Incoming Student AP Information

<Tagline>Please read if you are expecting 2025 AP Scores</Tagline>

2025 AP Scores will start being released by College Board this week – the week of July 7th. Even if you requested scores be sent to UMBC it still may take up to a few weeks for those scores to be received, processed, and evaluated. For additional information on how to transfer coursework and AP scores, you can view this helpful guide – including UMBC’s College Board Code.

Until the course equivalency is fully listed in your course history you will not be able to use it as a prerequisite to make schedule changes on your own. You can check to see if the course has been fully evaluated by going to myUMBC>>Profile>>Grades>>Course History.

While advisors may be able to make updates to our FALL 2025 course suggestions based on your incoming AP information, it is the student's responsibility to make schedule adjustments and to reach out to campus representatives if they have questions or concerns. We strongly encourage students to remain vigilant with their incoming AP scores and to make adjustments to their upcoming schedule ASAP. To do so, you can follow the steps outlined below:

First, you should consult our AP Transfer Policies to verify whether or not you will be receiving credit for your pending scores.

Next, you can reach out to CNMSAdvising@umbc.edu if you have any questions or concerns about how your scores may affect your STEM course suggestions for the fall (i.e. MATH/BIOL/CHEM/PHYS courses, etc.). Questions regarding any other APs should be directed to the departments that oversee that major. A complete list of advising contacts across all departments on campus can be found HERE.

Finally, you will need to use the Schedule Planner or Course Search to put together a new schedule. A helpful video guide for how to ADD/DROP/SWAP classes can be found HERE. If there are major scheduling concerns or difficulties, you can reach out to CNMSAdvising@umbc.edu for a follow-up advising appointment.

**IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are attempting to adjust your schedule prior to when your AP credits have been fully articulated, you will need to reach out to the respective department (i.e. BIOL, CMSC, ENGL, PSYC, etc.) or professor on record for override permission. To do this, you will need to have already selected your preferred section number of the course you are attempting to register for. All communication must come from your UMBC email account and will need to include your full name, Campus ID (AB0000), specific section information (i.e. LEC/DIS/SEM/LAB), and a screenshot of the related AP score.

Please make sure to confirm that your scores were sent and received by UMBC prior to the start of the Fall semester. Overrides will not be given for Spring courses.

If you have any questions please email CNMSAdvising@umbc.edu.

UMBC’s Koirala Lab celebrates students’ award-winning RNA research and peer mentorship

A talented trio of students has earned accolades for their innovative work with Deepak Koirala, assistant professor of chemistry and biochemistry. Their awards are replicating like the RNA they study, as they unravel the complexities of viral RNA and reveal potential therapeutic targets.

Manju Ojha, Ph.D. candidate in biochemistry, Megan Nguyen, rising senior biochemistry and molecular biology major, and Jason Daniels ’25, biochemistry and psychology, all members of Koirala’s lab, recently received awards for their joint research on RNA.

Ojha received the Robert F. Steiner Award in recognition of her significant research contributions and dedicated mentorship of undergraduate students. The award was established in 1999 by Robert Cotter and Catherine Fenselau, former chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at UMBC, in tribute to Steiner, a former UMBC faculty member and pioneer in biophysical chemistry.

“This award highlights the growing impact of our work on understanding RNA structure, RNA-protein interactions, and viral replication mechanisms—an area that remains central to advancing structural virology and therapeutic development,” Ojha says. “The recognition underscores the importance of tackling complex questions in RNA structure and function using integrative biochemical and structural approaches.”

Jason Daniels (right) discusses a research poster with his mentor, Deepak Koirala (center), and lab mate Megan Nguyen, outside the Koirala Lab.

Students at the center of the lab

Koirala’s group focuses on viruses whose genomes are made of RNA, which include those that cause diseases like polio, the common cold, and more. The group is developing novel techniques to determine the 3D structures of RNA, plus running experiments to figure out how RNA structures in the viruses interact with their host cell’s machinery. Students are deeply involved in all of it.

Nguyen has been studying the structure and function of plant RNAs under Ojha’s mentorship since 2023. Plant viruses are a major challenge for some crops. This spring, Nguyen received the Satterfield-Bell Scholarship, established in 2001, which recognizes an outstanding junior in chemistry who has conducted research.

“I have learned so many techniques and so much scientific theory from Manju and other lab members,” Nguyen says. “I’m thankful for this amazing experience and to be recognized for it. However, with the mentorship I’ve received over the past three years, I know this award is not only my own, but everyone’s in the Koirala lab.”

Daniels has leveraged his experience in the Koirala lab into a competitive summer research program, the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Research Institute Summer Scholars Program. His long-term goal is to pursue an M.D. Daniels received the Faculty Award for Excellence in Biochemistry, given to a graduating biochemistry major who displays excellence in the classroom and the laboratory.

“I can confidently say that the Koirala lab has been transformative in my academic career and future in science,” Daniels says. “This would not have been possible without mentorship from Manju and Dr. Koirala.”

Koirala’s lab group includes many undergraduate and graduate students who support and encourage each other.
Incoming Student AP Information

<Tagline>Please read if you are expecting 2025 AP Scores</Tagline>

2025 AP Scores will start being released by the College Board the week of July 7th. Even if you requested scores be sent to UMBC it still may take up to a few weeks for those scores to be received, processed, and evaluated.

Until the course equivalency is listed in your course history you won't be able to use it as a prerequisite to make schedule changes on your own. You can check to see if the course has been fully evaluated by going to myUMBC - Profile- Grades- Course History.

However, advisors may be able to help you make schedule adjustments soon after you have received your scores. It is the student's responsibility to make schedule adjustments based on AP scores.

First, you should consult our AP transfer Policies to confirm that you will be receiving credit for your score.

Next, you will need to use the schedule planner or course search to put together a new schedule. All overrides are issued on specific sections so you will need to know exactly which section(s) you want to register for each new course. COEIT advisors can help with this process. You can schedule an appointment here.

Once you have the section information you will need to reach out to the appropriate department to receive permission.

All communication must include your name, ID, specific section information, a screenshot of the required AP score, and if you are sending an email it must come from your UMBC email account.

For Computer Science and Engineering permissions: email coeitadvising@umbc.edu.

For Math permissions: submit a Help Ticket here.

For Chemistry and Physics permissions: email CNMSadvising@umbc.edu.

Please make sure to confirm that your scores were sent and received by UMBC prior to the start of the Fall semester. Overrides will not be given for Spring courses.

If you have any questions please email coeitadvising@umbc.edu.
