While many can recognize obvious scams, they often struggle to explain why a message is manipulative, how tactics unfold over time, or what protective actions should follow. This gap reflects a limitation not only in knowledge, but in adversarial reasoning: the ability to infer intent, anticipate harm, and respond strategically under uncertainty. This project investigates whether asymmetric responsibility framing can deepen adolescents' adversarial reasoning in phishing contexts. We test whether positioning participants as accountable for guiding a vulnerable peer, rather than reasoning independently, reshapes how they analyze and respond to emerging threats. Grounded in theories of accountability and cognitive engagement, we examine how responsibility structures influence the depth and structure of reasoning.

We developed a staged, dual-conversation simulation modeling gradual phishing escalation. Participants were assigned either to a solo condition, where they independently assessed a suspicious interaction, or to a responsibility condition, where they advised a "buddy" engaged in an unfolding exchange. This design isolates the effect of responsibility framing beyond content exposure. We measured explanation depth, exploit identification accuracy, detection timing, and quality of protective recommendations while accounting for cognitive demand. Findings show that responsibility framing significantly improves explanation quality and protective guidance. These effects persist after controlling for effort and are strongest during gradual escalation, suggesting that accountability reshapes reasoning processes rather than simply increasing engagement. The talk will cover the theoretical framing, experimental design, and implications for AI-mediated cybersecurity education, along with open questions about scaffolding and generalizability to other digital risk domains.

Sanorita Dey is an assistant professor of computer science and electrical engineering at UMBC. Her research sits at the intersection of human-centered AI, STEM education, and ethical computing, with a focus on designing AI systems that meaningfully augment human learning processes. She develops AI-assisted learning environments that support critical thinking, adversarial reasoning, digital risk awareness, and reflective practice in STEM contexts. Her work emphasizes human-centric design principles, integrating empirical methods, experimental evaluation, and sociotechnical analysis to ensure AI tools are pedagogically grounded, ethically responsible, and developmentally appropriate. Across projects spanning cybersecurity education, AI-mediated mentorship, and responsible computing, Dr. Dey investigates how interaction design, accountability structures, and scaffolded dialogue can deepen learning outcomes while preserving learner agency. Her scholarship contributes to advancing equitable and reflective AI integration in K–12 and higher education STEM environments.

Host: Dr. Alan T.
Strategic Plan Update and Campus Communications and Engagement

Dear UMBC Community,

On behalf of the UMBC Strategic Plan Steering Committee, I am writing with an update on our progress developing the strategic plan and to outline next steps for communications and community engagement.

The Five Strategic Plan Pillars and Subgroups

The steering committee and its five pillar subgroups have met this semester to advance our work. The work of each subgroup will be informed by the insights, expertise, ideas, and perspectives of our campus community members. As a reminder, the five strategic plan pillars are:

Grow Student Opportunity and Success

Transform Teaching and Learning

Redefine Excellence in Research and Creative Achievement

Cultivate Organizational Innovation and Vitality

Strengthen Maryland and Its Communities

How to Stay Informed and Participate

Starting this month, the pillar subgroups will offer several engagement opportunities for the community. Here is how you can ensure you are updated and involved:

Follow the myUMBC Strategic Planning group to receive immediate updates on planned community engagement activities as they are scheduled.

Visit our updated strategic planning website. Starting this Friday, March 6, the site will feature a new feedback form to provide a direct way for you to share your voice with the committee.

Look for brief, regular email reminders about strategic planning news beginning this Friday.

Thank you for your interest in this process. The Strategic Plan Steering Committee looks forward to engaging with you and receiving your valuable input as we continue this critical planning process.

Warmest regards,

Upal Ghosh’s recent research on PCB contamination in fish highlighted by the Bay Journal

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), a group of likely carcinogenic chemicals, were banned in the U.S. in 1979. Yet because the chemicals were so widely used, and linger in the environment for so long, PCBs continue to be a major source of fish consumption advisories in Maryland and surrounding states.

A recent study by Professor Upal Ghosh, in the Department of Chemical, Biochemical, and Environmental Engineering, demonstrates the “unfinished work” of ridding our waters of PCB pollutants, the researchers write. The study was highlighted in a story in the Bay Journal.

The researchers, led by Ghosh and Research Assistant Professor Nathalie Lombard, analyzed PCB concentrations in fish that had been collected across 323 monitoring stations in Maryland over three decades. They identified five watersheds as highly impacted by PCBs, including the Upper Chesapeake Bay. Most impacted waterways have seen gradual, yet steady improvements over the years, with the exception of the Gunpowder-Patapsco near Baltimore, which showed no decrease in PCB pollution concentration levels in fish since 1996.

Overall, the study showed that the ban on PCBs and pollution remediation efforts implemented across Maryland and surrounding states have helped waterways recover, the researchers say, but more efforts are still needed.
