Hack Attack!

When you think of Internet hackers… do you think HERO or VILLAIN?

Normally folks think VILLAIN, a nerdy computer geek glued to a computer causing mayhem in the lives of innocent citizens.

But this week the image of hackers has broadened. Two major hacks have Internet security teams running(again) for cover.

The first attack was a group effort. An invisible army of hackers from around the world have decided to attack the computers at Visa, MasterCard, Paypal and other online financial vendors.

These online vigilantees were amassed in a virtual counterattack against the enemies of WikiLeaks. They called it Operation Payback.

As everyone knows by now, Wikileaks has been accused of treasonous acts by the US government for the release of secret diplomatic communications.

The government has requested Visa, MasterCard and the like to withdraw their business services from Wikileaks. When these companies complied, the hackers reacted.

The hacks caused chaos for a time. The question remains… were these hackers heroes or Villains?

VILLAINS if you are associated with the Gawker media websites. Their websites which include Gizmodo, Jezebel, and Fleshbot were hacked. The hackers grabbed Internet log ins and passwords and posted 200,000 online.

The Wall street Journal surveyed the information and discovered this funny (or sad) scenario

Of the “Top 50 Gawker Media Passwords” found, the top one was “123456.” Second place, even more dismaying, was “password.”

The other morning, I had some serious craving for comfort food. When I think of breakfast and comfort foods, I think of pancakes or crepes. Fluffy and warm pancakes on a Sunday morning bring memories of happiness in a home cooked meal, a much needed bliss in a food-on-the-go setting.

You need:

4 cups wheat flour

6 ripe bananas

3 cups of soy milk/almond milk

fruit of your choice

cinnamon

olive oil

Cut the bananas in a bowl, mash until soft.

Mix the flour and the milk with the banana mixture. Stir until soft and smooth.

Slice the fruits into small pieces.

Heat the pan.

Drizzle olive oil to grease the pan, set the heat on low.

Use a tablespoon and scoop out about two tablespoons of the pancake mixture. Spread evenly across the surface of the pan. When the bottom has stopped sticking to the pan, carefully add fruit filling of choice to the surface of the crepe. Flip half of the crepe to cover the filling. applying pressure on top the secure the filling.

Flip the crepe. When the bottom has stopped sticking to the pan, flip the crepe again. Scoop out and enjoy!

These vegan crepes are soft and a little chewy, with hints of the sweetness of banana and tenderness of the fruit filling. These crepes are a perfect lazy Sunday brunch to share with friends!

Exam Stories

In the fall of my junior year in college, I got stuck with a final exam in the very last possible time block, from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. on a Friday. The test--on industrial organization theory--was more conceptually difficult than it was time-consuming, and after a little less than two hours I had completed what I considered to be a first draft. That left a little more than an hour to review my answers, look for weaknesses and correct errors.

I took a minute to relax and stretch. There were windows high on the left wall of the room, and from my desk I could see that the sky had gone completely dark. I imagined myself walking out of the room into that evening, with weeks of vacation ahead, and a reunion with my high school friends planned for that very night. But I banished the thought, because there was still an hour's worth of work to do: time to polish the rough text I had thrown onto the pages of my bluebook.

That was when the chimes began. UCLA has a speaker system that occasionally broadcasts the melodic sounds of a carillon from the library building's bell tower. No doubt it wasn't supposed to start playing during a final exam period, but there it was, impossible to ignore. The tune it was playing, gently and insistently (and quite loudly), was "Silent Night." BONG bong bong BONG. (I put down my pen). BONG bong bong BONG. (I started to think about how nice it would be when the stress of finals left my body, as soon as I turned in my exam and walked out the door). BONG BONG bong. BONG BONG bong.

It probably took 45 seconds before my will to resist was completely destroyed, and I turned in my exam and wandered happily into the December night.

Good luck on all of your exams and papers. The welcoming December nights await you too, after this last push. And luckily for you, UMBC doesn't have a carillon attached to a loudspeaker system (at least, as far as you know).

Jailing Failing

If you have ever played the game MONOPOLY you know the phrase GO TO JAIL!!!

Seems pretty harmless part of the popular game.

But in the real world, jail is anything but harmless. In fact, jail-time is causing billions of dollars of damages to the country!

It works like this…The United States has the highest prison population in the world (see chart below).

1 in every 31 adults facing probation (in prison or outside of prison) or on parole.

Courtesty Wikipedia

The problem is… prisons aren’t working well. These “correctional” institutions are not correcting the inmates as many return to crime upon release.

Writer Adam Serwer found the large prison population is costing the economy big time.

“US economy los[t] the equivalent of 1.5 to 1.7 million workers…but there was also a national $57 billion to $65 billion loss in productivity and output”

Clearly, the answer isn’t to just “let criminals go,” but there is some validity to rethinking our prison system as a whole.

Non-violent offenders, including “financial fraudsters” (as Andrew Sullivan puts it), could serve an alternative sentence of sorts, giving up their assets, doing community service, and operating under a curfew. This way, these non-violent criminals would not need to be a burden on the state.

Maybe this is something we should stop to think about. What do you think? Are there better alternatives for these non-violent offenders or the prison system as a whole?

The Past Week in LGBTQ News: DADT, Prop 8, and More

 <Tagline>December 6, 2010 - December 12, 2010</Tagline>

There is no real order to this collection of news articles and posts, besides starting with this photo.

The above photograph is from a November 15 protest of the Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy in front of the White House, where Park Police are arresting a veteran and gay rights activist who had handcuffed himself to the fence. (Source: Alex Wong/Getty Images, as posted on Boston.com) This past week, repeal DADT was put before the U.S. Senate once again, but Republicans' filibuster prevented discussion from being opened on repeal of DADT. Cloture, where a filibuster is forced to end, did not muster enough votes, and the repeal was again defeated in Senate.

Earlier this year, a federal district court had declared DADT unconstitutional and gave an injunction that the U.S. military is to begin admitting openly gay Americans, but an appellate court stayed this injunction until an appeal. The Supreme Court declined to throw out this stay.

The Proposition 8 case, Perry v. Schwarzenegger, continues to work its way up the federal court system as I posted it earlier. Lambda Legal's analysis of the arguments before the Ninth Circuit. Again, what is being decided is 1. whether the current defendants (not the California attorney general, who declined to defend Prop 8 in appeals after the CA Supreme Court struck it down) has legal standing and 2. whether Prop 8 is unconstitutional.

Also on marriage equality, Maryland appears to be poised to move closer to pro-marriage legislation next year. (This is may be a great opportunity for UMBC students to get involved locally.)

Lamba Legal also reports on a settlement of a suit against the Atlanta Police Department on unconstitutional search and seizures. The case stems from the Atlanta PD raiding the gay bar Atlanta Eagle, making patrons lay down on the ground, searching them illegally, and making homophobic comments. Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the Atlanta PD could have settled the case in February, and the only difference in the settlement terms now is that the city will also have to pay the twenty-eight plaintiffs more than a million dollars, total.

Shelby County District Attorney Bill Gibbons has been chosen by Tennessee Governor-Elect Bill Haslam to be the new Commissioner of Safety and Homeland Security. Unfortunately, Gibbons has proven himself transphobic in his stint as district attorney.

DynCorp is a private security contractor hired by the US government to provide training to Afghani police. The State Department has clarified that a dancing boy was performing at a DynCorp-hosted party, but DynCorp acted responsibly, stopping the dance midway. There have been previous incidences involving DynCorp and the sexual slavery of minors in Bosnia.
