The Idea and Innovation Challenge is a chance to solve a problem with YOUR Ideas and win up to $1,100! If you consider yourself a creative problem solver, have strong feelings about problems in your community, or are looking for opportunities to apply your mindset and skill then this competition is for you! 

This year, the competition will feature 3 tracks: The Technology & Innovation Track, the Social Impact Track, and the Spark Track. The Spark Trackwill be an opportunity for students who don’t have their own idea to work on a solution to a problem that will be announced in advance.

1. Tackle Emails with Large Attachments 

Attachments in emails are often the biggest culprits for using up your cloud storage. You can quickly find all emails with attachments by using Gmail's search function. Just type has:attachment into the search bar. Review the results and delete any emails you no longer need.

  • Pro-tip: If an attachment is important, download and save it to your computer or a more permanent cloud service before deleting the email.

2. Unsubscribe from Unwanted Mailing Lists 

Subscription emails from mailing lists can flood your inbox and contribute significantly to clutter and storage usage. If you're no longer interested in a newsletter or promotional emails, look for the "Unsubscribe" link at the bottom of the email. Unsubscribing stops the emails entirely, saving you the hassle of deleting them one by one.

3. Delete Old and Unnecessary Emails 

While large attachments are the main culprits, a large volume of old emails also adds up. Take some time to search for and delete emails you no longer need. You can use search terms like before:YYYY/MM/DD to find emails from a specific date range (e.g., before:2024/01/01 to find emails from last year).

4. Clear Out Your Spam Folder 

While Gmail automatically empties your spam folder every 30 days, it's a good habit to clear it out more frequently, especially if you receive a lot of spam. This is a quick and easy way to reclaim a small amount of storage space.

5. Empty the Trash Bin 

This is a critical final step! Remember that moving emails to the trash doesn't delete them permanently—they still take up storage space. Make sure you empty your trash folder regularly after deleting emails to fully recover your storage.

The Department of Procurement and Strategic Sourcing was proud to host UMBC’s first Vendor Expo, and it was a wonderful success!

This event showcased our current contracted vendors, State of Maryland preferred vendors, as well as a diverse range of Minority- and Small-Business partners. It was a fantastic opportunity to connect vendors with the UMBC community and highlight the wide variety of products and services available to support our campus.

We were excited to welcome approximately 100 UMBC faculty and staff who joined us for the day. Below are a few photos capturing the energy of the event.

UMBC professor Houbing Song and PhD student Safayat Bin Hakim will give a free online webinar on Neuro-symbolic AI: The Third Wave of AI, at 8:00am EDT on Thursday, 26 September 2025. The webinar is part of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IES) Young Professionals Society "Inspire the Next Generation with IEEE IES SYP Forum and Webinar Series".

There are three waves of Artificial Intelligence. The first Wave of AI is Crafted Knowledge, which includes rule-based AI systems. The second wave of AI is Statistical Learning, which includes machines becoming intelligent by using statistical methods. The third wave of AI is contextual adaptation. In the third wave, instead of learning from data, intelligent machines will understand and perceive the world on its own, and learn by understanding the world and reason with it. Neuro-symbolic AI, which combines neural networks with symbolic representations, has emerged as a promising solution of the third wave of AI. In this talk, first Houbing Herbert Song will share his journey from counter-unmanned aircraft systems to explainable AI to neuro-symbolic AI. Then he will present the past, present, and future of neuro-symbolic AI. Prof. Song will also share his perspective on the emerging area of neuro-symbolic AI.
