Know Your Worth: Researching Salaries
Learn how to navigate offers and negotiate with confidence.
Landing a job offer is exciting — but before you accept,
it's essential to understand what that offer really means. Salary negotiation
isn't just about the number on your paycheck; it's about knowing your value,
understanding industry standards, and ensuring you're being compensated fairly
for your skills and experience.
1. Do Your Homework Before You Negotiate
Before discussing salary, research what professionals in
your field typically earn. Use reliable sites like Glassdoor, Salary.com, PayScale, Vault, and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational
Outlook Handbook to find salary ranges based on job title, location, and
experience level. Knowing these figures helps you confidently advocate for
yourself during negotiations.
2. Consider the Whole Offer
While salary is important, it's only one part of your total
compensation package. Benefits like health insurance, retirement contributions,
paid time off, and flexible work options can significantly impact your overall
satisfaction and financial well-being. If you're interested in an advanced
degree, tuition benefits are an option as well. Don't overlook these when
comparing offers.
3. Be Strategic About Timing
The best time to discuss salary is after you've
received an offer but before you've accepted it. Once an employer has
decided you're their top choice, you're in the strongest position to negotiate.
Approach the conversation with gratitude and professionalism, emphasizing your
enthusiasm for the role while making your case for fair compensation.
4. Practice Makes Professional
Negotiating can feel intimidating, especially if it's your
first job offer. Practice your talking points with a friend, mentor, or practice
with the Big Interview
training platform or through a Salary Negotiation
appointment with a career advisor to build confidence. The goal is to sound
informed, not demanding.
For example: "Based on my research and the market value for
this position, I was expecting a salary closer to [X range]. Is there
flexibility to adjust the offer?"

The more informed you are, the more confident you'll feel

Please Sign this Petition to Save Humanities Departments at Montclair State !
Protect Humanities Departments from Short-Sighted Cuts
Dear Members of the Ancient Studies Community and the UMBC Community,
Montclair State University is planning to eliminate all of its Humanities Departments. This short-sighted action makes it more difficult for students who attend Montclair State to attain a broad and deep understanding of themselves and the world around them through the study of the Humanities. It defunds and otherwise hampers faculty members who teach subjects in the Humanities.
The move undervalues and marginalizes Humanities education as an intrinsic good which enables students to reason logically from evidence, think critically, and speak and write clearly and effectively. Humanities education trains students to distinguish truth from lie, reality from fiction, right from wrong, just from unjust, public from private good, democracy from autocracy, and constitutionality from lawlessness and violent chaos. The study of the Humanities cultivates humane emotions in ways other disciplines do not. It should not surprise anyone that the basic capacities of educated people are in such short supply today.

Learn how QM Standards Ensure Quality in Online Course Design in the Applying the QM Rubric (APPQMR) Workshop
Online workshop offered Jan. 6-27 by UMBC and Salisbury
Individuals interested in learning about the underlying principles behind the QM Rubric may be enrolled into QM’s flagship workshop, Applying the QM Rubric (APPQMR), that will be offered January 6-27, 2026 in an asynchronous online format.
In this three-week workshop, participants will learn the critical elements of the QM quality assurance process and how to draft helpful recommendations as they apply the Rubric to an actual course.
Target Audience
QM's workshop on the QM Rubric (Higher Education, 7th edition) and its use in the design of online and hybrid courses is intended for a broad audience, including full time and adjunct faculty, instructional designers, administrators, or students enrolled in approved UMBC programs.
It is particularly helpful to those new to QM or are considering the adoption of a quality assurance process for online and hybrid learning. The workshop offers hands-on experiences as participants apply what they have learned to review components of a course and draft helpful recommendations based on QM Standards.
The workshop is recommended for:
Learning Objectives
After completing this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Identify the origin and scope of Quality Matters.
- Identify the critical elements of the QM quality assurance program, including the QM Rubric (HE, 7th edition), materials, processes, and administrative components.
- Apply the QM Higher Education Rubric, 7th ed., to review online courses.
- Make decisions on whether the demo course meets selected QM Rubric Specific Review Standards.
- Apply the concept of alignment.
- Draft helpful recommendations for course improvement by citing Annotations from the QM Rubric and evidence from the course.
The APPQMR is the prerequisite for QM's Higher Ed Peer Reviewer Course, which is required to become a QM-Certified Peer Reviewer. Since 2019, more than 50 UMBC faculty, staff, and students have completed the APPQMR workshop. Several UMBC faculty have gone on to become QM-Certified Peer Reviewers or Master Reviewers.
Workshop Details and Schedule
- Format & Schedule: Workshop format is asynchronous online via Canvas. *NOTE: This workshop is not self-paced. It has firm due dates for all required assignments and revisions. Potential participants should review QM's Schedule & Checklist in advance of being enrolled. The schedule outlines expectations and required deadlines. Certified facilitators review, offer feedback, and grade activities.
- Time commitment: A minimum of 7-9 hours per week is recommended for achieving the learning objectives. The schedule includes daily time estimates to help participants manage their time and stay on track.
- Course Length: Three weeks, excluding holidays (January 6-27, 2026)
