Dr. Tucker stated, “There were opportunities at the Goddard Space Flight Center that have enabled this work that couldn’t be found elsewhere. There were people who built satellites, who understood satellite data, and had the computer code to process it. All the work I’ve done has been part of a team, with other people contributing in different ways. Working at NASA is a team effort of science and discovery that’s fun and intellectually rewarding.”

Leading brain researchers and engineers converge on UMBC campus to advance innovative neurotechnologies

From June 5 – 8, UMBC hosted leading scientific researchers for a series of meetings on the science of the brain—often said to be the least understood organ in the human body. The proceedings began with a meeting of the industry advisory board for the Building Reliable Advances and Innovations in Neurotechnology (BRAIN) Center, of which UMBC is a site. Ramana Vinjamuri, associate professor of computer science and electrical engineering, directs UMBC’s participation in the center and played a key role in organizing the meeting, which brought industry, government, and academic researchers together to discuss the latest advancements in developing safe, effective and affordable personalized neurotechnologies to diagnose, restore or enhance brain and nervous system functions. Immediately following, the Movement, Music, and Brain Health National Science Foundation (NSF) AccelNet Meeting showcased how tools such as AI, mobile brain-body imaging and brain-computer interfaces could advance investigations into how music and dance promote cognitive function and well-being.

On the Friday evening of June 6, visually compelling performances in the UMBC Fine Arts Recital Hall merged science and art. Musicians and dancers wearing sensors to monitor their brain waves and vital signs such as heartbeat treated the audience to performances of flamenco dancing, mariachi music, interpretive dance, and classical piano. A UMBC team presented the imagined interactions of a human and a humanoid robot—exploring how the two could move together and expressing the emotions that might arise from the interaction. The team comprised faculty members Vinjamuri; Andrea Kleinsmith, information systems, and Ann Sofie Clemmensen, dance; computer science and human-centered computing students Parthan Olikkal, Oritsejolomisan Mebaghanje, Viraj Janeja, Sruthi Sundharram, and Golnaz Moharrer; and UMBC graduates Sarah McHale ’24, dance, and Juju Ayoub ’25, dance.

UMBC joined the BRAIN Center in 2024. As an Industry–University Cooperative Research Center (IUCRC), it brings academic researchers across multiple institutions together with industry partners to conduct research of interest to those partners. Vinjamuri’s lab has partnered with industry and other research centers on projects such as detecting deception in brain waves, developing new tools for managing and treating substance abuse, and reducing stress through interaction with robots and virtual tools.

This was the first time that the BRAIN Center meeting was held in conjunction with an AccelNet meeting, part of the NSF’s efforts to tackle grand research challenges through coordinated international efforts. This meeting focused on better understanding how music and movement are linked to brain health.

The twin meetings were an extra draw, and brought in close to 300 attendees, says Vinjamuri, including program directors from the NSF and FDA.

“We brought some of the world’s top researchers to UMBC, where we could showcase our labs and discuss opportunities to collaborate,” he says. “There was lots of shared interest and fruitful discussions.”

The conferences were an interdisciplinary affair, with experts in fields such as computer science, mechanical engineering, dance, music and the arts all mingling.

“These event would not be possible without the support and participation of UMBC leadership, the BRAIN Center, and fellow site directors,” said Vinjamuri. “So many people, from across UMBC and our collaborating institutions, in the U.S. and around the world, came together to make the events a success and I am deeply grateful to them all.”

“For a conference like this, I get to wear both of my hats, advocating for both research and creative achievement,” said Karl Steiner, UMBC’s vice president for research and creative achievement, in opening remarks. “We entered these partnerships to improve human life. It’s truly a privilege and a motivation to focus on that joint mission.”

NPA Announces 2025-2026 IMPACT Fellowship Program for Postdocs

  <Tagline>Deadline: Monday, June 30th</Tagline>

National Postdoctoral Association Announces 2025-2026 IMPACT Fellowship Program

The NPA has announced the opening of the application process for the NPA IMPACT Fellowship Program ("IMPACT") class of 2025-2026. All current postdocs are eligible to apply to become an IMPACT Fellow and applications are not limited to individuals at NPA member institutions.

Apply!

Launched in 2021, the NPA IMPACT Fellowship Program (“IMPACT”) increases access to opportunities for early-career researchers based at U.S. institutions and from marginalized communities to build skills, understand strengths and develop networks. IMPACT provides participants with access to personal and career resources with a cohort of peers so that they can strategically build upon their existing skills and advance in their careers in the direction they choose.

A central component of the Fellowship is funded Individual IMPACT Projects (IIPs) that allow Fellows to take skills learned during the Fellowship and apply them through a project in their home communities. Individuals completing the program may gain additional opportunities as IMPACT alums.

Each iteration of IMPACT provides a 16-month fellowship for six early-career researchers and includes components such as peer networking engagement; specialized interaction opportunities with NPA speakers; IIP development and execution; external mentoring resources; individual strengths assessments and individualized interpretation; attendance at the NPA Annual Conference in San Francisco in March 2026.

After completing the IMPACT Fellowship Program, Fellows are expected to feel empowered and capable to use the knowledge, tools and resources that they gained from the program to implement IIPs at their institutions to contribute to their professional communities with particular attention to advancing the success of individuals from marginalized populations. (Note that "communities" often refers to the postdoctoral communities at host institutions; however, other communities are also allowable in this context.)

Apply!

All data collected through the application process will be used to review applicants for the IMPACT Fellowship Program. Your data submitted will be evaluated based on a candidate rubric and shared with IMPACT Task Force members.

NOTE:

1. The NPA seeks a cohort that is diverse (e.g., gender, institutions, geography, race, etc.)

2. Applicants must serve in their postdoc positions through at least Dec 2026.

3. This is an honorary fellowship. There is no stipend provided. There are, however, many other benefits (e.g., NPA pays costs of all programming, travel to NPA Conference, IIP seed grant).

4. Industry, government, national laboratory, and postdocs at other non-academic institutions are eligible to apply.

5. The NPA seeks leaders who are also in need.

6. Applications completed entirely or primarily using AI without the ability of the review committee to understand more about you as an individual will not be successful. (If this raises accessibility issues, please contact us using the email below.)

7. Applicants must be based in the U.S.

Female Lodgers Wanted

We are seeking female students to rent furnished bedrooms in a private single-family home located in the Maiden Choice/Arbutus area, available August 23, 2025, or earlier (ready by July 1st and after). The rooms come with linens and are part of a shared home with two female UMBC/UMB students/professionals, the landlord couple and non-shedding older friendly labradoodle, which is the sole responsibility of the landlord. We are looking for a respectful and considerate individual who values diversity, and is either a UMBC/UMB Ph.D., Graduate, or Junior/Senior Undergraduate student. The ideal candidate is a non-smoker, non-drug user, pet-free, and maintains a tidy living space. Our home features a large open concept renovated 4 bedroom and 3.5 bathrooms on a quiet dead-end street. Our home is conveniently located less than 2 miles from the UMBC campus and close to two shopping centers with shuttle stops. The UMBC Shuttle and public transportation bus stop are within walking distance. The UMBC Transit runs buses almost every 15 minutes from the Paradise-Purple Line during the week from 7am-12am. The rooms available are two upstairs bedrooms that share a bathroom with large closets. Each room comes furnished with a full or queen bed, dresser, nightstands, desk, smart TV, and Wi-Fi. All bedrooms have their own key locks. You will have access to a spacious open concept kitchen, laundry room, large front covered porch, living and dining rooms. All utilities, including water, gas, electric, Wi-Fi, and streaming cable services, are included. We supply trash bags, dish detergents, and cleaning supplies. The landlord is responsible for maintaining the lawn and landscaping. The monthly rent is $1,000 FIRM per room for one person, with a $500 deposit. We prefer a 9-month or month-to-month lease but will consider longer leases and flexible move-in and out dates. Please note that this is a private home and not an Airbnb, hotel, campus apartment, or dorm. If interested, please call 410-999-4668, Monday-Friday, 6pm to 8pm, to discuss further and schedule a viewing.
