Real People Profiles: Matthew McNey
I’m asking some of the people you might encounter on the UMBC campus, including students, faculty, staff and alumni, to answer a few questions about themselves and their experiences. These are their responses.
Hometown: Columbia
Q: How long have you been at UMBC?
A: This will be my third year, fifth semester at UMBC and still loving every minute of it!
Q: What is your current title (job or student organization position)?
A:SGA Senator (this will be my third year in this position) and President of College Democrats.
Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus?
A: Why 12 Words? Argh... ok: Supportive of change, loyal student advocate (not actually a Student Advocate) and political pragmatist.
Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?
A: In the past the SGA was in a role, not dissimilar from High School, positions were important and we were the loyal opposition to the administration. It has been a good transition from a competitive atmosphere when I entered SGA to a more equitable atmosphere and the organization becoming a shareholder in making decisions with the administration. I guess, the best aspect with my role would have to be participating in this change and continuing these philosophical discussions about where the campus should continue going, its always given me a certain feeling of place and purpose. I do hope to leave a meaningful impact on UMBC before I leave and in some big way.
Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?
A: Focusing on what the problem actually is to find solutions, not the other way around.
Q: Complete this sentence: "I am a big fan of __________"
A: Speaking Truth to Power.
Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?
A: I should say the SGA office, because I'm always there! Get involved! Otherwise College is boring, especially at UMBC where everyone takes studying way to seriously (me included), but there is never anything to do you just have to look, ask and investigate!

Tendulkar is today's Bradman, says Lara
Sachin Tendulkar & Brian Lara admire each other's abilities
Saluting the longevity of Sachin Tendulkar, West Indies great Brian Lara has described the Indian batting legend as the 'Don Bradman' of modern era but refused to the compare the icons of different eras.
Lara, himself a legendary left-handed batsman from the Caribbean, said what astonishes him the most about Tendulkar is his longevity.
"I don't think there is any race. Both are great players. Tendulkar has shown the world what he is capable of and his longevity in the game is something to be really appreciated," Lara said.
"The time he will spend in the game, records are going to tumble. The fact that someone can be there from the age of 16 and still at the age of 37 perform brilliantly is something that I cherish more than anything else," he said.
The West Indies player is of the opinion that Australian great Don Bradman, who ended his career with an incredible Test average of 99.96, and Tendulkar should not be compared as they played and flourished in different eras.
"He is our period's Don Bradman. Forget the difference in averages with Bradman but whoever I have spoken to who have seen very old players in action, they believe that he (Bradman) would not have averaged 99 in today's cricket.
"So I believe that Sachin is our period's Bradman," Lara, who visited Dubai for a jewelry brand endorsement, told Gulf News.

Collin Wojciechowski is UMBC's Student Regent Nominee
Collin Wojciechowski has been selected as UMBC's nominee for Student Regent. Collin is a sophomore majoring in Political Science and pursuing a minor in History. He is Director of SGA's Office of Governmental and Community Affairs, Opinion Editor of The Retriever Weekly and a Sondheim Scholar. When he was in high school, Collin served as the student member of the Anne Arundel County Board of Education.
The Student Regent is the sole student member of the University System of Maryland Board of Regents, which governs a state public higher education system that includes the UMBC, the University of Maryland College Park, Towson University and eight other campuses, along with the Center for Environmental Science and two regional higher education centers (at Shady Grove and Hagerstown). As UMBC's nominee for the position for 2011-2012, Collin will be interviewed (along with the other campus nominees) in the next few weeks by the University System of Maryland Student Council, which will forward the names of three finalists for consideration by the Governor. Early next year Governor O'Malley will make the final choice.
UMBC nominees have had great success in recent years. The past 8 nominees all have been selected as finalists, and two have been appointed Student Regent: Phil Shockley (2003-2004) and Josh Michael (2008-2009). Last year's UMBC nominee, doctoral student Alexia Van Orden, now serves as the sole student member of the Maryland Higher Education Commission.
