Deadline Extended for Proposals: Janet C. Rutledge Graduate Student Well-Being Award
The Graduate School invites UMBC faculty and staff (partnerships welcome) to apply for the inaugural Janet C. Rutledge Graduate Student Well-Being Award, which supports innovative, research-informed projects that promote sustainable graduate student well-being.
One proposal will be selected annually to receive up to $3,500 for programming costs and/or a stipend. Projects may address one or more areas of graduate student well-being, including sense of purpose, financial security, belonging, faculty mentoring, or student-centered academic structures. Priority will be given to projects with impact beyond the award period.
NEW Deadline to apply: February 27
Award announced: April 1
Award presented at the April 10th, 2026 GSA Awards Ceremony

Spring 2026 Deadlines
For those working toward completing your thesis this semester, please see the deadlines below!
Thesis-Option Candidates (NOTE: This should be done in the next week or so!)
Due two (2) months prior to the final exam. Submit
Final Master's Examination Committee form. The Graduate School will notify the Chairman of the Committee and the Dean's selected representative of the approved/appointed committee by returning the above form showing Graduate School approval and appointment of the Dean's representative.
Certification Readiness to Defend
Due two (2) weeks before the thesis defense. After all committee members have read the thesis, the Chairperson and the Graduate Program Director sign the
Certification of Readiness to Defend the Master's Thesis form.
The Graduate School will then send the Procedures for Examination of the Master's Thesis and the Report of the Examining Committee form to the Dean's representative of your committee.
Oral Defense: Examining Committee Report
Due within two (2) business days after the oral defense. The Representative for the Dean returns the completed Report of the Examining Committee form to the Graduate School.
Approval Sheet & Thesis: MAY 1
The signed thesis
approval sheet and electronic thesis must be submitted to
UMI/ProQuest by the dates per semester listed below. The original signed approval sheet must also be submitted to the Graduate School by May 1.
Commencement Ceremony: MAY 20

UMBC GRAs and Post-Doc Present at 106th AMS Meeting
The 106th American Meteorological Society (AMS) meeting was held in Houston, TX, January 25-29, 2026. This year, the meeting's theme was "Fast and Slow Thinking: The Human Factor in a Rapidly Changing World." Joshua Richards and Sharad Pandey, both GESTAR II Graduate Research Assistants and members of the Demoz Group (CNMS/UMBC), presented posters at the meeting; Joshua also had the opportunity to showcase his research in an oral presentation at the NOAA booth. Maurice Roots, Ph.D. '25, currently a post-doc with NASA's Postdoctoral Program (NPP) and former member of the Demoz Group, gave an oral presentation. Thanks to Dr. Belay Demoz for reporting from AMS.

Campus Guidance on Immigration Enforcement Information

Dear UMBC Community,
The UMBC Core Team, a team composed of senior leadership that meets weekly to discuss updates related to all facets of federal policy changes, is writing about two items created to provide additional support and clarity regarding federal immigration enforcement: 1) a general information card, should a UMBC community member encounter a federal immigration enforcement agent, and 2) FAQs, which expand upon the items on the card.
You can now find a printable version of the general information card on the
Federal Orders and Actions site; you will see a link to the printable card on the "Campus Communications" section of the home page. Click on the yellow box underneath the card that says "View General Information PDF" and you can print it from the screen that displays both the front and back of the card.
The related FAQs are the first questions and answers listed in the FAQs section on the same page.
The general information cards are currently being printed and will be available in several offices across campus soon; once the cards are available, we will send an update to campus.

Summer Camp 2026 Registration
Early registration/discount for UMBC Faculty/Staff members!
Good Afternoon UMBC Community,
Starting this year we will have an early registration to the UMBC Summer Day Camp for UMBC Faculty & Staff Members. General registration will begin on March 3rd at 12pm, UMBC Faculty & Staff will have access to register starting Sunday March 1, at 12pm. Information on how to register your CampDoc account can be found by accessing this information from our website: UMBC Summer Day Camp FAQ's.
UMBC Faculty & Staff members will receive a discount of $35 per week during registration using the code "STAFF 26". Discounts may not be combined or stacked.
We're excited to welcome campers back for another fun-filled summer with great activities and plenty of opportunities to learn and make friends. This summer we will be introducing some NEW themes such as: Decades Week, Space Week, Holiday Week, World Cup Week, and Game Show Week. While keeping some of our classic themes like Under the Big Top Week, At the Beach Week, Science and Conservation Week, and rounding out the summer with Color Wars!! All information such as pricing, dates, weekly descriptions, and more can be found on our website.
