Credit/Check Card Fraud

<Tagline>Students of UMBC Beware of Fradulent Purchases</Tagline>

Hello UMBC!!

I hope everyone's summer is going well!

Summer is usually a time of enjoyment and relaxation. Besides class, that was the case for me; however, that sort of changed when I checked my Chevy Chase Bank account.

Apparently I've become a victim of credit card fraud.

Whoever this mastermind is, he/she/it (?) managed to purchase a very expensive item from the apple online store. My guess it's a mac-- oh yeah, and even worse, the delivery wasn't to my house. So i don't even get to purchase the apple items i "purchased" Lovely.

And since the purchase was made from my check card, my balance has dropped immediately, unlike with a credit card, where you can cancel transactions.

OK so I'm sure credit card fraud happens pretty often, except a couple of my friends, who also study at UMBC told me about similar situations that occurred with them.

So, i've come to a possibly too immediate decision that this criminal is at UMBC. I'm not an FBI agent, although i do love acting like one when i'm bored haha, but the fact that 2 of my friends and I have become victims in the past month is not a mere coincidence,

Thus, the purpose of this news is to find out if anyone else at umbc has become a victim and to prevent further fraudulent purchases. Maybe if we all work together, we can track this CRIMINAL down.

I'd recommend not using your check card so frequently over the summer, as anyone can become a victim. Also, please check your online bank balances frequently so you can spot faulty transactions. lastly, CANCEL CANCEL CANCEL if you notice a purchase that you did not make.

Ok, I think i'm done for now :)

Enjoy the rest of you summer and be safe!

Wikipedia Offline Due to Power Outage

Wikipedia was offline for nearly twelve hours today, starting about 11:00am EDT. According to Wikipedia’s Twitter feed:

“Thanks for being patient, everyone. We’ve figured out the problem: power outage in our Florida data center. Slowly coming back online!”

This is not the first time that Wikimedia has experienced problems cause by power outages. In March 2010, Wikipedia was also knocked offline globally:

“Due to an overheating problem in our European data center many of our servers turned off to protect themselves. As this impacted all Wikipedia and other projects access from European users, we were forced to move all user traffic to our Florida cluster, for which we have a standard quick failover procedure in place, that changes our DNS entries. However, shortly after we did this failover switch, it turned out that this failover mechanism was now broken, causing the DNS resolution of Wikimedia sites to stop working globally. This problem was quickly resolved, but unfortunately it may take up to an hour before access is restored for everyone, due to caching effects.”

It looks like there are still failover problems.

It’s not just an academic question. Recently the community Q&A site Training Examples got quite a bit of visibility as a site

“Where data geeks ask and answer questions on machine learning, natural language processing, artificial intelligence, text analysis, information retrieval, search, data mining, statistical modeling, and data visualization!”

If you visit the site you will see that it closely follows the Stack Overflow design, complete with tags, reputation, badges, etc. It uses QSQA, which is free software licensed under GPL and implemented in Python using Django. Site creator Joseph Turian has mentioned a a desire to improve the site by applying machine learning and language processing techniques to its content.

So, how could Semantic Web technology be used to improve our own Q&A site? Add your suggestions here.

22 Yards

For many players on the UMBC Cricket Club, the sport runs in their blood. That passion, combined with the team’s motivation and strength, has helped them achieve a ranking of third in the nation by American College Cricket.

“It feels great to know that the hard work we have put in as a group over the years has finally paid off,” said President Anand Patel ’10 M.S., mechanical engineering.

The UMBC Cricket Club, also known as 22 Yards, was formed by cricket enthusiasts in 2004 and now has nearly 150 members. The game, which first originated in southern England in the 16th century, is similar to baseball with each team consisting of 11 players using a bat-and-ball method. UMBC’s team was recognized by the Sports Club Council in 2005 and is now a member of the Washington Metropolitan Cricket Board (WMCB), an organized Cricket League that follows standards set by the Marylebone Cricket Club.

“The team took some time to build and has grown stronger every season,” said Vice President Chirag Vani ’10 M.S., computer science. “UMBC is now considered a strong team in the league and starts most of its matches as favorites to win the game.”

The team is currently placed in the Division I of the WMCB league. They won the 2008 Round Robin Championship for Division I, the 2009 Board of Directors T20 Championship and finished third in the 2010 All America College Cricket Championship organized by American College Cricket.

Many on the team credit this success to the group’s collaborative spirit.

“The guys on the team are passionate about the sport and are willing to go that extra mile,” said Vani. “It has always been a team effort. The team owes its ranking and success to team spirit and the respect each member has for his peers.”
Although each player on the team has different experiences with the sport, many have been playing since childhood.
“Being born and raised in India, Cricket runs in my blood. I grew up playing cricket almost everyday with friends and was a part of my high school’s cricket team,” said Patel.

The 2010 season for the Cricket Club is now underway, and the team is holding strong – defeating some of the strongest teams in the 2010 All American College Cricket Championship.

Adelphi, Md. (July 1, 2010) - Research centers previously aligned with the former University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute (UMBI) officially begin their realignment today with other institutions within the University System of Maryland (USM).

This restructuring, approved by the USM Board of Regents in June 2009, is expected to pave the way for more multi-disciplinary and collaborative research across the system and increase access to outside funding for research. It is also expected to yield a higher level of technology transfer, commercialization, and business start-ups, and thereby advance economic development statewide.

The action followed the recommendations of an ad hoc committee of regents appointed by Board Chairman Clifford Kendall in February 2009 to review UMBI's mission and organization as well as consider alternative organization options.

Following is a summary of the newly created centers, once based at the former UMBI.

*Institute for Bioscience Biotechnology (IBBR). The IBBR is a research collaboration among the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP), the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The IBBR will build upon the resources and strengths of the former Center for Advance Research in Biotechnology (CARB) at the Universities at Shady Grove (USG, one of the USM's two system-wide regional centers) and the former Center for Biosystems Research (CBR) at UMCP.

Under IBBR's inaugural director, Donald L. Nuss, Ph.D., the center will focus predominantly on three complementary research areas: nanobiotechnology, drug and vaccine discovery, and pathobiology (the study of disease processes). UMCP will have administrative responsibility for the joint research center. The center will be headquartered at USG.

        * Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology (IMET). IMET is a joint USM research center at which the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC); the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES); and UMB will share facilities and resources. The partner institutions will collaboratively advance research and create technologies for the protection and restoration of marine systems and watersheds, sustainable use of their resources, and improvement of human health. Yoni Zohar, Ph.D., a UMBC faculty member, will serve as IMET interim director. Russell Hill, Ph.D., an UMCES faculty member, will serve as IMET interim associate director. The center will be based at the Columbus Center in downtown Baltimore at the former Center of Marine Biotechnology (COMB).

        * Medical Biotechnology Center (MBC) at UMB. The MBC is affiliated with the UMB campus, home of the University of Maryland School Of Medicine. The center's research will include health-related aspects of molecular biology and biotechnology, molecular medicine, and molecular genetics. In addition, research here will be enhanced by collaboration with the bioengineering and computational faculty at UMCP. W. Jonathan Lederer, M.D., Ph.D., a professor in the School of Medicine, will serve as interim director. The center will be based at the UMB campus.

        * Institute of Fluorescence (IOF). UMBC will have administrative responsibility for this former UMBI institute. Research is centered on the development of new leading-edge and existing fluorescence phenomena to resolve clinically, biologically and industrially important questions, such as technologies to facilitate early and rapid detection of bio-warfare agents. The institute will be based at the Columbus Center in downtown Baltimore. Chris D. Geddes, Ph.D., will serve as director.

        * Towson University Center for STEM Excellence. The center's main goal is to provide statewide leadership in supporting the USM's STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) initiatives. This center will integrate Towson University's STEM education programs to establish the Baltimore Excellence in STEM Teaching (BEST) program. It will be based at the Columbus Center in downtown Baltimore.

"With a focus on collaboration--across disciplines and across institutions--and with recognition of the exceptional talent within the UMBI community and the system's other institutions, this action positions USM to take fuller advantage of its system-wide strengths in the biosciences and to fuel the state's knowledge economy even more," said Kendall, the board chair.

A subcommittee of regents in 2009 reviewed UMBI's history and structure. It also solicited the views of individuals and groups, including UMBI administrators, faculty, staff, and graduate students; members of the UMBI Board of Visitors; external scientists and administrators from higher education and government; and representatives from business and economic development organizations.

As a result of its comprehensive review, the committee found that "the organization of UMBI as a geographically dispersed, free-standing entity has created intractable problems." These included the lack of scale of UMBI programs, isolation among UMBI's research centers, lack of a critical mass of graduate and undergraduate students involved in UMBI research, and administrative inefficiencies.

The board directed the USM office to complete the restructuring by June 30, 2010, the end of the 2010 fiscal year. The regents charged USM Chancellor William "Brit" Kirwan to work with the UMBI center directors and the appropriate institutional presidents on memoranda of understanding (MOUs) outlining details of the future operations and collaborations. The chancellor presented the MOUs to the board as they were negotiated during the fiscal year. The first approval occurred in October 2009 and all MOUs were approved by February 2010.

"The launch of these realigned centers provides a tremendous opportunity for the University System of Maryland to increase the volume and impact of its basic and applied research in the biosciences," Kirwan said. "This restructuring has the potential to double the research productivity of UMBI's current assets within five years. Once these assets are joined with activities system-wide, USM will play an even greater role in positioning the State of Maryland as a national and international leader in the biosciences."

AASHE Interview Series: Maggie Souder, Sustainability...

Full Title: AASHE Interview Series: Maggie Souder, Sustainability Coordinator, University of California, San Diego
This week’s interview is with Maggie Souder who works as the Sustainability Coordinator at the University of California, San Diego. Continue reading to learn more about Maggie's work promoting sustainability at UCSD, the advice she has for others in her position who are just getting started, and the different ways she is incorporating the social dimensions of sustainability into her work.

If you are interested in participating in the AASHE Interview Series or wish to nominate someone to participate please email me (niles@aashe.org). To read past interviews, click here.

**What campus sustainability initiatives are you working on at the moment?
**One of our key projects is the update of our 2008 Climate Action Plan (CAP). We are working to determine campus progress on the goals identified in the original plan. To this end, we are using the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education’s (AASHE) Sustainable Tracking Assessment and Rating System (STARS). The results of STARS will one of the tools provided to our CAP Stakeholder Focus Groups to determine next steps, new goals, and funding opportunities. Our new “UC San Diego Sustainable Food Services Plan” has just been completed and now we are setting up to develop a new comprehensive solid waste contract to help us move toward our “zero waste to landfill by 2020” goal. These are just a few of our many projects. More information about our various initiatives is available at our sustainability 2.0 website.

How did you get started in campus sustainability?
I spent much of my early career working at UC Riverside in fields related to protecting and cleaning up the environment (hazardous waste management, hazardous materials safety and compliance, environmental remediation, etc.). When I was first introduced to the field of sustainability, I was quite taken with the idea that as a society, we can and should develop and share ways to protect and preserve the environment now, as opposed to trying to repair what we have already compromised. I began working on sustainability at UC Riverside while still the environmental compliance and hazardous materials manager, and eventually accepted a position in which sustainability was my sole role.

What campus sustainability success are you most proud of?
I am very proud of the creation of the UC San Diego Sustainability Resource Center (the SRC is located in the Price Center at the heart of the UC San Diego campus and opened in fall 2009). I especially like working on projects in which the teamwork and passion of talented people make the “unlikely” a reality. In this particular case, we accomplished a beautiful, showcase facility on a bare-bones budget by finding community partners. It was really hard work, but with an amazing result.

What advice would you give to others in your position who are just getting started?
Networking is very important. Get as much experience as you can – even if it means volunteering. When you have opportunities to learn from people who are already in the field, ask questions and respect what they have to say. You won’t always agree with everyone about everything, but by combining the diversity and breadth of what you learn you will develop a broad framework for your own successful strategies.

In what area(s) do you see the biggest room for growth in the campus sustainability field?
This is a tough question because it has so many possible answers. It is likely that some of the technical and operational advances will have the greatest financial impact. However, one of the greatest challenges we face is engaging the community at large in order to achieve widespread behavioral change. I see a huge need to develop easy to use tools for the everyday person and then successfully educate, inform, and engage every target audience to become sustainability participants.

How are you incorporating the social dimensions of sustainability into your work?
Two examples are the new campus Fair Trade policy and our new campus Sustainable Food services Plan, both of which I believe will have significant social impacts. We work closely with our students, who are super champions for social change. It is important enough that the Student Sustainability Collective (SSC) has created a position for a student director in charge of civil and human rights.

How are you tracking your progress toward sustainability?
At the moment we are working to complete the STARS survey. We also have a campus group called the Sustainable Operations and Environmental Work Group comprised of program stakeholders, mostly at the operational level. This group reports to the Climate Solutions Work Group (CSWG), which consists of vice chancellors, deans, and directors. The CSWG also has graduate and undergraduate student representation.

Is there a particular insight (learning experience or “ah-ha” moment) you have had working on campus sustainability?
Probably the most important lesson I have learned is to present a large variety of methods and tools for individuals (or departments) to use to create their sustainability solutions. This allows people to become involved at their own pace, which builds ownership. It has been my experience that once a person has one or more small successes, they are much more willing to get increasingly involved and ultimately become sustainability champions.

How are your sustainability efforts funded?
Our permanent funding comes from the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Auxiliary & Plant Services, a unit of Resource Management and Planning. We also apply for and receive grant and partnership funds for many of our projects.

In what ways are students involved in your work?
Students contribute ideas, passion, drive, and so much more. We have over 60 student organizations on campus that do sustainability-related work. Of these, over 13 focus primarily on sustainability. In addition to providing the drive and ideas necessary to keep sustainability moving forward and creating rapid change, many students also intern on research and operations projects. We work to find the internships that best match the student. Our students contribute so much to the success of campus programs. For example, students help us certify our LEED EBOM and CI projects and are helping us complete the STARS survey.

How are you approaching the issues around carbon offsets and or renewable energy credits (RECs)?
UC San Diego is a member of the Chicago Climate Exchange and so is uniquely positioned to learn the ins and outs of carbon trading. Ideally, UC San Diego will avoid the need to purchase offset or RECs by maximizing campus energy efficiencies and on-site renewable energy generation.

How do you like to spend your free time?
I love the beach and spend as much time as possible in the water. I also rock climb, slackline, ride my horse and work in my small, organic garden. I volunteer regularly for beach cleanups and spend time giving dressage (riding) lessons to adults with challenging horses.
