Welcome back to the Spring semester!

Despite the challenges of the past year, the CAHSS research portfolio continues to grow in scope, complexity, and impact. CARAT is proud to work alongside you to advance these efforts. It's been nothing short of inspiring watching the resilience and brilliance of CAHSS faculty as we settle into new and renewed funding paradigms.

This Spring, we will continue to offer a robust slate of programming and support for both new and experienced grantees.

On February 18th and 19th, we will hold our first Mini Consultation sessions of the year. These 15-minute sessions can be used to discuss your research/creative achievement project ideas at any stage. They can be held in-person or virtually.

Sign Up Here!

We will also be offering additional targeted sessions on award management and grant opportunities, and we're especially excited about the launch of our new Roadmap for pre-award processes that we hope will make proposal development clearer, more transparent, and more efficient.

Stay tuned for more announcements on these offerings shortly!

Of course, please feel free to reach out to us at any time, whether you have a development request, are exploring a new funding opportunity, or are ready to begin the proposal submission process:

Volunteers Needed! BookFest '26

Welcome to the spring semester! It was definitely a bumpy start but I hope you're found your footing. I'm reaching out in the hopes of enlisting your help with UMBC's BookFest '26. I shared with you in the fall that I had received funds to support programming around the history of the book, which includes book making and book arts, libraries and archives, reading/readership studies, etc.

I'm excited to share that we have commitments from the One Maryland, One Book program (through Maryland Humanities) to host an event and from our Maryland State Librarian, Morgan Miller, for programming around library advocacy. We also have a book and maker fair planned. I have recently learned that we are allowed to fundraise for outside organizations, so I will be in touch with Freedom Reads and Friends of the Maryland Library for the Blind and Print Disabled.

The dates for these events are Tuesday, April 21 and Thursday, April 23 (URCAD is in between on the 22nd). While we have funds and sponsors to support this event, we could also use people power!

If you're interested in contributing in any way--big or small--to BookFest '26, I hope you'll plan to attend a brief information and planning session on Wednesday, February 25 from 12:00-1:00 p.m. on Webex. I will send out an invitation shortly. We're looking to form committees for each portion of the programming and for outreach, advertising, and program participation on the days themselves.

I'll look forward to hearing from you and continuing to build this event together!

Building Community, Repairing Harm

 <Tagline>Restorative Practices Resources from DOIE</Tagline>

As part of UMBC's ongoing commitment to fostering equitable and inclusive learning and working environments, we're excited to offer departments a meaningful opportunity to strengthen community, repair relationships, and build trust across campus through Restorative Practice sessions. These offerings include multiple circle types, facilitated by partners in the Division of Institutional Equity (DOIE), and tailored to the unique needs of faculty and staff departments.

We invite faculty, staff, supervisors, and department leaders to discover how restorative practices can empower your teams to cultivate cultural competency, equity, accountability, and community care. These collaborative sessions provide a dedicated space to enhance communication, deepen connections, and foster a more inclusive work environment. To learn more or explore how these practices might benefit your department, please reach out to the Community & Culture team at culture@umbc.edu.

DOIE RESTORATIVE OFFERINGS

Restorative circles, community conversations, and dialogues

Circles provide structured, equitable spaces for dialogue and connection. Whether used proactively to build community or responsively to address harm, circles honor the voices and experiences of all participants through guided conversation. DOIE offers various circle types, including community-building, learning, restorative dialogue, healing, resetting, and re-entry circles to support faculty and staff (individuals, groups, departments).

Reach out for DOIE support when: Your department wants to strengthen culture proactively, address interpersonal tensions or misunderstandings, process the impact of bias incidents or crises, support colleague reintegration after conflict or leave, or explore challenging topics related to equity and inclusion.

Restorative Conferences: Formal Support for Complex Situations

In DOIE, restorative conferences are structured, facilitated meetings designed to address significant harm, policy violations, or formal workplace conflicts, particularly when navigating identity-based issues, community climate, and cultural differences. These conferences bring together affected parties with institutional representatives to repair relationships, establish accountability, and create clear paths forward.

Reach out for DOIE support when: There has been a formal complaint, policy violation, or significant identity-based interpersonal harm; parties are ready to engage voluntarily in structured dialogue; institutional representatives need to be part of the resolution process; or clear, documented agreements and follow-up are essential.

Group Facilitation: Retreats, Listening Sessions & More

DOIE provides customized facilitation for departmental retreats, listening sessions, and other gatherings where skilled, restorative facilitation helps groups navigate complexity and move toward shared goals, particularly when navigating identity-based issues, community climate, and cultural differences.

Reach out for DOIE support when: Your department is planning a retreat and needs skilled facilitation; you want to gather qualitative feedback through listening sessions or town halls; your team is navigating organizational change or climate concerns; or you need support creating inclusive dialogue spaces for sensitive or complex topics.

*Available Facilitators: Jasmine A. Lee, Associate Vice President for Community & Culture/Co-Director of Social Justice Dialogue, and Sy Simms, Learning and Development Specialist, and other trained members of the Community & Culture team and UMBC campus.

Learn More & Get Involved

We encourage all campus partners to take advantage of these opportunities to strengthen our shared culture of equity and belonging.

Happy Monday: Belonging, Hope, and Our Shared Responsibility

Dear UMBC Community,

This weekend, I had the opportunity to hear Karsonya Wise Whitehead, Ph.D. ’09, widely known as “Dr. Kaye,” who earned her doctorate in language, literacy, and culture from UMBC. She is a powerful voice for equity and community in Baltimore and beyond, and a nationally recognized educator, author, and award-winning radio host. She reminded us of the importance of hoping even when it is hard, staying committed to the long work of building inclusive and just communities, and having the courage to live our values with integrity and purpose.

Her words stayed with me as I reflected on this moment we are living in together. Many people are carrying uncertainty, fatigue, and unease. In times like these, recognizing and honoring one another’s humanity is more important than ever.

I am proud to lead this institution not because we do everything perfectly, but because we are striving to become a place where there is no hierarchy of human value, and I see progress daily. I see large and small efforts to listen, learn, and move us steadily forward. This work happens through teaching and research, service and leadership, and daily acts of care and consideration. It is essential to fulfilling our mission and enabling each member of our community to do their very best work.

In my role, I aspire to lead in ways that will reflect our shared belief in excellence that comes from each of us showing up fully as ourselves and making space for others to do the same. I hope to lead in a way that creates an environment where the value of every individual is clear, where support is real, and where each of you is empowered to thrive in teaching, research, and service.

As we begin this new week, please know this: You belong here. Your work matters. Your presence makes a difference. And this is what gives me hope—not simply naming inclusive excellence, but the actions each of us takes every day to make that a reality. I am excited about the work ahead and honored to be your partner in it.

With deep appreciation,

President Valerie Sheares Ashby
