December 1st is World AIDS Day

<Tagline>Stop the Stigma. Start the Conversation.</Tagline>

World AIDS Day is a global movement dedicated to uniting communities in the fight against HIV, honoring the lives lost to AIDS-related illnesses, and standing in solidarity with people living with HIV. Since 1988, this day has brought people together to confront stigma, share knowledge, and reaffirm our commitment to ending the HIV epidemic.

Globally, an estimated 38 million people are living with HIV. More than 35 million people have died of HIV or AIDS-related illnesses over the past four decades, making it one of the most significant public health challenges in modern history. Thanks to medical advancements, individuals living with HIV today can live long, healthy lives with proper treatment. We now have the tools to stop HIV transmission entirely, yet stigma and misinformation remain major barriers to prevention, care, and equity.

The Red Ribbon, created in 1991 by a group of artists seeking a symbol of compassion and support, has become the universal emblem of HIV awareness. Its bold red color represents the heart, passion, and commitment to supporting those affected by HIV.

World AIDS Day is an opportunity to highlight the real experiences of people living with HIV, celebrate the resilience of affected communities, and encourage the leadership necessary to end stigma and improve access to prevention and care.

The 2025 World AIDS Day program will be held:

This event includes free, anonymous HIV testing, educational opportunities for reducing risk, and guidance on how to help break the stigma around HIV testing. Participants may also contribute to a panel honoring the AIDS Memorial Quilt, remembering and celebrating the unique lives of those who have been lost to HIV/AIDS.

This event is open to all individuals in accordance with UMBC's nondiscrimination policies.

Guided by the theme, "Honoring the Past, Celebrating the Present, Embracing the Future," this event brings together residents, advocates, and partners for an uplifting afternoon of education, reflection, and celebration.
The program features keynote speaker Jason E. Farley and special awards recognizing local leaders who have dedicated their efforts to eradicating HIV/AIDS, advancing health equity, and expanding access to care. Attendees will experience moving tributes, personal stories, and moments that honor the resilience and contributions of those on the frontlines.
Guests will also enjoy a complimentary lunch, live entertainment, and opportunities to connect with advocates, service providers, and organizations addressing social determinants of health.
This Wednesday, December 3, 2025 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the LLC Conference Room (SHER 202A), we will hold the third session in our Public Research Presentation series.

Maria Julia Petronilho Peixoto Soares: "Race, crime and community: The tensions between black music and culture in North and South America"

Abstract: The research aims to investigate and understand the tensions within Black social networks permeated by music in North and South America. It is important to emphasize that each relationship established in these contexts is also influenced by elements such as race and class and, therefore, impacted by social institutions such as notions of crime and legality. The focus is to understand how all these factors contribute to the political—as well as cultural—perspective of Black music communities in the diaspora.

Marian Silva Viola: "Aesthetic formulations of the black Brazilian author Miriam Alves to understand how her formal choices illuminate contemporary racial relations in Brazil and challenge existing sociological perspectives on Black Literature"

Abstract: The research seeks to analyze the aesthetic formulations present in the works of the Black Brazilian author Miriam Alves, in order to ascertain whether such formulations could contribute to the understanding of contemporary racial relations in Brazil. It investigates, based on a sociological analysis of Literature combined with an analysis of the writer's trajectory, the possible connections between her literary practice (and the formal choices made by the author, going beyond a simple thematic analysis of her works) and the social environment in which this art breathes and gains corporeality. The study intends to test the limits of this hypothesis and explore the ways these correlations might be established, offering relevant contributions to the fields of Sociology of Culture and Racial Relations. To this end, it establishes a dialogue with the main works of intellectuals from both Sociology and Literary Criticism to observe the position that aesthetic dispositions in literary works—commonly classified as belonging to the milieu of 'Black Literature'—occupied in their analyses. It expects to find, at the end of the research, contingencies that may both converge with and challenge these positions, thereby contributing to the consideration of other factors within a literary work in the analysis of productions by Black writers in Brazil.

This event is open for full participation by all individuals regardless of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, or any other protected category under applicable federal law, state law, and the University's nondiscrimination policy.

Happy Monday!

  <Tagline>Our time to lead</Tagline>

Dear UMBC Community,

In the weeks leading up to the Thanksgiving holiday, I had the opportunity to attend two gatherings of higher education leaders, including the annual meeting of the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities, where I am a member of its Council of Presidents.

In those settings, as you might imagine, there was a great deal of conversation about the current pivotal moment for higher education as all of our institutions navigate the effects of ongoing federal actions, as well as a host of other often interconnected challenges and opportunities. The gatherings were substantive and important in many ways. For me, a key takeaway was, frankly, that amid all the worry out there, this is a time for UMBC to lead.

Our position is strong because our values and purpose are so clear. That clarity is a privilege as much as it is a responsibility in that we can remain true to our core value of inclusive excellence and the public purpose it serves as we advocate for higher education broadly.

We can also remain true to our values as we set a course for UMBC's future, with the humility to know we can do better. That is a strength as well. Maybe it is related to UMBC's age: we are old enough to know who we are and young enough to still change and grow. What I know is that there is nowhere I would rather be in this moment, no institution I would rather be serving, than UMBC.

Sincerely,

President Valerie Sheares Ashby

Global Learning Lab Spring 2026 Announcement

Dear UMBC faculty:

We are thrilled to announce the call for applications for the UMBC Global Learning Lab, a joint initiative of the Office of the Provost and the Center for Global Engagement (CGE) that aims to develop a faculty learning community dedicated to increasing student access to global learning opportunities. The Global Learning Lab is a cohort-style, semester-long program that provides a framework for faculty to exchange best practices and innovative models for expanding access to global learning opportunities over a series of four workshops. This program is made possible with funding from the Office of the Provost.

All full-time faculty—tenured/tenure-track, non-tenure-track—and adjuncts (minimum of six semesters at UMBC) are invited to apply for the Spring 2026 cohort. Faculty accepted into the Lab must commit to attending each of the workshops below and producing one project to present at the conclusion of the lab. Faculty will receive a $1,500 professional development stipend to support their intended project. The funds will be transferred to the fellow's home department upon successful completion of the Spring 2026 Global Learning Lab. Applicants must discuss their intended project with their department chairs prior to applying.

Workshop #1: Friday, February 6, from 9 AM - 12 PM

Internationalization of the Curriculum Through Curricular Mapping will focus on identifying the ideal term(s), course(s), location(s)/partner(s) for students to participate in a global learning experience.

Workshop #2: Friday, February 27, from 9 AM - 12 PM

Developing a Faculty-Led Study Abroad Program will focus on building a study abroad program using best practices to support student learning and the development of skills, attitudes, and experiences that promote global and cultural competency.

Workshop #3: Friday, March 27, from 9 AM - 12 PM

Global Learning for All: Virtual Exchange will focus on how to foster opportunities to develop cultural and global competencies in an existing course through virtual exchanges known as Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL).

Workshop #4: Friday, May 1, from 9 AM - 12 PM

Global Learning Lab Project Presentations will provide an opportunity for faculty in the lab to present their global learning project (i.e. curricular mapping for their department, faculty-led study abroad program proposal, or COIL course).

Important

The ideal faculty cohort will represent the diversity of UMBC programs and a diversity of intended projects. As such, if more than one faculty member from a specific department is applying, they are encouraged to speak with their colleagues to ensure their intended projects are complementary (i.e. one faculty member may propose to work on a virtual exchange/COIL and another will work on proposing a faculty-led study abroad program).

The deadline to apply for the Spring 2026 cohort is 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, December 18, 2025. Faculty will be notified about the status of their application by Friday, January 16, 2026. Please note that in-person attendance at each workshop is required. All applicants should save these workshop dates now.

Questions? Contact Katie Heird at kheird1@umbc.edu at the Center for Global Engagement.
