October was Disability Identity and Awareness Month, and SDS was bustling with exciting events! One of the highlights was welcoming our special guest, Chip, who joined us for one of our monthly Accessibility Walk & Roll Tours.

We're thrilled to share this video showcasing Chip as she explores and demonstrates some of the accessible routes around campus. If you missed this one, don't worry! There are more opportunities to join us. Our next tours will take place on November 19 at 12 PM.

What are the features? We have many, including a Skywalk and several upgrades (lecture halls and elevators) and more on the way.
What are the bugs?  Learn more about how work with situations, whether it's contacting Work Control for a repair (410-455-2550), reporting an accessibility concern, or working with campus partners, such as Facilities Management  and DoIT to support inclusion.  Accessibility is everyone's responsibility.

We will gather in the ADS Conference Room - learn the skywalk and tunnel connections within the Academic Core, review Adaptive Computing within the Library, and visit the reception area of Retriever Integrated Health - which supports both physical and mental health.  The tour is limited to a small group, and please know that mask use is VERY WELCOME.

Students who are majoring in Management of Aging Studies are required to complete AGNG 460: The Management of Aging Services Internship but did you know that this is also available for aging minors?  

An internship allows you the opportunity to get firsthand experience in the field, network, and meet other like-minded individuals.  It also looks great on a resume!  We also have the ability to discuss site placements that intersect with your major.

I know many of you may be working an outside job while also taking a full course load.  The internship requires students to work in a field placement for a total of 102.5 hours over the course of the semester.  This equates to about 8-9 hours per week.  Students will work with their site supervisors on determining a schedule.  For example, you may request to attend your site one 8 hour day each week or 4 hours twice a week.  

Prerequisite: Nine credits in AGNG courses with a grade of 'C' or better. Completion of 60 credits.

AGNG 460 - Management of Aging Services Internship is a 3 credit course.  Departmental Consent is required to enroll.  Students who are interested should talk to the AGNG advisor or schedule an appointment with Professor Lauren Price  laprice@umbc.edu.  

AGNG 460 Course Description: 
This course is part of the internship requirement in the Management of Aging Services major. Students are placed at established agencies that provide services to older adults. Students will either undertake a new project directly related to the management of aging services or participate in an ongoing project designed to improve and/or evaluate services for older adults. Students work under the direction of an immediate supervisor at the agency and are overseen by the Internship Director at the Erickson School. Student internship placements will reflect the student’s career interests and career plans in government/policy, human services/aging network, or business/for-profit services. Students attend a one-hour internship seminar twice monthly during the semester.

This course introduces students to the field, core concepts, and methods that comprise critical disability studies, providing an interdisciplinary overview of the events, people, concepts, and issues at the center of the disability rights movement and its related academic communities. Following the slogan "Nothing About Us Without Us," course materials (whether academic or popular) have been written by people with disabilities who connect their creative work to education, politics, and everyday life. Students learn about disability justice frameworks that show how able-bodied supremacy has been formed in relation to other systems of domination and exploitation.
