Thomson Reuters has released their 2009 Journal Citation Report and we are happy to see that the Journal of Web Semantics impact factor has risen to 3.412, the fifth highest among the 116 journals in its category, “Computer Science, Information systems.” This is the highest impact factor score for the JWS to date.

Thomson Reuter’s journal impact factor is a measure of the frequency with which the average article in a journal has been cited in a particular year. The 2009 impact factor is computed as the citations received in 2009 from journals indexed by Thompson to all JWS articles published in 2007 and 2008, divided by the number of JWS “source items” published in 2007 and 2008.

Journal impact factors are not perfect measure of a journal’s quality, but are generally regarded as meaningful and, perhaps, the best objective measure we have. Our high ranking is a very good sign and a testament to the hard work of many people — area editors, editorial board, advisory board, reviewers, authors and especially Silke Werger, who runs the JWS editorial office. We thank everyone for all of the work — it’s made a difference.

Dr. John Breslin of the National University of Ireland, Galway will talk about his research on the "Social Semantic Web" at <strike>10:30am</strike> 1:00pm Tuesday, 22 June in ITE 325b ITE.

The Social Web, a platform where people are connecting through their shared objects of interest, is encountering some boundaries in the areas of information integration, portability, search, and demanding tasks like querying. The Semantic Web is an ideal platform for interlinking and performing operations on the diverse data available from Social Web "data silos", and has produced a variety of approaches to overcome some of the limitations with the Social Web. In this talk, Breslin will describe some applications of Semantic Web technologies to the Social Web. In particular, he will focus on the SIOC (Semantically-Interlinked Online Communities) framework which can be used to describe social website structures, enabling data exports and information sharing for social media contributions. SIOC is one of the metadata formats used in Drupal 7, and has been deployed in Yahoo! SearchMonkey/BOSS, OpenLink Data Spaces, BlogEngine.NET, Newsweek.com and various other sites/apps.

Dr. Breslin is a lecturer in the School of Engineering and Informatics at NUI Galway, Ireland. He is also co-leader of the Social Software Unit at DERI, NUI Galway, where he is researching the Social Semantic Web (he recently co-authored a book on this topic). Breslin is the founder of the SIOC project, which aims to interlink online communities with semantic technologies. He has received a number of web awards, including two IIA Net Visionary awards in 2005 and 2006 for the community website boards.ie Ltd., which he co-founded in 2000. Breslin is also an advisor to CrowdGather LLC, and owner/editor of Social Media Ltd..

Full Title: Infochimps provides API for their Twitter and Census datasets

Infochips now offers a query API for two interesting datasets: a Twitter collection and US Census data.

The Twitter data covers 500M tweets from 35M users collected between March 2006 and November 2009. The API currently included the following services.

Trstrank – a trust metric for Twitter users based on network centrality (see trst.me:

          http://api.infochimps.com/soc/net/tw/trstrank.json?screen_name=SarahPalinUSA

Wordbag – returns the 100 tokens (i.e., words) that a particular Twitter user tweets more often than the average Twitter user.

          http://api.infochimps.com/soc/net/tw/wordbag.json?screen_name=ladygaga

Influencer metrics – replies in/out and retweets in/out for a given user

          http://api.infochimps.com/soc/net/tw/influence.json?screen_name=algore

Conversations – find interactions between two users. Currently this just yields direct messages but will include retweets and mentions later. For example, check out conversations between Lady Gaga and Sarah Palin:

          http://api.infochimps.com/soc/net/tw/conversation.json?user_a_id=14230524&user_b_id=65493023

Pricing varies with use and ranges from Baboon” (free for 100K calls/month) to “Golden Ape” ($4000/month for 15M call/month).

Ralph Semmel, who completed his doctorate in computer science at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) in 1992, has been selected to become the next director of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab (APL).

APL, located in Laurel, Md., has close to 5,000 employees conducting and supporting research related to national defense and security.

Semmel, who finished his degree in 1992, focused his dissertation research at UMBC on the problem of how to get information from a database without knowing beforehand how the database is structured.

“He was an extraordinary student,” said James Mayfield, who was Semmel’s thesis advisor at UMBC. “He was not only academically rigorous, but he also accomplished a lot.”

Mayfield, who now works at Hopkins’ Human Language Technology Center of Excellence, said he’s also been impressed with the leadership skills Semmel has shown during his 23-year career with APL.

Semmel will begin his new position July 1, replacing Richard Roca to become the eighth director of APL in the laboratory’s 68-year history.

UMBC President Freeman Hrabowski praised Semmel’s accomplishments.

“We are extremely proud of Ralph Semmel and the leadership role he is taking at one of our nation’s foremost research centers.”

Semmel is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, and he completed master’s degrees at Hopkins and the University of Southern California.
