  <Title>Accepting Applications: Spring 2026 Global Asias Student Showcase Workshop</Title>
  <Tagline>Apply to be part of this exhibit of creative student works!</Tagline>
  <Body>

    <p><img src="https://asianstudies.umbc.edu/wp-content/uploads/sites/74/2026/01/Global-asias-SPRING-2026-workshop.png" alt="poster image describing student showcase workshop application details." style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;"></p>
    <p>The Global Asias Initiative (GAI) at UMBC is holding a workshop to help support and curate an exhibit of creative works produced by students that relate and help illustrate understandings and relationalities to Asia as understood through a Global Asias framework. In the workshop, students will read and unpack a text written by Tina Chen (<a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Z6Kekh9G911zCaSCOWY5GALf_4ga6xyF/view?usp=drive_link" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Global Asias: Method, Architecture, and Praxis</a>) in order to better understand Global Asias, a theoretical, multidisciplinary framework that brings together the fields of Asian American and Asian Studies. We will work together to create an exhibit of student work that translates and explains Global Asias as an analytical lens to the campus and wider public. </p>
    <p>Students will arrive to the first session with a project they have either completed in a prior class or with a project in mind as well as having read an assigned text on Global Asias. Together with faculty mentors, we will discuss the text and clarify any questions in order to strengthen our collective understanding of the Global Asias framework.</p>
    <p>In the second session, students will work to hone their project and work on writing artist statements that explain to a public audience how their piece reflects Global Asias–what Global Asias concept(s) does their piece draw on? How can we see that concept or process illustrated or represented in the piece? </p>
    <p>Participating in this workshop will help strengthen public writing skills, hone reading skills, and is an opportunity you can put on your resume/CV. </p>
    <p>Please make sure to keep available 5/1 for the exhibition install date and 5/4 for the Exhibition Reception.  </p>

    <div><em>As you prepare to return to UMBC, and start in-person classes on Wednesday, January 28th, we encourage you, when feasible, to communicate directly with your faculty if you anticipate needing flexibility. The earlier you are able to share your circumstances, the better. If you are unable to communicate in advance, following up with your faculty as soon as you are able to do so is also advisable.</em></div>

    <strong>Navid Goudarzi</strong>, Ph.D. ’14, mechanical engineering, remembers UMBC for its diversity and supportive academic environment, as well as its strong connection to the broader University of Maryland system, which enabled interdisciplinary engagement across campuses. Now an assistant professor of mechanical engineering at the Washkewicz College of Engineering at Cleveland State University, Goudzari was recently honored with a prestigious <a href="https://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/show-award/?AWD_ID=2443475&amp;HistoricalAwards=false" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">National Science Foundation CAREER Award</a>. The CAREER Award recognizes early-career faculty who demonstrate exceptional potential to integrate research, education, and broader societal impact.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>During his time in Maryland, Goudzari worked with UMBC professor of mechanical engineering <a href="https://me.umbc.edu/dr-weidong-zhu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Weidong Zhu</a> and University of Maryland, College Park mechanical engineering professor <a href="https://me.umd.edu/clark/faculty/582/Peter-Sandborn" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Peter Sandborn</a>. </div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Goudarzi currently leads the <a href="https://m3tfluid-lab.github.io/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Multiscale Multiphysics Modeling and Data-Driven Analysis of Thermofluids (M3TFluiD) Lab</a> and serves as co-director of the <a href="https://academic.csuohio.edu/iers-center/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Center for Integrated Modeling for Energy, Resiliency, and Sustainability (IERS)</a> at Cleveland State University. His research focuses on complex flow behavior in engineered and environmental systems, with applications to energy systems, next-generation unmanned aerial vehicles, high-performance buildings, resilient infrastructure, and more.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Read more about his NSF CAREER Award-supported research in this <a href="https://engineering.csuohio.edu/dean/washkewicz-magazine" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Washkewicz Magazine article</a> (2025-2026 edition, pages 8-11).</div>

    <div><strong><em>What I remember most about my time at UMBC is the diverse and supportive environment created by the broader University of Maryland system. Being part of a community that brings together individuals from a wide range of technical, cultural, and personal backgrounds broadened my perspectives and helped shape my approach to research, teaching, and mentorship. The academic setting encouraged exploration and interdisciplinary thinking, and I appreciated the flexibility and institutional encouragement that allowed me to pursue new research directions during my doctoral studies. This freedom to grow as an independent researcher played a significant role in laying the foundation for my career. </em>– Dr. Navid Goudzari</strong></div>

        <p>"I am very excited to be working with these talented staff members this semester!" said Briana Lawson, director of staff culture and professional wellbeing. "Ready to Lead supports DoSA's theme for the year, 'aligning for impact,' with a focus on people development across the division. The program is uniquely crafted to create a dynamic, inclusive, and mission-driven leadership culture. Our goal is to empower employees to drive meaningful student impact through enhanced skills, strategic thinking, and collaborative leadership."</p>
        <p>Ready to Lead, launched in spring 2025, is an opportunity for staff to participate in meetings with higher education leaders, receive executive coaching, and identify a leadership challenge to explore. Staff were chosen through an application process in fall 2025.</p>
