Three of UMBC’s most entrepreneurial alumni brought their expertise to the table as judges in UMBC’s annual Idea Competition, sponsored by the Alex.
Alumni Eli Eisenberg ’86, Interdisciplinary Studies, owner of VPC, a video production company; Sean Carton ’90, English, chief strategy officer at idfive, a marketing and advertising agency; and Danielle Marchese ’00, M.S. ’05, information systems management, president of Applied Technology Services, served as judges in the competition. In fact, at the moment, the information systems/geography major is living in Sweden.

And, she’d like to get much, much colder.

Akinmade is currently in the running for a trip to the North Pole during which she would blog, tweet and Facebook about her experiences. But in order to make it happen, she’ll need lots of votes to push her past the finish line and into the Arctic Circle.

If she wins, Akinmade promises to put her personal stamp on the experience:

Finally landing on centuries-old ice at the top of the world, I will scream at the top of my lungs… “I’m a loooong way from Africa!”

UMBC Experts Discuss the Future of the Humanities

    chaddaway@umbc.edu
    www.twitter.com/umbchumanities

As universities re-imagine higher education for the 21st century, the role of the humanities is under debate. UMBC recently demonstrated its faith in the future of the humanities by breaking ground on a state-of- the-art Performing Arts and Humanities Building, which will allow these departments to take their teaching, research and community outreach to new levels.

The following is a sampling of UMBC experts in the humanities available to discuss the ways that the humanities are being re-imagined for today’s world.

In an age where we are exposed to an unprecedented volume of ideas, information and opinions, Rebecca Boehling, director of the Dresher Center for the Humanities, sees the humanities as more important than ever because they help students develop the critical analytical skills, creativity and empathy to understand, evaluate and make choices about the information around them. “In tough economic times there’s a tendency to want all education to be practical and career-oriented, but there’s an important way in which insights into human behavior and interaction—whether through personal experience, reading or seeing a play—force you to step outside of yourself and your comfort zone,” she says. “An engaged citizenry needs to be able to do that.” Boehling leads a center that keeps the humanities alive by engaging the community with research and scholarship by UMBC faculty, students and guests. She also serves as an associate professor of history, where she focuses on Holocaust Studies, 20th century Germany, gender and women’s history and postwar transitional justice.

Associate professor of history Anne Rubin is developing an interactive project with UMBC’s Imaging Research Center called Sherman’s March and America. Based on her research into memories of the Civil War, Rubin is creating a website with interactive maps that tell the story of the march through photos, videos and voices. This project is an example of how digital methods can be used to achieve the traditional goals of humanities research.

Jason Loviglio is the director of the Media and Communication Studies program, which teaches students to understand, critique and use modern forms of communication by applying the traditional humanities tools of critical thinking, writing and revision. The program has quickly grown from a certificate within the American Studies department in 2006 to an independent program with nearly 250 majors, proving that today’s students are eager to use the humanities to answer modern questions. Loviglio can talk about building humanities programs that are relevant to today’s world.

As an assistant professor of American Studies and director of UMBC’s new Center for the Study of Place, Community, and Culture, Nicole King frequently works to connect students and the university to Baltimore communities through research projects on cultural preservation and sustainability. She can discuss the specific ways in which a humanities education can connect and engage students with the world beyond the classroom.

As chair of English, Jessica Berman heads a department that is leading the way in researching and teaching communication and composition practices in multimedia. Students in the department’s one-of-a-kind communication and technology track learn how yesterday’s forms of composition evolved into today’s modes of communication. Students create their own works using forms that range from the traditional written word to performance and design. Faculty members in this track are experts in multimodal composition, digital culture and new media. Berman can discuss the ways that this department is pushing the boundaries of what students learn and do as part of an English education and connect you to faculty.

Anne Scholl-Fiedler, the director of the Career Development Center, has worked with social science and humanities students to market their experience for today’s jobs. She takes career education into the classroom, teaching students to document and share successes that showcase the real-world skills learned through a humanities education and how those experiences relate to their career goals. She can comment on the skills imparted by a humanities education and how humanities students can promote their stories to employers.

UMBC Forms Exploratory Partnership with State Arts Council

UMBC and the Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC) announce an exploratory foundational partnership.

The goal of this initial foundational partnership is to explore the possibilities of a long-term partnership between MSAC and UMBC in which both agencies would share responsibilities for the support and direction of Maryland Traditions, the folklife program of the MSAC.

Highlights of the 2010/2011 partnership agreement include the creation of an adjunct faculty appointment for Maryland Traditions Co-Director Dr. Elaine Eff in the American studies department and the opportunity for Maryland Traditions to work with the college of arts, humanities, and social sciences in community-based academic initiatives. Dr. Eff’s Maryland Traditions co-director position at UMBC will also be affiliated this year with the James T. and Virginia M. Dresher Center for the Humanities, which will host a Maryland Traditions-themed humanities forum event in spring 2011.

“We anticipate that this exploratory partnership will provide opportunities to develop a variety of important connections among UMBC faculty and students, MSAC and Maryland Traditions, and to explore possibilities and strategies for continuation of the partnership on an ongoing basis,” said Dr. John W. Jeffries, dean of the college of arts, humanities and social sciences. “Maryland Traditions has the potential to enhance UMBC’s excellence in the arts, humanities and social sciences.”

“This agreement brings unlimited possibilities to both of our institutions,” said Theresa Colvin, executive director of MSAC. “We hope that this initial phase will blossom into a mutually beneficial long-term partnership, elevating awareness of Maryland folklife, fostering understanding of traditional communities, generating high-quality scholarship on Maryland-based topics and enhancing the experience of UMBC students in the arts, humanities and social sciences through quality internships with Maryland Traditions’ partners statewide.”

Maryland Traditions is in its tenth year of developing statewide infrastructure for folk arts and folklife with support from the National Endowment for the Arts. The program identifies and documents individuals and communities that comprise the state’s folk and traditional arts and folklife. It supports the dissemination of information to wider audiences through publication, presentation and other educational and grant funded activities. The program is co-directed by Dr. Elaine Eff and Dr. Cliff Murphy.

Hack Attack!

When you think of Internet hackers… do you think HERO or VILLAIN?

Normally folks think VILLAIN, a nerdy computer geek glued to a computer causing mayhem in the lives of innocent citizens.

But this week the image of hackers has broadened. Two major hacks have Internet security teams running(again) for cover.

The first attack was a group effort. An invisible army of hackers from around the world have decided to attack the computers at Visa, MasterCard, Paypal and other online financial vendors.

These online vigilantees were amassed in a virtual counterattack against the enemies of WikiLeaks. They called it Operation Payback.

As everyone knows by now, Wikileaks has been accused of treasonous acts by the US government for the release of secret diplomatic communications.

The government has requested Visa, MasterCard and the like to withdraw their business services from Wikileaks. When these companies complied, the hackers reacted.

The hacks caused chaos for a time. The question remains… were these hackers heroes or Villains?

VILLAINS if you are associated with the Gawker media websites. Their websites which include Gizmodo, Jezebel, and Fleshbot were hacked. The hackers grabbed Internet log ins and passwords and posted 200,000 online.

The Wall street Journal surveyed the information and discovered this funny (or sad) scenario

Of the “Top 50 Gawker Media Passwords” found, the top one was “123456.” Second place, even more dismaying, was “password.”
