Join/Nominate the First Year Council

The First Year Council is a forum for first-year UMBC students to learn, grow, contribute, and have fun together. With guidance from an experienced student leader and support from advisors in the Office of Student Life (including me), FYC members participate activities that help them get connected and make a difference on campus.

To join the First Year Council, new UMBC students can be nominated by any student organization on campus. Here is how Sunaina Khandelwal, the student leader who will be working with this year's FYC, describes the opportunity:

Every year, the Office of Student Life assembles a First Year Council to give freshman and new transfers an opportunity to meet other motivated peers, get involved on campus, develop leadership skills and assume leadership and responsibility to make a difference at UMBC.

New members get nominated to the council by the Executive Board of each student organization. So,

Freshman and Transfers: If you want to become a leader in the beginning of your UMBC career, get a member of the executive board of an organization that you are part of, to fill out the attachment form with this email if you want to be part of the best.

Exec Boards: Identify your most motivated freshmen and transfer members and give them an opportunity to develop themselves. This way, you will also be identifying a representative for your organization for the entire freshman community.

To obtain a form, or if you have any questions, email Sunaina at khasun1@umbc.edu. The deadline is this Friday, October 1st. You can submit the forms via email to Sunaina, or in hard copy to my office: Commons 2B12 (slip them under the door if I'm not in).

UMBC Resident Assistants win National Award

<Tagline>Pancake Palooza recognized as country's best August social</Tagline>

On August 29, 2010, dozens of hungry resident students crowded into the basement of Susquehanna Hall for Pancake Palooza, this year's opening community social held by the Resident Assistant staff in Susquehanna. Over the course of an hour and a half, over 150 students were served as many plain, blueberry, and chocolate chip pancakes they could stuff their faces with. Crayons and "people bingo" cards encouraged residents to meet each other and doodle while they ate their pancakes. By all reports, everyone enjoyed the program, and thought it a good start to the new school year.

This program was recently selected as the National Social Program of the Month for August 2010 by the National Residence Hall Honorary. This rare honor is the first UMBC has received since March 2008, and signifies that this social was the best held in the month of August, not just in the United States as the name may imply, but also in the countries of Canada, Mexico, Australia, Qatar, and Hong Kong. To see the nomination for this program, go to http://otms.nrhh.org/otm_program.php3?otmid=108732&uid=17329&vid=7c04hnq7sjmg4g5m

The Of The Month award program is run by the National Residence Hall Honorary, a honor society comprised of the top 1% of on-campus student leaders, dedicated to community service, recognizing high achievement on campus, and high academic standards. Nominations for Of The Month awards for September are due on October 5th for campus-level recognition; nominations selected as campus winners are sent to regional and national levels for further recognition.

UMBC's Chapter os NRHH is also accepting applications for new members to be inducted this semester. If you have lived on UMBC's campus for at least one semester, hold a 2.5 cumulative GPA, and demonstrate outstanding leadership skills in your campus involvement, please apply for membership at http://www.umbc.edu/rsa/nrhh/apply .

Parking @ UMBC: Improved?

Well, we’ve been back to school for almost a month now, and I’m curious as to what the student body has to say about the new parking system implemented over the summer. As you most likely already know, parking tags are now assigned on a categorical basis, and based on these, only certain zones are available for parking.

As a residential student, I’ve seen a marked increase in the availability of a spot near to my community, but I’m curious as to where the commuters that used to park in these places have had to begin parking. Are there enough spots for commuters? At the beginning of the semester, a post on myUMBC suggested that the new system has put a larger burden on commuter students, but the discussion is somewhat derailed.

Weigh in, UMBC. Are we better off with this zoned system? Is it easier or harder to park than before?

    Name: Jerilyn Johnson

Hometown: Ellicott City, MD.

Q: How long have you been at UMBC?

A: 2 1/2 years.

Q: What is your current title (job or student organization position)?

A: Administrative Assistant.

Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus?

A: Provide administrative support to the Director of Student Life.

Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?

A:Believe it or not I enjoy the rush of preparing for major events and ordering all the cool stuff that will be used during Quadmania, Welcome Week, Involvement Fest and Homecoming. I enjoy rolling up my sleeves and pitching in for those events. I feel like I have the art of grilling hamburgers and hotdogs on the grill down to a fine science. It brings me satisfaction when I look out of my office window and see the big white tent, tables and chairs I ordered for Convocation all set up and ready to go. I also have a absolute blast shopping and creating theme gift boxes to be raffled off during Big Crazy Fun Night! My position doesn't give me a lot of opportunity to work directly with the students, so when I do get a chance, I really enjoy it, for they bring such great energy to the day..

Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?

A: I volunteered to be a learning partner for the Alternative Spring Break event "A Day in the life of the homeless". There were several groups participating and we lived in the streets of Baltimore for one full day. In addition, we were given roles to play and goals to meet. The only things we had to meet our needs were a bus pass and $2.00 dollars. We ate at a homeless shelter, use restrooms in restaurants, sat on cold concrete and were often turned away when we tried to seek help. It was a real eye opener and it was fun to watch the students really embrace the experience as we all learned so much that day. Finally the day ended around 10 PM and I remember walking to my car anxiously looking forward to the ride home just so I could have something soft to sit on and cut on the heat. After finally getting home, eating a meal, enjoying a hot shower and climbing into a nice soft bed, I was reminded of the many reasons I am so very thankful. However, I will always remember and have an even greater understanding and compassion for those who live homeless every day.

Q: Complete this sentence: “I am a big fan of __________”

A: The Baltimore Ravens! I have followed the Ravens for years and just love our team. Last year I treated my husband to the "big game" against the Steelers. It was electrifying from start to finish. It so cold, but we didn't care, we just wanted to be there to cheer them to victory. Although it turned out to be a closer game than we would have liked, we managed to pull it out in the end. One of these days, I plan to make my basement into a Ravens Sports Zone!

Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?

A: My first year here on campus, I volunteered to work at the commencement ceremony at the 1st Mariner. As I watched the graduates walk across the stage and receive their diploma, I was so inspired. When I came to UMBC, I had already obtained 46 college credits, but circumstances in life caused me to put my education on hold. I always wanted to go back, but the timing never seemed right. However as they called out each name during that ceremony, I started envisioning myself walking across the stage. I came back to the office and within that first week, I began exploring my options. I am happy to say that I am currently enrolled at University of Maryland, University College pursing my Bachelor's degree in Communications.

Students in this course will read four influential works:
Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations, Plato's Republic, Marx and Engels' Communist Manifesto, and Max Weber's Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism.

These works can be seen as setting forth contrasting visions of society with differing ethical values and concepts of social order. Update at 7:30AM
UMBC’s Blackboard system is currently down. At approximately 12:30 am this morning we experienced a failure of our Blackboard server virtualization system (VMware). DoIT staff have worked with the vendor throughout the night to isolate the problem. As of 7:15 am the vendor has proposed a solution which should restore the Blackboard system in the next 2-3 hours (e.g. approximately 10:15AM). We apologize for the inconvenience and will update you as we know more.

          Update at 5:03AM
The Blackboard system went offline early on Monday morning. DoIT staff have isolated the issue to the server virtualization system (VMware) used to host the Blackboard system. We are currently working with the vendor to restore services. We will post additional information later today.
