Welcome Back Retrievers!!

The new semester is officially in full swing, and the Sherman Center is here to help you navigate it successfully!!

With the wintry conditions that delayed our in-person start by a week, it might feel like we're already racing to catch up. But as we transition from "winter mode" back into the swing of the spring semester, remember that it's okay to take a moment to find your footing. We may be starting a little later than planned, but we are moving forward together, and we will surely find our rhythm in no time.

Master Your Time - Now is the perfect time to get those sticky notes out and map out your priorities. Breaking down your semester now prevents the "mid-semester crunch" later.

Health is Wealth - Academic success is only possible when you take care of yourself. Prioritize rest, stay hydrated, and don't hesitate to lean on your community for support.

As you settle into your new schedule, here are a few things to keep in mind for a successful start:

Important Deadline: The last day to add or drop classes is February 13th. Take this week to ensure your course load feels balanced and manageable.

Let's make this your best semester yet!!

In partnership with Sharemeals, this app is an upgrade from our previous "Where's Free Food At" notification board, and allows students, staff, and faculty to post about food left over at campus wide events!

In addition, be sure to put the start and end time for when food is available for grabs, not when the event itself starts and ends.

Post and Event Promotion on myUMBC

<Tagline>How to share and promote your announcements on myUMBC</Tagline>

Have you ever wanted to promote your club, group, or organization's event or announcement on the front page of myUMBC? Well, here is a quick guide on what you need to know.

The promotion feature allows you to share content from your myUMBC group to all myUMBC users on the front page, reaching a much wider audience than if it were just posted to a group's page. This is a free feature for departments and official student organizations to use that operates on a first-come, first-served basis.

Before you are able to promote content to the front page of myUMBC, there are a few requirements that must be met.

The post or content you wish to promote must be published in an official and public myUMBC group run by a UMBC department or student organization

To have the option to promote content, you must be an admin of the group from which the content originates. This does not mean you have to be the creator of the post.

There must be an approved thumbnail image to go along with the post

The content should be appropriate for all UMBC audiences

Content can be promoted by a group once every 3 days, and only 10 promotions can be scheduled in advance

If these requirements are met, you should have no trouble promoting your content.

To start, you will need to create a post as normal on myUMBC, including your text, thumbnails, alt-text, and any relevant tags. After you hit publish on your post, you may have to refresh the page or navigate to the main page of your group to find the post.

Here you should see a box on the right side with the posts analytics as well as buttons to "Edit", "Copy", "Mark Important", and "Pin". If you are an admin for this group and it qualifies as a department or official student organization, then you should see a purple button labeled "Promote".

From here, you will be able to pick which day you would like to promote your content. You will see what slots are available. Each day has 4 slots, and you have the ability to make 10 selections for promotions.

If you wish to reserve a spot but don't have your content fully completed, you can fill a future slot with placeholder information to ensure that it won't be taken. Just make sure to update the post with your content before the date it is scheduled to be promoted or posted.

After these are chosen, they can be managed under the "Promotions" tab on your myUMBC Group page. This page will be useful if you wish to cancel posts, make changes to future promotions, or if you signed up for slots using placeholder information.

As always, remember to look over your post to ensure all information is correct and that any approvals needed regarding posting or thumbnails are received.

We encourage and appreciate any and all feedback from users. If you have any questions or suggestions on how to improve myUMBC, please contact B. Collier Jones at bcjones@umbc.edu or schedule a meeting on Google Calendar.

12-1:30 pm Friday, Febuary 6, 2026
ITE 325b, UMBC (Lunch provided!)

talk video

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is concerned with the development of computer programs that emulate the intelligence of humans, i.e., AI is deeply concerned with the understanding of human problem-solving strategies and incorporating (or simulating) these strategies into computer programs. Since the 1950s, when the term AI was coined, there has been considerable progress in this area. The 1980s were dominated by the rise of knowledge-based systems, which is also called "the first wave." Advancements in computer hardware facilitated multilayered neural networks, which led to significant improvements in machine learning for certain classes of problems in the 2000s. This was the "second wave."

Now, we are witnessing the "third wave," which will include a combination of neural networks and knowledge structures. In the talk, I will provide a brief overview of AI methods and discuss how these methods can be used to address problems in the Manufacturing sector. Topics will include: the derivation-formation spectrum of problem solving, knowledge-based expert systems, neural networks and other machine learning techniques, and their applications in Manufacturing (Big M).

Dr. Ram D. Sriram is the Chief of the Software and Systems Division at the National Institute of Standards and Technology Information Technology Laboratory.
