2026 WashU RADIANCE Summer Research Program
Supported by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute
Program Period: June 8 - July 31, 2026
Application Deadline: January 20, 2026 at 11:59pm CT
The RADIANCE track provides the following to each participating student:
- Housing, transportation costs to/from St. Louis, and a Metrolink transit pass;
- $4,000 stipend for undergraduate students or $4,392 stipend for graduate or health professional students;
- Financial support for approved professional development activities related to their summer research project (e.g., conference/workshop attendance, publication fees, etc.);
- A 1-week Bootcamp at the beginning of the training program to develop general research and professional skills and scientific knowledge related to cardiology, hematology, pulmonology, and sleep disorders;
- Weekly lecture series on topics related to cardiology, hematology, pulmonology, sleep disorders, and other topics in general medical sciences and public health;
- Real-world research experience at a top-ranked research institution;
- One-on-one mentorship in a small research project;
- Opportunities to advance writing and oral presentation skills; and
- Social and networking opportunities throughout the summer.
What to expect from the RADIANCE track:
- RADIANCE will focus on enhancing participants’ skills so that they understand the challenges and opportunities needed to become successful researchers in heart, lung, blood, and sleep disorders.
- Participants are expected to pursue their research training full time (defined as 40 hours per week), attend all program events, and complete all required evaluations and deliverables.
- At the end of the eight-week program, participants will give symposium presentations.
- Participants will engage in group discussions, seminars and lectures on research ethics, scientific writing, clinical trials, and more.
Eligibility criteria for RADIANCE:
- Individuals must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
- Individuals must be a full-time undergraduate, graduate, or health professional student actively enrolled in an accredited university or health professional school.
- Individuals must have successfully completed at least one undergraduate year at an accredited university (including baccalaureate schools of nursing) or have successfully completed at least one quarter or semester at an accredited health professional school.

Special Event: Fix Your Content Day
On Nov 18, UMBC will host
Fix Your Content Day. This one-day push is a chance for faculty, staff, and instructional designers to review Ally accessibility reports, make fixes, and strengthen our commitment to inclusive teaching. Check your Ally report, make at least 3 targeted fixes, and submit the results to earn a microcredential. Need help? Drop in to ENGR 102 between 1-3 pm.

For the past 10 years, Retriever Essentials has been dedicated to nourishing our ever growing UMBC community by fighting food insecurity, and providing essential resources to students, staff, and faculty. If you'd like to contribute to this important work please consider participating in our 10 for 10 campaign! As we celebrate a decade of service, we are encouraging folks to donate a recurring $10 per month (or as much as you're able) in honor of our 10 years.
Currently, we're experiencing high demand and seeking ways to keep the shelves of The Essential Space, our campus free grocery store, stocked. In light of the national focus on food insecurity, we've received numerous inquiries asking how to help support our work. This is a testimony to the incredibly caring and supportive community at UMBC, which we are so thankful for.
How to make financial contributions: Any amount is helpful and appreciated! You may make a secure credit card donation through
the university's giving site. Be sure to type "Retriever Essentials" under designation and consider opting into a recurring gift. For staff and faculty interested in pre-tax payroll deduction you can sign up for recurring gifts through
USM's giving site. After logging in with your UMBC credentials you can select Retriever Essentials as the fund to donate to.
If you prefer to donate items directly, here's a list of the primary needs:
- Quick grab and go items like protein bars/shakes and fresh fruit (apples and bananas)
- Prepackaged Rice Bags
- Cereal/oatmeal
- Ready-to-eat meals that can be microwaved
- Canned or packet meats (tuna, chicken) ideally with pop-top lids
- Coats, gloves, and blankets (we're stocked on hats and scarves)
- Can openers
- Diapers and wipes
- Basic toiletries (toothpaste, brushes, etc..)
- Menstrual products
We also have an
Amazon Wishlist to make this process more convenient for you. All donations can be sent to or dropped off in The Essential Space during operating hours. The Commons room 1A10. Monday-Wednesday, and Friday 11am-5:30pm.
Furthermore, please share that UMBC is now using an app to instantaneously share about leftover food after campus events. Please download "Share Meals" and login using your UMBC credentials. You snap a pic, add in the time, location, and servings, and hungry students will come.
The Essential Space is available to all UMBC students, faculty, staff, and contractors in need. Thank you so much for your support.

[Repost] Thrive On: Is What’s On Your Plate Nourishing You?
Join for dinner and good conversation
On Thursday, November 20, the Center for Democracy and Civic Life will host Thrive On, an engaging, facilitated conversation that will connect you with other members of the UMBC community.
Our conversations will be focused on two interrelated questions:
"How do you live your values in community?"
"How do you live a life that sustains you?"
We will explore challenges with thriving, share resources to support thriving, and generate ideas about how we, as a UMBC community, can improve thriving on campus.
This program, as a part of UMBC Thrive Fest 2025, will take place on November 20, 2025 from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. in the University Center, UC 312. A catered dinner will be provided.
This program is a collaboration between the Center for Democracy and Civic Life's Dinner with Friends program and Student Belonging.
