          <p>Tired of trekking across campus for food, only to find out that they aren’t serving something you like? Wish you could have been at the dining hall when they made your favorite dinner but you didn’t know about it? This semester, you can check out what Chartwells is dishing up on their website before you head out to eat. Three locations are now posting their menu online each week for the convenient use of students: True Grits, Fresh Fusions, and the Skylight Room.</p>

          <p>All of the meal periods and location hours are posted here along with upcoming events that Chartwells is sponsoring. This week is “Eat Local Week,” where foods from local farms will be featured on the menu. Check back often to see what other excited events will be going on around campus at different dining locations and get all the specific info!</p>

Norvig mentions Alan Kay’s view of Lisp as “Maxwell’s Equations of Software” in a 2004 <a href="http://queue.acm.org/detail.cfm?id=1039523" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">interview</a> with Stu Feldman:</p>
    <blockquote>
    <p> <strong>SF:</strong> If nothing else, Lisp was carefully defined in terms of Lisp.
    </p>
    <p> <strong>AK</strong>: Yes, that was the big revelation to me when I was in graduate school—when I finally understood that the half page of code on the bottom of page 13 of the Lisp 1.5 manual was Lisp in itself. These were “Maxwell’s Equations of Software!” This is the whole world of programming in a few lines that I can put my hand over. </p>
    </blockquote>
    <p>There is also a companion essay, <a href="http://norvig.com/lispy2.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">(How to Write a ((Better) Lisp) Interpreter (in Python))</a>, that shows how to add other features, like macros, quasi-quote, tail recursion optimization and continuations. Sadly, this bloats the code to well over 200 lines.</p>

The CADVC serves as a forum for students, faculty, and the general public for the discussion of important aesthetic and social issues of the day. Disciplines represented include painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, photography, digital art, video, film, television, design, architecture, advertising, and installation and performance art.</p> <p>Since 1989, the CADVC has incorporated a number of public programs into its exhibition programming schedule to further impact the communities it serves. Symposia, lecture series, conferences, film series, visiting artist series, and residencies have all been fundamental in an effort to create an ongoing dialogue about contemporary art and culture. The Center has also initiated a number of projects with Baltimore and surrounding schools to integrate the contemporary artist and their concerns into the classroom. These projects take place on-site at both middle schools and high schools and are team taught by the instructors at these schools, professional artists, and students from the CADVC's Internship Program.</p> <p><img src="http://www.umbc.edu/newsevents/arts/hi-res/visualart/cadvc/spectrum/worden02-s.jpg" alt="Fred Worden: video still from 1859" height="270" width="360" style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;">The Center produces one to two exhibition catalogues each year. Each document is fully illustrated and contains critical essays on the given subject by a variety of distinguished professionals in the field. Recent publications include <em>Postmodernism: A Virtual Discussion</em> and <em>Paul Rand: Modernist Design</em>. These books and catalogues are published and are distributed internationally through Distributed Art Publishers.</p> <p>Since 1992, the Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture has actively pursued the organization of exhibitions that contain the aesthetic, theoretical, and educational potential to reach both a national and international audience. Over the years, the CADVC has traveled these exhibition projects to a broad spectrum of museums, professional non-profit galleries, and universities national and internationally. Recent traveling exhibitions include:</p> <p> • <em>White: Whiteness and Race in Contemporary Art</em> (2003)<br> • <em>Fred Wilson: Objects and Installations</em> (2001) <br> • <em>Adrian Piper: A Retrospective</em> (1999) <br> • <em>Bruno Monguzzi: A Designer's Perspective</em> (1998)<br> • <em>Minimal Politics</em> (1997) <br> • <em>Kate Millett, Sculpture: The First 38 Years</em> (1997) </p> <p>Beyond the scope of these traveling exhibitions, the Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture also undertakes projects such as the Joseph Beuys Tree Partnership. As part of the educational mission of the CADVC, one graduate thesis exhibition and one undergraduate senior exhibition are presented each year.</p> <p>This multi-faceted focus for presenting exhibitions, projects and scholarly research publications focused on contemporary art and cultural issues positions the Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture in a unique position within the mid-Atlantic region.</p> <p><strong>Hours and Admission</strong><br> Tuesday through Saturday — 10 A.M. – 5:00 P.M.<br> Admission is free.</p> <p><strong>Public Information</strong><br> UMBC Arts website: <a href="http://www.umbc.edu/arts" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">http://www.umbc.edu/arts</a><br> Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture: <a href="http://www.umbc.edu/cadvc" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">http://www.umbc.edu/cadvc</a><br> Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture phone: 410-455-3188</p> <p><strong>Directions</strong><br> • From Baltimore and points north, proceed south on I-95 to exit 47B. UMBC

    <a href="mailto:alane@umbc.edu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">alane@umbc.edu</a>

    UMBC is a national leader in efforts to prepare underrepresented minorities to pursue careers in the natural sciences and engineering, according to a new report from the National Research Council.

    The congressionally mandated report notes that UMBC is among the top U.S. institutions – and the top producer among predominantly white institutions – for preparing African Americans who went on to complete doctorates in the natural sciences and engineering between 2002 and 2006.

    UMBC’s <a href="http://www.umbc.edu/meyerhoff/index.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Meyerhoff Scholars Program</a> is recognized in the report as a model of the kind of program needed at universities and colleges across the country to increase the number of underrepresented minorities pursuing careers in the natural sciences and engineering. The Meyerhoff Program is a focused effort to increase diversity in the natural sciences, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields by recruiting, supporting and graduating students who go on to doctoral study.

    The report concludes that the U.S. must engage minorities at all levels of STEM education as part of efforts to sustain national leadership in these fields.

    “It’s well-documented that the United States needs a strong science and technology work force to maintain global leadership and competitiveness,” said UMBC President Freeman A. Hrabowski, chair of the committee that produced the report. “The minds and talents of underrepresented minorities are a great untapped resource that the nation can no longer afford to squander. Improving STEM education of our diverse citizenry will strengthen the work force in these fields and boost the U.S. economy.”

    The report notes that underrepresented minorities — including African Americans, Hispanics and Native Americans — comprised 28.5 percent of the nation’s population in 2006, but they made up just over nine percent of the college-educated science and engineering workforce the same year. To start closing this gap, the report recommends:

    •	Higher education institutions should create programs that provide underrepresented minorities in STEM subjects with strong financial, academic and social support.
    •	K-12 STEM teachers need better preparation, and high school programs need to emphasize college readiness.
    •	Long-term, schools need to offer stronger programs that develop reading and mathematics skills and creativity in preschool through third grade, and strengthen the quality of K-12 mathematics and science education for underrepresented minorities.

    The full report can be viewed or purchased at the website for the National Academies, <a href="http://www.nationalacademies.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">http://www.nationalacademies.org/</a>.
