This Monday! SEB Cinema Series: OUTRAGE

I'm hoping that everyone has purchased their Raekwon tickets for tonight's event. If not, we'll be selling them at the door so bring your friends! The show is going to be great - I doubt you want to miss out.

In addition to our weekly movies, SEB hosts a cinema series that features thought-provoking works and documentaries on interesting topics while providing a forum for discussion. This year, the cinema series has been more successful than ever before and has proved to be a great networking event, connecting students with shared interests and passions. Last month, we showed Food Inc., a really intriguing documentary about the American food industry.

Monday, November 16, we will be showing Outrage, a documentary that puts a spotlight on closeted gay members of Congress that consistently support anti-gay legislation. Obviously, this is quite strange and raises a few questions. Is it ethical for the filmmakers to out these politicians? Is it okay for these politicians to vote the way they do, even though it's not consistent with the way they live their lives? Does this, in a sense, allow these legislators to live above the law?

These questions are all addressed in the film. I've been lucky enough to see most of it and thought that it was very well-done and interesting, to say the least. The subject is definitely controversial, but it's important for this campus to address these topics and share viewpoints. SO, you are all formally invited to attend this event! Please come out Monday at 7:30pm in the Skylight Lounge for film and discussion. Check out our website for the many other events offered this week and next week and I hope to see you tonight on the dance floor!

RAEKWON (of the Wu-Tang Clan) at UMBC THIS THURSDAY!

Hey UMBC - you have until Thursday to get your tickets for the Raekwon show! The show is Thursday night, November 12 in the UC Ballroom. Doors open at 8:30pm and the show will be starting at 9pm. You can still get your tickets at the Commons Information Center for $10 or $15 dollars if you'd like to get a voucher for Raekwon's newest album Only Built 4 Cuban Linx… Pt. II redeemable at the show! Make sure you have your red UMBC ID to get a ticket and buy one for a friend.

For those of you who don't know much about The Chef, Raekwon is a member of the Wu-Tang Clan. His newest album debuted at number 4 on the Billboard 200 and was number 2 on the Hip-Hop and R&B chart. If you're still not sold, take a look at these comments on the new album said by Raekwon himself:

It’s damn near 200% done. I wanna drop it on a major, but you’re definitely gonna get it by the summer of next year. By hook or crook. If I gotta do it independent, I gotta release it. I did a lot of hard work on this record and I refuse to throw it out and people be like, 'Yo, Rae, I ain’t know your shit was out.' Nah, I can’t afford for that to happen no more. That happened to me on The Lex Diamond Story. That happened to me on Immobilarity. I’m not going for it on this one. I’m not letting the industry control my destiny on this record. People been wanting this record for the last 10 years, so I gotta make sure that this shit is bulletproof.
So yeah, the show's going to be a lot of fun.
Humanities Forum lecture at UMBC by Steve Fuller, Professor of Sociology, University of Warwick, UK. The contest for authority to speak about science and technology, called the science wars, has often been framed in terms of CP Snows analysis. Fuller argues that few recent commentators are familiar with the historical trajectory that transports us from Snows earlier concerns to concerns of the present. He focuses on the curious alignments that have transpired over the course of the Science Wars. Note from Steve Fuller: "Also after the talk last night, I realized that I misspoke in the final question (which I think was asked by one of your deans), concerning the parallels between economic arguments for blue-skies science and for the arts. This was a really good point - but I botched it by giving the name of the wrong economist. It wasn't James Tobin (who happened to be a jazz aficionado!) but William Baumol. There's actually a handbook on the topic: www.elsevier.com
