Maina recognized with Goddard Center Director's Award

In November 2025, the 610 Robert H. Goddard Honor Award Winners were announced. Among them was Fadji Maina (617/UMBC), who received the Center Director's Award, "For significant contributions to NASA’s efforts to characterize regional and global water cycle." We present select items from her nomination and congratulate her on this well-deserved recognition!

"As an early career hydrologist, Dr. Maina has demonstrated exceptional dedication to addressing complex, high-impact challenges at the intersection of climate, water, and society. Her research focuses on quantifying changes in Earth's hydrological cycle caused by climate change and human activity ... Using cutting-edge modeling techniques and satellite data from NASA missions ... , Dr. Maina has delivered transformative insights that directly contribute to NASA's mission to observe and understand Earth systems. [Her] work on the High Mountain Asia region — a vital water source for over a billion people — exemplifies her scientific leadership and commitment to excellence. ... In landmark [publications] in Earth's Future and Nature Communications, she was the first to quantify changes in rain-on-snow events, revealing how altered precipitation patterns are increasing the risk of floods and landslides. These findings have major impacts on shaping the broader scientific understanding of climate impacts on water systems. ...

Dr. Maina is a key contributor in NASA's Water Insight project, an Earth science-to-action effort aimed at delivering reliable, high-resolution water cycle information across North and Central America. Her leadership in developing 1-kilometer scale hydrological datasets has directly improved our ability to serve partners and stakeholders with actionable, policy-relevant information. [She] has led the development of a new groundwater modeling capability within NASA's Land Information System — an innovation that significantly enhances the integration of satellite data from GRACE, GRACE-FO and future Mass Change missions into decision-making tools used globally. Over the past four years, she has authored 13 first-author publications in high-impact journals, reflecting both her productivity and the influence of her research.

... As a member of the [AMS's] Hydrology Committee, she contributes to shaping the future of the discipline. Her outreach and advocacy — especially as a scientist from Niger — have inspired young researchers around the world and advanced NASA's broader commitment to global engagement. Her exceptional work ethic, innovative mindset, and mission-driven focus have significantly advanced the Center's objectives and created lasting impact across NASA programs and beyond."

Many of Dr. Maina's publications are listed on her NASA Goddard page.

(Note, due to the shutdown in October - November 2025 and the AGU Fall Meeting in December, an actual ceremony was not held this year.)

Celebrating National Braille Literacy Month

  <Tagline>Empowering Access Through Braille</Tagline>

January is Braille Literacy Month, and January 4th marks World Braille Day, honoring the birthday of Louis Braille, the inventor of the Braille code. This month is all about raising awareness of the importance of braille literacy and recognizing how braille supports independence, education, and access for people with visual impairments and beyond.

When many people hear "braille," they think only of blindness, but braille benefits individuals with low vision, dual sensory loss, and multiple disabilities.

Here are 6 things you may not know about Braille:

Louis Braille was just 15 years old when he invented Braille

Braille is a tactile code, not a language—many languages can be read and written in Braille

A braille cell is made up of 6 raised dots

Braille includes letters, numbers, punctuation, music notation, and even formatting like bold and italics

Braille takes up more space than print—Webster's Unabridged Dictionary is 72 volumes in braille

There are two levels of braille: uncontracted (letter-by-letter) and contracted (a shorthand version)

Technology & Braille: Today, refreshable braille screens and other assistive technology make braille more accessible digitally than ever. These tools allow people with visual impairments to read digital content, access coursework, and navigate the world in real time, connecting braille literacy to modern digital accessibility.
Want to try it yourself? Here's a link to type and see your name in Braille.

As you go about campus this month, take a moment to notice braille on signs, elevators, and other materials. These small adaptations make a big difference in accessibility and independence. Let's celebrate Braille literacy, accessibility, and inclusive learning this month and all year long.

Fall 2025 Effort Report Certification is DUE March 31, 2026

  <Tagline>Fall 2025 Effort Reporting is Open</Tagline>

To the UMBC Research and Creative Achievement Community,

Effort Reports for Fall 2025 are available and ready for certification.

The Fall 2025 period includes Payroll 2026‐001 through Payroll 2026‐014 (from June 29, 2025 through January 10, 2026). Certifications are due March 31, 2026.

Please remember that Effort Reports are both a Compliance Tool and a Grants Management Tool. After reviewing payroll charges, work with your business managers if any changes are needed. Payroll cost transfers (retros) should be processed prior to certification of Effort Reports as retros will re‐open any previously certified effort due to adjustments.

To find out whether you have open effort reports for Fall 2025 (see page 6, Year: 2025 Period: Fall) and to learn how to certify them, see the attached updated Effort Report Quick Guide with screenshots for your convenience. This guide provides detailed instructions on how to access the Effort Reports.

In order for UMBC to be in compliance, please check Open effort reports for previous periods under your PI/Certifier ID name to ensure they have been Finalized. Any payroll cost transfers (retros) for previous periods will re-open effort reports and they need to be certified and finalized again.

*NOTE: If you are new to Effort Report certification, please see page 13, FAQ #1 in the Quick Guide for information on how to gain certification access. You will not be able to certify without proper access in PeopleSoft.

*NOTE: If the PI on the project is not available to certify due to termination, sabbatical, etc. see page 13, FAQ #2 in the Quick Guide for instructions. Requests must come directly from the department chair/dean/director.
