro but still have a competitive spirit?Join our event, read the rules and then register at CMStarLeague@gmail.com

See the full rules here and see our facebook event here!

Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Repealed!

A major political movetook place this past Saturday.

65 Senators, including 6 Republicans, voted to repeal the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy.

This was the highly controversial law that prevented service men and women from being openly gay in the military. The enactment of this law has resulted in the discharge of almost 14,000 people from the armed services since 1993.

This is great political achievement for President Obama, who promised several times in his campaign to repeal DADT.

In a speech about the Senate’s decision, the President said,

“It is time to close this chapter in our history. It is time to recognize that sacrifice, valor and integrity are no more defined by sexual orientation than they are by race or gender, religion or creed. It is time to allow gay and lesbian Americans to serve their country openly.”

The Pentagon had previously found that having gays and lesbians serve openly posed a low risk to military effectiveness or “unit cohesion”. Even the Pentagon preferred that Congress dealt with this. The alternative would have been lengthy and expensive court cases challenging the law (with the law likely stopped by court order eventually.

However, while this may be hopeful news, the repeal will not take place for 6o days. In Washington… anything can happen in 60 days.

<Tagline>Residential Life staff honored again in November</Tagline>

Every month, the National Residence Hall Honorary selects a number of
individuals, events, and organizations to recognize for the outstanding
contributions they make to the UMBC community. As part of this
recognition, any nomination that we select for recognition as Campus
Winner is sent on to a Regional Committee, part of the Central Atlantic
Affiliate of College and University Residence Halls, for consideration
for more awards. In November of this year, more Residential Life staff members were selected for a number of awards by this
committee. This month, we are very proud to congratulate three more
members of the UMBC Residential Community for their selection as
    Regional Winners!

Susquehanna Desk Manager David Brinsfield has done an outstanding job keeping his staff fully functional. With several desk staffers having to quit their job for various reasons, David has worked constantly to hire new staff members and train them for their new duties. David has also contributed beyond the limits of his position. Despite not being a member of NRHH, he assisted members of NRHH with a presentation they were scheduled to give at an upcoming Regional conference. Read David's full nomination at http://otms.nrhh.org/otm_general.php3?otmid=120869&vid=mf874ks7ksv3hx63 .

Erickson Resident Assistant Patricia Orrence held an "Ace of Cupcakes" program in November to advertise for Residential Life's annual Benchmarking Survey. To help attract residents to her program and encourage them to take the survey, Patricia provided lots of cupcakes with homemade fondant icing. In order to respect the dietary needs of her residents, some of whom are vegetarian or vegan, Patricia provided special vegan cupcakes and Persian teas that would not violate their dietary restrictions. Read the nomination for Patricia's program at http://otms.nrhh.org/otm_program.php3?otmid=119171&vid=t2aj1mx53ebqzggj .

Jackie Wilson is Residential Life's Assistant Director for Operations. During the past month, Jackie has been going above and beyond the expectations of her position. With the winter break approaching, Jackie is often busy helping residents negotiate breaking their housing contracts and changing room assignments as residents switch roommates. This year, however, Jackie has also taken on additional responsibility with the absence of two Community Directors, assisting with roommate meditations, running the annual Benchmarking Survey, and several other additional tasks. Read Jackie's full nomination at http://otms.nrhh.org/otm_general.php3?otmid=121899&vid=j1tj30b2mnb3pzac .

NRHH congratulates all of these individuals for their outstanding
service to UMBC. We wish them the best of luck as their nominations
continue to the National Committee, and as they continue to be models of
     outstanding leaders here on campus.

For more information about OTMs and the National Residence Hall Honorary, please visit our Chapter's website at http://www.umbc.edu/rsa/nrhh .
