This evening between the hours of 5:30 pm to 8:53 pm, the senate convened. The meeting began with the senators discussing their one month progress, the shape of senate, and the strengths and weaknesses of senate. The senators were intent on becoming a more efficient, responsive and proactive governing body. (If you have any feedback on as to how the senate can further improve, please share your insights below).

The next issue of the day was smoking. It was refreshing to see the senators excited to share the opinions gleaned from the general student about the Smoking Policy. They were excited to continue this topic into the next week. The senate also prepared to host their first guest of the year, Dr. Moreira (Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and Professor of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, here at UMBC). The most exciting news of the meeting was: the senate decided to create a 24/7 study area for our use in the library! Today's meeting consisted of several humorous moments, and not to mention the CAKE! Happy belated birthday Senator Damani Lewis! Overall, senate had a fantastic and productive meeting this evening. I look forward towards covering this fine assembly for the duration of the semester. Stay tuned for updates regarding future senate meetings!

Mahi Reddy, President and CEO of SemaConnect, an affiliate company of bwtech@UMBC’s Clean Energy Technology Incubator was recognized as the Maryland Clean Energy Center’s (MCEC) Entrepreneur of the Year at its Clean Energy Summit on October 4. The award recognizes an individual or new company that brings new clean energy technologies, products or services to the market in Maryland.

SemaConnect, based in Annapolis, produces the ChargePro, a charging station for electric cars as well as web-based software for both station owners and drivers that allows them to register users, monitor use and make payments. The stations are being marketed to property managers, parking lot owners and corporations as a means of providing residents and employees with a means to recharge their electric vehicles. The company hopes that the increased availability of charging stations will encourage more people to purchase electric vehicles.

Founded last year by Reddy, a serial entrepreneur who previously owned a healthcare information technology company, the company has gained much recognition for its innovative ideas and sales potential. In addition to being honored by the MCEC, the company was a finalist in the Greater Baltimore Technology Council’s recent “Hottest Tech in Town” competition.

While its headquarters are in Annapolis, SemaConnect has a strong relationship with bwtech@UMBC’s Clean Energy Technology Incubator (CETI). As an affiliate company, SemaConnect receives guidance and networking opportunities from CETI’s entrepreneurial services staff, including Entrepreneur-in-Residence Bjorn Frogner. Said Frogner: “Mahi Reddy impressed me as a serial entrepreneur with a successful track record in starting, growing and selling a prior IT company. This experience will help him make SemaConnect successful and it will also benefit other CETI companies, since he will act as a business advisor for the CETI.”

“I am very excited and honored to have received the award,” said Reddy. “I am grateful for the support SemaConnect has received from bwtech@UMBC and the Maryland Clean Energy Center for our efforts to produce an innovative product such as the ChargePro."

“SemaConnect’s innovative work will no doubt have a positive impact on our climate and society. The Maryland Clean Energy Center is proud to recognize Mahi Reddy for his leadership in this endeavor,” said Katherine Magruder, executive director of the MCEC.

Not Your Grandma’s Average Potato Salad:

I am a sucker for great picnic salads. Pasta, potato, tomato caprese, and fruit: it seems as though the possibilities for these salads just keep growing! Now to me, a lot of these store bought or restaurant made potato salads tastes the same! Potatoes, eggs, and mayo: classics in the potato salad. Don’t worry, I kept those staples in this one too! No offense to your grandma or anything, but have you just gotten bored with her potato salad? No big flavor, just creamy, starchy “stuff”? Here’s a way to add a kick to this picnic staple, and have the taste of summer all year long.

This recipe feeds a family crowd and lasts a whole week for a single person. It gets better and better as it sits in the fridge and absorbs all that delicious dressing!

Ingredients:

-5-6 red bliss potatoes, chopped into rough, rustic bite size pieces

-2 heaping tablespoons of Dijon mustard

-2 heaping tablespoons of mayonnaise

-3 hard boiled eggs, diced

-Handful of fresh dill, chopped or minced

-1.5 tablespoon of fresh chives, chopped

-Splash of apple cider vinegar

-2 heaping tablespoons of honey (or simple syrup, see directions below)

-1/2 teaspoon of paprika

-Salt and pepper to taste

This recipe feeds approximately 6 people.

Simple syrup:

1. Over a stove top (on low heat) or with a microwave, melt equal parts of water and sugar.

2. Wait to cool and use to sweeten drinks, dessert sauces, jams, or even potato salad!

Potato salad:

1. Boil the potatoes until fork tender.

2. Mix mustard, mayonnaise, dill, chives, vinegar, honey, salt, pepper, and paprika together at the bottom of the bowl.

3. Add the potatoes and eggs when they are still warm (the dressing gets absorbed quicker!)

Serve warm or cold with your favorite burgers, steaks, or “summer-year-round” dishes!
