The students embark on their MIT education with individual ambitions –  to engineer infrastructure in Tanzania; to secure a better life for family in Nigeria; to contribute to post-genocide reconstruction in Rwanda; to advance democracy in Zimbabwe. Their missions are distinct, but fueled by a common goal: to become agents of positive change back home.</p><p>While their dreams are anchored in the societies they have left, their daily realities are defined by America – by the immediate challenges in their MIT classrooms, and by the larger social issues confronting the world beyond those classrooms. Their new environment demands they adapt. Over an intimate, decade-long journey spanning two continents, students and filmmaker alike are forced to decide how much of America to absorb, how much of Africa to hold on to, and how to reconcile teenage ideals with the truths they discover about the world and themselves."</p><p> </p></div><div><div><strong>After the films, hear directly from UMBC international students about their experiences as Retrievers.</strong></div></div><div><strong>This event is a collaboration with POV, PBS' award-winning nonfiction film series.  <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/iew/events/147589/2310b/ca27b57071b0d7d42548199084678c92/web/link?link=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.pbs.org%2Fpov%2F" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">https://www.pbs.org/pov/</a></strong></div></div></div></div></div></div></div><div><br></div><div><br></div><h5>For more IEW events, <strong><a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/iew" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">follow us on myUMBC</a> or visit <a href="http://www.cge.umbc.edu/iew" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">www.cge.umbc.edu/iew</a></strong></h5></div>

    <Title>Student Internship Spotlight: Constellation</Title>
    <Tagline>&#8216;27 Chemical Engineering - Environmental &amp; Sustainability</Tagline>

<div class="html-content"><h5>Gus Ross<br>‘27 Chemical Engineering - Environmental Engineering &amp; Sustainability Track</h5><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><strong>Where was your internship?</strong></div><div>Constellation</div><div><br></div><div><strong>When was your internship?</strong></div><div>May 2025 to August 2025</div><div><br></div><div><strong>What was the focus of your internship?</strong></div><div>My focus was working in Constellation's nuclear power plant located in Lusby, MD in an intern capacity for the Chemistry department.</div><div><br></div><div><strong>What was the best part of your internship OR what was the biggest learning moment of your internship?</strong></div><div>The best part of my summer internship was getting to do hands-on work in the field. It was a wonderful change of pace from a semester of textbook work. I was able to apply what I had learned during my time at UMBC in order to assist the chemists when they were taking samples in the plant and bringing it back to the lab for analysis. I enjoyed working with the chemists to learn how they take samples in a radioactive environment and what the results of each sample means for the health of the plant. It was a wonderful learning experience seeing just how safe and structured work in a nuclear power plant is.</div><div><br></div><div><strong>What advice do you have for students who are interested in getting an internship?</strong></div><div>My advice for anyone interested in doing research or internship work is to not be afraid to branch out. Just because you are studying one specific subject, does not mean you won't be able to apply what you have learned elsewhere. With that, you should not fear rejection either as you keep your options expanded. You might find that you really do enjoy air quality work over fabric synthesis or vice versa. Just being open and willing to learn new things will take you most of the way.</div><div><br></div><div><strong>What are your goals after graduation?</strong></div><div>My goal after graduating in a few years is to continue working in the energy sector. My passion is making a difference in the clean production of electricity.</div><div><br></div><div><strong>Are you a member of any clubs/campus organizations?</strong></div><div>I am a student ambassador for CBEE and attend "American Chemical Society" club meetings.</div><div><br></div></div>
