Correction: Service Suspension – Sunday, February 22, 2026 - Inclement Weather
Please check for final bus departures.
Dear Retrievers and Valued Transit Riders,
Due to the incoming inclement weather, UMBC’s main campus will close at 6pm on Sunday, February 22, 2026.UMBC Transit will suspend all bus services at 4:00 PM.
The final bus departures for the day will be as follows:

Paradise – 3:00 PM

Downtown – 3:30 PM

Arbutus – 3:30 PM

Catonsville – 3:00 PM

Route 40 – 2:30 PM

Storage System Performance Update
To all chip users,
The DoIT Research Computing & Data (RCD) Team is aware of the storage system performance issues that have impacted the chip cluster since earlier this month. For some users this is intermittent, for others the issue is persistent. These issues manifest as unusually long file read/write/load times for operations as simple as “ls” or “cd” when navigating the filesystem or as complicated as long slurm job runtimes. The RCD Team has been working with support vendors and other institutions to better understand the underlying problem that is affecting the storage system. We apologize for this interruption to productivity and want users to know that this is not expected behavior and that we are working to resolve the issue.
The team will give weekly updates and give substantive updates as they develop.

Zheng, Thompson, and Mohammed recognized at 610AT Awards
On February 4, 2026, the Code 610 Atmospheres (610AT) Peer Awards Ceremony 2026 was held at NASA
Goddard. Awardees were recognized in the following categories: Engage,
Differentiate, Execute, and Grow.
For the Differentiate category, GESTAR II congratulates Jianyu Zheng (613/UMBC),
who was recognized with Best Senior Author Publication Award. Dr. Zheng
led a 2026 paper titled "A novel retrieval of global dust optical depth and
effective diameter based on MODIS thermal infrared observations" published in Remote
Sensing of Environment. The committee specifically noted this study introduces "a
novel retrieval of global dust optical depth and effective diameter based on MODIS
thermal infrared observations."
For the Engage category, GESTAR II congratulates Anne Thompson (UMBC/610), who received
the Distinguished Collaboration Award, along with Dr. Debra Kollonige
(SSAI/614). "This award celebrates teams that excel in collaborative efforts
across labs, divisions, or external organizations."

Microwave Photonic Instrument (HyMPI) Team was recognized with the Strategic
