Honoring Native American Heritage Month

November is National Native American Heritage Month, a crucial time for our community to move beyond reflection and actively center the enduring contributions, brilliance, and sovereignty of Indigenous peoples who have cared for these lands for generations.

UMBC is situated on the ancestral lands of the Piscataway and Susquehannock peoples. While we acknowledge the historical significance of this land, we must also recognize that citizens of countless Indigenous nations continue to live, work, and lead in this region and across the nation. This month, we invite our community to honor not just the past, but the vital and ongoing presence, diverse perspectives, and unwavering voices of all Native and Indigenous peoples.

Native and Indigenous communities are not a single entity; they encompass a rich diversity of over 574 federally recognized (including many more unrecognized) nations, hundreds of languages, and millennia of unique cultures.

The contributions of Native and Indigenous peoples are foundational to this nation, yet they are routinely unrecognized, underappreciated, and erased. This erasure from history books, media, and public consciousness is not accidental; it is a profound injustice that continues to limit the visibility and influence of Native individuals and communities today.

We must actively work to restore the visibility and respect that Native and Indigenous peoples deserve by acknowledging their profound impact in areas such as environmental stewardship. How Native communities have historically engaged in sustainable agriculture, conservation practices, and embodied ecological knowledge that informs modern environmentalism.

It is essential to understand that Native nations and peoples are still fighting to be fully seen and to have their rights respected. Their struggles for tribal sovereignty, land rights, healthcare, and resource protection often remain on the political margins.

The historical call to honor Native peoples dates back over a century, beginning with efforts like the American Indian Association's plan for an American Indian Day in the early 1900s. Since 1990, when President George H. W. Bush signed the first resolution, the observance has evolved, but the need for active recognition remains urgent.

This Native American Heritage Month, let us commit to celebrating and elevating the resilience, leadership, and untold stories of Native peoples, ensuring their crucial contributions and needs are not unseen.

Join the Indigenous Peoples Union on Saturday, November 15th, from 2 PM to 6 PM for BAIC's 49th Annual Powwow at the Timonium Fairgrounds. As part of IPU's initiative for bridging on and off-campus relationships, they're offering transportation to the annual powwow hosted by the Baltimore American Indian Center! This will be the 49th year that the center has hosted its annual powwow, marking 49 years of sacred intertribal celebrations of life, heritage, and community! They're excited to honor these traditions with sharing food, dances, and just spending time with one another. To learn more about the event and IPU, check out the original myUMBC post here.
Intern of the Week: Hyma Roshini Gompa

  <Tagline>Check Out Hyma Roshini 's Internship!</Tagline>

Name: Hyma Roshini Gompa

Pronouns: She/Her

Semester of Internship: Spring 2025

Major: MPS in Data Science

Current Class Level: Master's Student

This semester I completed a(n)...: Internship

Internship, Co-op, or Research Site (Company/Organization
    Name): Trulogik

Location of the Organization (City, State): Bwtech

Title of position: Intern

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research
    opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities:

I have had the opportunity to work on impactful projects
that sit at the intersection of healthcare and technology. My day-to-day
responsibilities involve conducting both technical and business analysis on EDI
claims and risk segmentation models to support more accurate healthcare cost
forecasting. I regularly build and maintain automated ETL pipelines using
Python and SQL to streamline data preparation, enabling efficient integration
with Databricks workflows. I also design interactive dashboards using Power BI
to help cross-functional teams make informed decisions based on real-time data
insights. One of the most exciting aspects of my role has been deploying
scalable, machine learning–driven insights dashboards on AWS EC2, integrating
Spring Boot APIs with Python-based ML modules to enhance system
interoperability and analytics capabilities. Additionally, I participate in
Agile sprints, manage JIRA tasks, contribute to Confluence documentation, and
present findings to both technical and business stakeholders. Recently, I've
also been exploring the use of large language models (LLMs) and generative AI
for automating member summary reports as part of a proof of concept, opening
doors for future AI-driven solutions in healthcare reporting

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did
you hear of the position and submit your application?

I learned about the Intern position at Trulogik during a
career fair hosted by UMBC, where I had the chance to interact directly with
company representatives and learn more about their work in healthcare
technology. After the event, I followed up by tailoring my resume and
submitting my application. The UMBC Career Center played a key role in helping
me prepare for this opportunity—they provided valuable feedback during a resume
review session, which helped me present my technical skills and project experience
more effectively. I submitted my application shortly after the career fair in
early August 2024, and was later contacted for interviews that led to this
    exciting internship opportunity.

What resources did you use to find your current
    experience?

UMBC Career Center, Career Fairs, Handshake

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and
    organization?

What I've enjoyed the most about my position at Trulogik is
the opportunity to work on meaningful, real-world problems in the healthcare
domain while applying and expanding my technical skills. The organization
fosters a collaborative and innovative environment where new ideas are
welcomed, and interns are treated as valuable contributors. I've especially
appreciated the hands-on experience with modern tools like Databricks, AWS, and
Power BI, as well as the chance to explore cutting-edge technologies like LLMs
and generative AI. Being part of a team that genuinely values learning and
impact has made this experience both professionally rewarding and personally
    fulfilling.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your
    work?

I believe I've made a meaningful impact at Trulogik by
helping streamline data processes and enhance decision-making through
automation and analytics. By developing efficient ETL pipelines and integrating
machine learning models into production environments, I've significantly
reduced manual data preparation time and improved the accuracy of healthcare
cost forecasting. The dashboards I created using Power BI have enabled teams
across departments to access insights more easily, contributing to faster and
more informed decisions. Additionally, my work on integrating Spring Boot APIs
with Python ML modules and exploring generative AI for reporting has opened up
new possibilities for scalability and innovation within the organization.

What advice would you give to another student who is
seeking an internship or similar experience?

My advice to another student seeking an internship or
similar experience is to start early and be proactive—attend career fairs, info
sessions, and networking events, even if you're not actively job hunting yet.
These events not only expose you to opportunities but also help you practice
communicating your skills. Make full use of the UMBC Career Center for resume
reviews and mock interviews—they can significantly improve how you present
yourself. Don't be discouraged if you don't meet every single requirement in a
job posting; instead, focus on showcasing your willingness to learn,
adaptability, and problem-solving skills. Finally, work on personal or class
projects and include them in your resume and LinkedIn—they show initiative and
    real-world application of your skills.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you
liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the
    Career Center.

What I liked most about my position at Trulogik was the
chance to contribute to impactful healthcare projects while learning
cutting-edge tools and technologies. The UMBC Career Center played a crucial
role by helping me refine my resume and prepare for career fairs, which
ultimately led me to this opportunity.

Concur Launch!

<Tagline>Let's get going, with SAP Concur!</Tagline>

Let's get going, with SAP Concur!

Today is our official launch of the new travel system, SAP Concur. Over the past three weeks, over 800 campus community members have attended training sessions for the new system. Thank you so much to all of you who have made the effort to get up to speed. The training presentation slides and videos are now available on our new travel website. There are still training sessions scheduled this week as well – so please feel free to join us for training!

You can start your journey with us at travel.umbc.edu, the myUMBC Travel Group, and easily login to SAP Concur at umbc.edu/go/concur.

Along with the changes needed to both support this new system and simplify the travel process, an Interim Travel Policy is effective on November 3 for travel booked via SAP Concur. This interim policy streamlines and clarifies the current published travel policy. Take a moment and celebrate with me that the new policy—at nine pages—is a bit more digestible than the prior one at 26 pages.

THE LEGACY TRAVEL SYSTEM IS STILL AVAILABLE

Please remember that the legacy Travel System is still up and running. If you have existing pre-approvals, you are welcome (even encouraged) to proceed with the reimbursement in the legacy system. Even if you need to book a trip and haven't had a chance to get training on the new system, you can still create a pre-approval in the Legacy Travel System. Pre-approvals will be sunset in early December, reimbursements will still be processed into early 2026. We will announce the full phase-out plan for the Travel System coming soon.

Help Desk Support

If you have any questions or concerns as you get up and running, we are providing help desk support both live and virtual to help.

Tuesday, November 4 from 9:00 - 11:00 AM (LIVE in the UC Lobby in Front of the Center for Global Engagement, Room 207 + (Virtual on Webex)

Tuesday, November 4 from 12:00 - 2:00 PM ( LIVE in the UC Lobby in Front of the Center for Global Engagement, Room 207 + (Virtual on Webex))

Wednesday, November 5 from 9:30 - 11:00 AM (Virtual on Webex)

Wednesday, November 5 from 2:30 - 4:30 PM (Virtual on Webex)

Thursday, November 6 from 1:00 - 2:30 PM (Virtual on Webex)

Friday, November 7 from 1:15 - 2:30 PM (Virtual on Webex)

Training is ongoing
We continue to offer training, check here for upcoming training dates.

HackUMBC 2025: "StudyCompass" Takes Top Prize in DoIT’s Data Science Challenge

  <Tagline>24 hours, 1,000+ students, one Nintendo Switch 2 prize</Tagline>

Over a thousand students gathered at the UMBC campus and
virtually for the 11th annual hackUMBC.
It was a fun, snack-fueled 24-hour competition where teams built innovative
apps and tools to solve problems important to them.

The Division of Information Technology (DoIT)
sponsored a special challenge track called the Data Science Track: Best
Student Insight Hack. Most innovative solution using a knowledge graph of
simulated academic student data. The track boasted a much-desired prize: a
brand-new Nintendo Switch 2 bundled with Mario Kart World!

Out of 18 projects, the big winner of the DoIT Data Science
track was Ruben Finkel for his project called "StudyCompass."
Ruben is a senior at Pikesville High School and is currently applying to
computer science BS programs. This was his first hackathon experience, and he
was excited to see the whole room full of coders in Engineering Lecture Hall 1.
He described the 24-hour hackathon as grueling, intense, and energized by many
Red Bulls. Throughout the first hour, he kept coming back to the idea that he
wanted to design something that would help students like himself. Then he began
building his project off this idea, which developed into his creation of an AI
    Guidance Counselor.

Left to right: Isabella Golster, Logan Montgomery, Ruben Finkel, Jason Paluck, and Todd Haddaway.

StudyCompass: Like Having a Personally Trained Guidance
    Counselor on Your Laptop

What exactly is StudyCompass? Think of it as a digital
guidance counselor. It's a web tool that helps you plan your classes and
fix your study habits so you can do your absolute best in school.

Ruben was inspired because he felt like many students in
large schools don't get enough one-on-one time with their guidance counselors.
He wanted to build the perfect tool he wished he had.

What StudyCompass does:

Checks
Your Studying: It looks at how you study and gives you advice on how
to study smarter, not just harder.

Tracks
Your Grades: It helps you keep an eye on how you're doing in your
         courses.

Plans
Your Future: It can make a personalized road map of the classes you
should take, even telling you which classes are harder or more important
         for your major.

Study Compass Short
    Demo Video

Ruben used simulated university data provided by DoIT to
make StudyCompass smart enough to help students with their real-world problems.

Shoutout to the DoIT Team

The hackUMBC event wouldn't have been possible without the
people in DoIT who set up the challenge!

A group of people, including Jason Paluck, Todd Haddaway,
Logan Montgomery, and Erica D'Eramo, worked hard to create the Data Science
track. Jason came up with the highly detailed challenge, giving everyone data
and great ideas. Todd was the superhero who stayed up until 2 a.m. on a
Sunday morning to answer questions and help the students as they worked! Logan,
who had been to hackUMBC before, gave the team tips on what the student hackers
would need. Stacy Cahill, the Chief Information Security Officer, stopped by to
    cheer on the students!

Great job, hackUMBC organizers!

The DoIT team is thankful for the impressive coordination
and leadership of all of the hackUMBC leaders and volunteers. A special
shout-out to Isabella Goltser, the president of hackUMBC and a computer
science major, and Jay Gepilano, the Design Team Lead and a computer
science major and double minor in bioinformatics and Gender & Women's
Studies. Their assistance in making our track happen during the hackathon is
    greatly appreciated!
